Hey guys, if you've ever wondered if acupuncture hurts, how big the needles are, and what it feels like, I hope this video helps answer some questions.
The biggest thing to remember here is that acupuncture needles are absolutely TINY compared to almost everything you'd find in your home, in fact, for this comparison the closest thing I could find in size was my own hair.
Hope that does a good job demonstrating the difference!

Does acupuncture actually hurt? I mean, when you think about the idea of putting
needles in your body, we've all been kind of conditioned since
childhood to hate it and not ever want to go to the doctor.
But in today's video, I want to share with you why
acupuncture, first of all, is nothing like getting a hypodermic needle
inserted into your body, but the sensations you experience are quite
different. And I also want to cross compare and show you the size of an
acupuncture needle compared to many household objects.
Hey guys, I'm Alex Hein, current doctoral student in Chinese medicine.
So let's go ahead and take a look at the comparison between an acupuncture needle
and many of the other things you might find around your home or just in your
life day to day. Alright, so here's one of the standard
gauge acupuncture needles and I want to just
cross compare it to a few things so you can see just how tiny this really is and
it's not like a hypodermic needle at all. Here's a
staple, pretty thick, actually incredibly thick
compared to an acupuncture needle. You can see it side by side.
Match really obviously is humongous compared to an acupuncture needle. I mean
it's like what 10-15 times the thickness. Here's a normal
thumbtack. I mean look at the difference here. It's
that pin is bigger than the handle alone. Here's my normal ballpoint pen.
Obviously this is huge but just comparing it to the tip you can see it's
just it's almost invisible compared to the tip.
Paper clip. Also you're going to see how big this is compared to an acupuncture
needle. It's bigger than the handle or comparable
the same size and this is a single human hair I caught
off my head. That's the closest thing I could find
to the actual size of the needle. Look at them laying on top of each other.
I mean that really is the closest thing you could find so that's a little demo.
So I hope that helps explain a little bit about what you might feel,
what acupuncture is like. I've got more videos on this exact topic so you can
know exactly what to experience, what your first appointment might be
like, as well as any adverse side effects you could expect.
But before you go I want you to leave a comment there below. Let me know for you
what is one of the biggest questions you have about acupuncture. Comment right
there below. I hope you liked today's video. Before
