Hi folks and welcome to the Truck King YouTube channel and Dawson City, Yukon. I hope that
you've been following along with our epic road trip from Tacoma, Washington up to Tuktoyaktuk
on the Arctic Ocean with a pair of Toyota Tundras. If you haven't, go watch the videos right now.
In this video we want to dive into the fuel economy. It is the number one question that
you guys have been sending to us so we're really going to dissect it so you guys know exactly what
we've been burning. So if you've been following the series, we're actually not at the Arctic
Ocean yet. Make sure you stay tuned for that video but of course we have already made it up.
We've made it back. We've done over 5,000 kilometers so we have a ton of numbers to share
and I think the first ones we're going to share before we do fuel economy are the weights of
these trucks because again that was a huge question you guys had. So we rolled over a
truck scale, right? They're weighing all the big trucks. We pulled in with the big rigs and we got
weighed as well. Eric, you got the numbers. Can you tell us what the green truck weighed?
Always like it was full of oil, full of fuel and full of mud also we can add that. Yeah. So it
weighed 6,459 pounds. Okay. That's what we got on the scale down in interval. Yeah and that was with
the trailer on it so you could probably add maybe 200 pounds of tongue weight to that weight as
well. So then moving on, what was the trailer? How much did the trailer weigh? Well what I got
of the trailer was 830 kilograms. Okay, 830 kilograms which is 1,700-ish pounds. Just under
2,000 pounds. But that was with a little equipment inside. Not that much. Our luggage, a few tires
and once again lots of mud. Yeah. And then finally how about that orange truck, the TRD Pro? What is
that thing? What we got as a weight here is 6,657 pounds. That's what it weighed at the balance
there and that is like we said full of fuel, full of oil. Even if there's a driver in the vehicle.
One driver each. Let's not forget that and I mean all the road hazards that probably stuck to the
so I mean with those numbers you're looking at about a 200 pound difference take that tongue
weight off about 400 pounds and you got to chalk that up to battery and tires. You know that Pro
it's got huge tires and it's got more batteries because it's the hybrid so it's a little heavier
and it will be interesting to see how that affects the numbers. Now once again before we get you those
numbers I'm going to throw to Dad and we can talk about how we've been driving because of course
driving style is the number one most important factor when it comes to fuel economy and we have
not been going slow. So as an ode to one of my favorite rock stars from the 70s, Meat Loaf,
we've been driving like a bat out of hell. Whatever the speed limit is we're doing 10 to 20
over constantly because it's just so much ground to cover and we're not hypermiling in any shape,
way or form. Heavy on the brakes when needed, heavy on the gas when needed and as we'll talk
about here in a few minutes we have crossed about four different mountain ranges so that is also
going to figure into our fuel economy. Yeah and you mentioned heavy brakes and gas filming we're
stopping we're starting camera guys got to run forward to get the shot the orange truck was
always the ferry for the camera so they'd run us up ahead and run us back once again so these
numbers you've got to take all of that into account when you hear our real world numbers and
we got a lot of numbers to share and that's the thing here real world just remember real world
not epa real world and i think you got to talk about the conditions too you drove through the
rain we drove through a little bit of snow we were in the altitudes we were in the flats we
were up we were down we were cold we were hot and definitely we change drivers all the time so i
might drive a little different than you you might drive a little different than eric we've kind of
switched around to give it a full data point spread all right so it's friday morning we're
fueling up just before we hit the road and this will be the second time we've filled so it's our
first opportunity to actually calculate the mileage on this truck manually so what we do to
try to keep it consistent is we will let this fill till it clicks off then wait 30 seconds then hit
the nozzle again to make sure that it is actually full and then whatever that number is we will do
the calculation and of course the most important thing is when all that's over i have to go inside
and negotiate a loan to pay for all this all right so we're going to start with our first leg that was
actually through the mountains so we fueled up in pemberton bc and we went up highway 99
one of the most spectacular parts of our drive also one of the thirstiest parts of our drive
the green trd off-road was towing the trailer through the mountains and it managed 31.4
liters per 100 kilometers on the same leg the orange truck did 18.3 not really great numbers
kind of reminiscent of the 57 to be honest the old v8 but of course this is in the harshest of
conditions going up to at least i think it was minus six minus ten and then you know almost
six thousand feet of altitude change so yeah those those numbers are really if you're going
to be pushing hard in the mountains that's what you can expect uh moving on to the next set of
numbers we came down out of the mountains into the beautiful kind of cow country between quenelle
and smithers so in that setting the green truck managed 20.6 liters per hundred with the trailer
the orange truck 13.4 liters per hundred and guys those two numbers right there
they're kind of the numbers you can stick to these trucks 13 liters empty seems to be what we did
and 20 liters per hundred towing right around that range is what's going to happen for the
rest of this trip and you know i guess feelings thoughts what do you think
well i'm going to throw in here right now because it's going to come up um that is not a heavy
trailer that we had however being the little box trailer and with its height it was really like
