We have finally made it to the last Episode of re-painting the R34 Skyline. I've said it before and I'll say it again.. I am so happy I decided to re-do the entire thing because the paint job really makes the car and shows how much work has really gone into this Project. If we don't have any stupid complications, then we should see the R34 Skyline hit the road very soon!!
So ladies and gentlemen we are almost there and i'm happy to say that this is
going to be the last painting episode for the r34 skyline and from here on
episode 25 and onwards we're going to fix the engine
and we're going to get this car back on the road so
bear with us for a little bit more i know some people are complaining about
the painting episodes other people are loving it
but it's got to be done and let's get into it
you got me
no wizard of oz can undo what i'm completely out of luck this time i'm
stuck in reverse i gotta get away now but i can't seem to
so with the r34 skyline body fully painted and unmasked we pushed it
outside for it to chill in the sunlight while we moved on to the last batch of
parts we slowly started masking them up in preparation to finally paint them
so as you can see by the footage i'm really really laying this paint down
thick and believe it or not we ended up getting some stripes come through once
again but sam is going to show you how to
rectify the issue in a second
yeah so when i see stripes turn the pressure down because you've
already been this way i go this way now so for the drop call
just because it's an important panel you're just watching it fall off
using the drop coat or control coat method in the opposite direction with
lower air pressure means that we can have these metallics
sit nice and upright once again meaning we don't have any zebra stripes
once the paint is exposed to any form of light
all righty so the actual doors were sprayed off the car this time if you
remember the first time around i explained that
i was scared that there was going to be a difference in colors if the panels are
sprayed separately because on some panels you might go a little bit heavier
compared to others but sam did mention that this paint
system along with this specific color is very
forgiving and we can actually spray it each panel individually off the car
and not having any not having any troubles
in differences in color so with that in mind
we actually sprayed everything off the car as i mentioned
meaning we are left with a beautiful seamless finish between the door jamb and
the actual quarter panel this here is perfect there's no masking
lines and same goes with here there is it is
all
it is all beautiful and even so very happy about that that's all i'd
say all righty so now i'm going to spend a
couple of minutes talking about the r34 gtr rear spoiler
how you can build one on a bit of a budget instead of paying drug money for
a real one if you're just here for the painting
side of things skip to a minute whatever it says on the screen
so let's get into it the last 12 months i've been keeping an eye out
to find as many second-hand parts that are original or brand new parts that
come up for a good price and it's getting very very hard to find
any form of japanese car parts that are affordable
especially anything that has the letters gtr
on it this includes the wing so in the last 12 months
i think three or four spoilers have come up for sale
and they've been two and a half thousand australian dollars or more
which is an absolutely ridiculous amount in my opinion
considering i paid eighteen hundred dollars for an entire
r34 gtt rolling shell and i paid even less
for a entire supra yes they weren't in the best condition to start off with but
we're talking buying an entire car that can possibly
drive one day compared to just an accessory that is
going to sit on the back of the boot okay so with that in mind obviously i
didn't really want to spend that sort of money
so i already had a spoiler that came with the car
now i'm pretty sure it's just an ebay one i don't think it's any flashy brand
i'd tell you the brand if i knew what it was but i don't know what the brand is
so i paid 150 for the rear spoiler when it came with the
with the rolling shell and i was looking at it and i wasn't really happy with the
wing for a few reasons reason number one is
the end caps the end caps aren't like the original
ones an original spoiler has some very nice i think countersunk allen keys it's
a nice plastic piece and it just looks factory like it should
while the replica ones are a very thin layer of fiberglass with pretty much
like a wooden tech screw through it it looks disgusting so we had to
rectify that issue the next problem is right under here see
that part there on an original one that is actually a
part where the wing rises bolt to they have one two three four
six five six seven eight so they've got an extra eight mounting positions
for it to be nice and steady instead of just one
