that'll get you in control.
Hey, Dirt Farmer Jay here on how to get rid of those pesky fruit flies.
You know what, it's really simple and inexpensive and you can use
common items you already probably have around your household. Let's get to work
and give you the tools you need to get in control. Well what we have
here is just some very simple supplies. A little bit of sugar, one of these
plastic cups, you'll need a piece of saran wrap or plastic wrap,
some apple cider vinegar, a pen that's actually going to be used to
puncture the plastic in a moment, and then a rubber band that's used to
secure the plastic around the cup. This is really easy, all you need to do
is take the cup, put a little bit of apple cider vinegar
in it, I'm saying maybe a quarter cup.
Secret ingredient is adding a little bit of sugar,
probably about a tablespoon, swirl that around. Now why
are we using this to catch fruit flies? Well fruit flies are genetically
programmed to find fruit or anything that smells like or
is a derivative of maturing or rotting fruit and their
ability to find this is from a long distance so
they'll root it out wherever it is. So if you put together some apple cider
vinegar, add some sugar to it, you have a bait
that's almost undeniable and they'll come find it. Now what
you're going to do with the cup then is simply take a piece of plastic wrap
which is always my favorite stuff to get spread apart,
you probably have the same challenge. You're simply going to put this
over the cup, stretch it down so you have
pretty taunt covering. Let's see if I can improve that little area, there we go.
So we're going to do this, take a rubber band, put it around the outside just to
give it some tension and connection. Then you can just take a standard pen
and punch some little holes. Oh I put you know
eight, nine, ten, something like this. What these holes do is allow the odor
of the vinegar and sugar diffuse out of the top there and for our
fruit fly friends, try to say that fast, I'm
Once you put this in the pantry or on the counter, put it back in a corner,
keep it safe and you will draw the fruit flies in.
Does it work? Yeah, let me show you. Here's one that's been in operation
maybe three or four days and you can see the fruit flies climbing in there, little
holes and what happens is the fruit flies get
in, they have a difficulty getting back out
through the little holes and eventually they dry,
fly around and touch the surface of the vinegar sugar water
are entrapped by it and will drown. So you can see these are capturing really
quickly, much preferable than having them in a
cloud around fruit or around your pantry. If you found this tip to be