pushing plywood through peanut butter you could really feel it dragging on the back of the truck
so if you think that the weight had something to do with the fuel it wasn't that at all it
was the wind resistance on that trailer sure so just just food for thought yeah my my initial
reaction was disappointed i'm not gonna lie when i got in the hybrid and i was like yeah this thing's
gonna be so much better especially in the mountains on those long downhills it's not
gonna be running we're gonna be saving a ton of fuel so when we actually started crunching these
i was like yeah and now you know toyota did come out and say off the bat that the hybrid was more
for power than fuel economy but let's all be honest nobody thinks about a hybrid as power
you think hybrid for fuel economy right and especially from toyota of all brands so that was
sort of the feeling as well i was not surprised it's about the kind of uh result you will get from
a competitive competitive benchmark so i think that is honest to say that's what these vehicles
are able to do that's fair and i think the thing to keep in mind is that what we're actually trying
to compare to is the 57 of course and so those numbers destroy every one of those numbers is
significantly better than the 57 and always keep in mind that the power of these v6 twin turbos
is better than the old 57 so absolutely that's where we're going here so let me spit out some
more numbers at you now so on our next run which was the longest run that we had actually smithers
up to white horse uh the green truck now we're not towing the trailer we switched it over to the
pro so the green truck managed 12.7 liters per hundred and that was on flat ground a pretty nice
number moving on to the next segment it was also 12 liters per hundred the third segment that day
12.7 liters per hundred i feel okay about 12 that's not bad now the trd pro when it was towing
the trailer in the flat ground on that first segment we actually managed 14 liters per hundred
which is the best number you're going to hear while towing i'm gonna guess it was eric driving
then he seems to be the most calm of all of us the three of us go a little quick so i'm gonna
chalk it up maybe to the driver and the fact that that was one of the flattest sections of our trip
and it was a nice warm day as well then moving on to the next sections though this is trd pro
towing the trailer in the second segment it managed 24 liters per hundred in the third
segment it managed 21.9 liters per hundred so yeah right around that 20 mark while towing
seems to be what you're gonna do yeah and the uh the key there is mountains mountains and more
mountains and one point that i might add is i use a lot the cruise control true i don't think i ever
used the cruise control i don't drive them any cruise control so yeah that's a lot yeah that
could be one of the differences for sure i think so then the final run this is from inuvik all the
way back down the dempster on the green truck which was now towing the trailer we managed 23.4
liters per hundred 22 liters per hundred and 20 liters per hundred was getting a little bit better
all day now this is interesting too the trd pro on the gravel not towing a trailer was about two
liters per hundred worse than it was on the pavement these three segments we managed 15
liters 15 liters and 15.9 so once again you get out there and and i think we also mentioned that
the trd pro on that road was perfect it was exactly built for that road i was already telling dad that
we need to organize an off-road race on the dempster because in that trd pro and eric can
tell you this too sometimes you're really just flying along feeling comfortable you look down
and you're doing a buck 30 all of a sudden and that happened more than once so again that fuel
economy got worse but i also think it was because that truck was just so good on that road that we
were all kind of pushing a little bit yeah you get like a enthusiastic a little bit driving and
it comes easy so easy well you get the whole road to yourself you're lucky if you see another car
every hour so you tend to drive in the middle that is until you meet a tractor trailer at the
crest of the hill that's true it's scary yeah absolutely so i mean that's it for all of our
numbers we didn't do the total trip average mostly because we towed with both trucks and we swapped
back and forth so it just didn't seem fair to give you a number that was all of that rolled into
one but once again i think we come back to those two numbers 13 liters empty and 20 liters per
100 while towing that little trailer and and here's my big takeaway is it competitive with everything
else in the market yes and toyota improved it to be competitive but it won't be competitive next
year or the year after that or in three years and toyota doesn't touch these trucks for seven
years so it would have been nice if they really could have leapfrogged but yes they're competitive
today and they're much much better than they were before that's my big takeaway issue we would have
needed extra beer cans with the 5.7 liter yeah absolutely and so you know what and this is in
line with steve said this is what toyota said they went for power so you haven't lost any power going
to the twin turbo from the 5.7 and you have gained fuel economy okay so that's where we're at it's
improved so i think that's it for this one i think we're all a little worse for wear i think we're all
a little sleepier than we were when we started this trip a little tired but i also think we're
all feeling pretty good we made it up we made it back and i think most importantly ladies and
gentlemen we've been able to deliver all this information to you the audience because without
you we wouldn't be here doing this so uh please now go below in the comments let us know what you
think of the fuel economy the trip ask any other questions you have we will do our best to answer
them and while you're down there don't forget to hit like hit subscribe hit join to become a member