and two m6 bolts so they are your main differences then we've got the
wing riser originally obviously you get a fiberglass one
what i did as you can see this one is carbon fiber we'll get to in a minute
so the first thing i had to do is i wanted to fix the
waviness of the wing so the wing from factory or
the china ones they are quite ripply so are the original ones
so i did get some body filler i took a whole skim across the thing
a big a big speed file or sanding block to try keep it nice and
even and i sanded it relatively flat for it
to look nice so after that what i did is i found
myself the wing spoiler or the wing blade i
wanted now this is actually an original r34
gtr wing blade which are aluminium and somebody has wrapped it in carbon
fiber when i say carbon fiber i don't mean the cheap carbon fiber vinyl
wrap that you want to put in your bonnet because you're an absolute mad dog
i'm talking about real carbon fiber and you can see the joint
goes along the bottom the thing is you can't see it that's how good they've
done it which is awesome so once it's on the car
you will never see the join line that runs
across the entire thing and obviously they've put some form of resin over it
to seal it in so once i found the wing blade
i liked i paid $500 for the wing blade and
an original mines bootlip split the cost in two
to two and we've got a $250 wing blade and a $250
mines bootlip so right now we are at $400
with the second hand china spoiler and a second hand frankenstein
wing blade as i mentioned it is aluminium with
real carbon fiber wrapped so what i did next is i got some
loctite and i loctited this wing blade in position i got the angle i wanted of
the wing blade and i use loctite on all the mounting
bolts to make sure that this never moves or hopefully never moves
because we're never going to be able to take this off
because of our next step as i mentioned the end caps of the china wing blade i
was not happy with so what i did is i grabbed some epoxy
and i epoxy the caps on both sides in place 24 hours went by
i sanded it smooth and obviously we had to put a little bit of a skimmer filler
here and flatten it out after that we put
high fill primer over the entire spoiler sanded it and it was ready for paint
and as you can see the spoiler actually appeared twice in the spray booth
in the first episode of the painting we painted
this blue and we clear coated it and then what we did in the second day
is we scuffed the the fresh clear coat and we clear coated the entire wing
with the wing blade now why we did that in two sections
is once this was in blue base coat we didn't really want to play around with
wrapping taking the masking tape off this
because we could have potentially damaged the fresh base the blue base
coat so we just figured we'd do it in two days
and get it done so as i said four hundred dollar
replica wing that you literally could not tell a difference
except the end caps and if you look very closely
of how it is mounted underneath so that was
very very lengthy but for the guys that are building these cars on a bit of a
budget probably gave them a bit of an idea i've
already been through this on instagram a couple of months ago but
all the youtube videos do come out a lot later
that is it people and the bigger panels once they were freshly baked sam and
jayden very very carefully put them back onto
the car making sure there is no contact between panels when doors open when
bonnets open and close what they said is we're better off
putting the majority of the panels back onto the body of the car securely
instead of having them float around in the back of the tray of
the ute or in the actual skyline because we do risk damaging them so
that's what they did with everything slowly packed up it was
time to push the car into the trailer and the weekend was an absolutely
massive success we smashed out a lot of work
in about a day and a half's worth of work and i couldn't thank sam and jayden
from donnie book accidents a bit repair center enough if you need any
sort of paint work done there's a link in the
description below as i said before they won't rent out the
but they are more than happy to take on any restoration work
the attention to detail is pretty next level there were a few sections of the
car that i wasn't happy with and i was just prepared to bomb paint over the top
but once the boys had a further look at it they were like well we've come this
far let's do it properly and i'll do a bit
of a walk around the car obviously we are still missing some
proper wheels and the spoiler and badges and
line up the panel gaps just a tiny little bit more but for the majority it
is all there it's nice and blue the color is even
i am absolutely stoked so with the painting out of the way i
think it is time to get some drone footage of sam's
beautiful property finish up the video and get back into
the engine stuff engine side of things on this car so we
can get it back on the road as soon as possible
