This has been my first year of sowing annuals from seed for my garden and I thought you might like to have a look at my favourite top 6.
There have been others I have really enjoyed, but these have outperformed all the others and have been in bloom from the end of May and are still going strong.
They are: Pelargoniums Ageratum Statice Zinnias Lobelia Impatiens
I haven’t grown them all myself, but I do know I’m definitely having them all again next year!

Hi there everyone, it's Jeanette here from Enthusiastic Gardener.
Hello Lottie and I would like to share with you
my favorite annuals that I've grown in the garden this year,
which I will definitely grow again next year because I love them so much. There
have been a lot of annuals that I grew from seed for the first time
ever and they have done very very well. Some didn't do very well,
these are the ones that have done very well. I haven't grown them all, I can't
claim to fame on that. I just wanted to share with you the
ones that I've really enjoyed, the ones that have lasted such a long time
and the ones that I would definitely do again. Yes,
Lottie wants her dinner, you've got to wait a moment.
I just want to show you these because I found these
at a little antique store and they're made of glass
and they were only one pound each. Isn't that amazing? Let me show you
closely. Really really pretty, made of glass
so I'll be able to keep those out all year
and I've stuck them in here for the moment. I now can't get them back in.
They will probably get moved around. Oops, well we can have different heights, that's
fine. But I just wanted to show you because I
was so pleased with my find. First of all, let's look at pelargoniums
and I have a lot of different types of pelargoniums in my garden.
They last the whole time, all the way to frosts.
Pelargoniums such as I have, they are just
annuals to me. They are all different colours, shapes, leaves, textures
and you can get variegated leaves. I think they're beautiful
and some of these I put in containers. You can see these ones
which are along my potting bench. They're in these little pots which look
very colourful but there's no good nutrients in them. They're in
the shade, they're happy and they last forever. So
my first annual that I will not be without
are pelargoniums. The second annual that I really really do
love are these ageratum and they're beautiful.
These ones are the lower ones and they're called blue mink.
So pretty, it's so nice to have blue in the garden.
I did grow some taller ones from seed, they were in a grow bag, well they still
are in a grow bag, but they're pretty much dying out now.
They were the taller ones and they're just as lovely
but these ageratums, I will definitely definitely
grow more of these and they've just lasted and lasted as you can see.
They still look pretty good, a couple dying back a little bit
but they are amazing and I love them. The next ones I have loved are these
lobelia, carpet lobelia because you can get tall lobelias
like the Queen Victoria which died on me
last year but these just go on and on and on
and they can spill over. I planted them in little plugs
and each one grows into a lovely big mound.
It has lasted since May, May, June, July, August,
we're into September now. Fabulous and I have them
dotted about everywhere and I would definitely get those again because they
are just gorgeous. The next I'd like to share with
you are these and these are brand new to me. They are
commonly known as statis but they are also known as sea lavender
and they're from the limonian family and what I like about them is they are
standing up on their own. I know I put this stake in because I'm expecting them
to flop but they've been amazing. I just have
one, two, three, five in a row and a friend gave me the plants and I
didn't know what they were and I didn't know how tall they were going to be
and how beautiful they were going to be and I put them all in a row and they've
just like, they've just been so enjoyable so I love
them and they've come up in all different
colours unexpected so that's been nice. They all
started out quite pale and now they've emerged
into beautiful lavenders and mauves and whites and I think they are very
delightful. The next annual on my list are these
zinnias and I have never had zinnias before and I bought a bag of
mixed zinnia seed and this is what happened
and it's been absolutely beautiful. They're from the daisy family
and these ones are not even planted in the ground, they're still in the grow bag
but I put the young seedlings in. Definitely, definitely
grow those again, zinnias, beautiful and I'm going to save the seeds from
these. You just leave the flowers on until
they die right back and then you can collect the seeds. I'm
assuming you just shake them into an envelope or
something like that. Maybe if the seeds drop on the ground
they seed themselves, I don't know but I'm going to save these seeds and
we'll definitely have zinnias next year. And what about
these? These have to go on your list, surely.
They're definitely one of the top things in my list, they are impatiens,
busy lizzies and look at them, they are glorious.
I haven't dead-headed them, I haven't done a thing to them, I've just watered
them if they haven't had enough water for a
couple of days because they come in a variety of colours,
beautiful colours. What's not to like about impatiens?
The only thing is you do need to put them in a little bit of shade
and these just get a tiny section of morning sun
and then they have shade because they're not so fond
of being in the full sun. I have done that in past years,
put them in the sun and you're watering them all the time because they just
can't handle it but they are fabulous and I will
always, I'm promising you, have busy lizzies in my garden.
So that's our top six annuals for the garden
and there have been other beautiful annuals too but these
are the ones that I've had to perform. They have been in
since the end of May, we're now in mid-September and they are still
looking good and going strong. I've had other ones,
they've finished but I'm looking for top quality
and performance from everything in this garden. Are you listening, lovely?
Yes, that means you too. We want good quality and top performance.
So I hope that's given you some ideas because we need to start looking
at seeds for next year before all those good ones are sold
and when the darker nights start that's what we'll be doing,
us gardeners, flicking through catalogs. Hasn't it come around quick everyone?
This year, where has it gone? Where has it gone?
It's flown by but that's the nature of the game.
Soon these annuals will all fade away and I'll take them out, another part of
the cycle over, the circle of life, that's the way it
goes but we wouldn't want it all to stay exactly
the same all year round, that would get very dull
and we've got to plant bulbs soon anyway so we're going to need some gaps.
So thank you for watching, I'm Jeanette, this is Lottie,
we are in our garden and we hope you have fun in your gardens and we will see
you very, very soon. Take care and thank you for watching, bye.
Do you want your dinner? You're hungry? Yes, I thought so.
