This museum was created, was a concept that four men had. They were having dinner actually in 1978
and it was to house the memorabilia of the sport and the record keeping for here in the United
States. It's the National Museum of Polo and Hall of Fame. We concentrate primarily on
American players and those from other countries that have played here in the United States.
When you're here at the museum, I would love for you to look at the Frederick Remington Bronze.
It's a 1904. It depicts a fairly violent crash where one player is on the ground and the other
two seem to be continuing on for the play. That depicts a little bit of the strength of the horses
and the physical part of the game. When you're here at the museum, there is a mallet display
which tells the story of the making of the mallets. Most people think that the mallet shaft
is bamboo. It's cane. The difference being bamboo is hollow and cane is solid.
The horse part of this sport, it's felt that the horse is 80 to 90 percent of the game and the
rider's ability to make that horse perform. So the thing that's been constant for 2,500 years
is the horse and without the horse there is no game.
One of my favorites is the United States Open Championship. It depicts a chalice which actually
is a terrine and three horses supporting it. Chalice is to celebrate the game and the horses
are the strength of the game. We feel that the chalice shows the strength and the past,
the present, and the future of the game. We have another trophy here that you should probably take
a look at. It's called the Triple Crown of Polo. It depicts three horses in a circle,
three riders in different positions, and it was set up to be played for at three different
locations and thus the one winning the three would win the Triple Crown of Polo.
