There's no place like St Helena.
This island, it just sits in paradise, I have to say.
At St Helena, we call ourselves saints.
It's a good place, good people.
Because everybody you meet, well, if you pass somebody,
if you're driving, they always wave in your hands.
We do find ourselves being friendly with people.
We speak to anybody we see.
We are well blessed being here.
This is one thing why I love my own island, actually.
If the good Lord spare me near the end of next month, May, I'll be 94.
I sometimes think of my working days, how I used to work,
and I wonder to myself how I could have lingered so long.
I used to go up and down hills, carry loads on my back,
and that's usually my fingers in the cupboard right there.
We were poor and had to work very hard,
but people were happier those days than what people seem to be nowadays.
I don't know why it is.
But as for myself, I just take life as it comes.
That's the way I feel about it.
The easiest way to do this would be to use the electric thing,
but I'm somehow so used to doing it this way.
But today, things are much more convenient.
It helps us. It gives us a bit more time, actually.
But the thing is, it gives us a bit more time, but we seem to have less time.
Oh, I work hard in my young days. I work hard.
And I still work hard.
The job I do is a bit of an honest, right?
It's every day and all the year round.
Trim these leaves off.
Take the shells off it, the old shells.
Like you change your old clothes.
Yeah, let them breathe.
Yeah.
We don't use enough sprays, and we don't use enough fertilizer.
Everything is organic.
It's right?
Yeah.
Everything is organic.
We're free.
You plant your trees.
At the end of the day, you've got to see what you achieve, right?
It may take a month, two months,
but you've got to see it.
We've been working this place from generation to generation,
probably a hundred years now.
Well, I don't have money, but I've got animals.
I can get good produce from the ground and keep myself alive,
and I'm a happy saint.
If the sheep are baring at me and the chickens are crowing,
so, you know, that's it.
That's my life.
You really understand what you're saying.
You say stop, he will stop.
Every time you go, he'll go.
That's the best friend you've got,
the best friend you have to work with.
To do the work what I can't do.
He's brave.
You have to work hard to be a good farmer
and make the best of what you get.
That's what I did.
If there's a crop I had out there,
I used seed over and over,
and I had potatoes like that.
I think, you know, we need to be more thankful
and more satisfied with what we have.
When I come up in the morning,
I look around, there's little birds sitting around
and singing their songs, and I think,
now how wonderful to, you know, be able to enjoy that.
Even the crickets sometimes, they were happy.
I look at the plants, how they grow,
and I think how wonderful that is.
You know, it's a lot to keep you alive
and happy, I always think.
You know if somebody is happy, he's contented.
I'm contented with what I have,
and pleased with what I've got.
I've got beautiful memories, yeah.
If you're contented, you're making yourself happy
with what you've got and with what you do.
I've got no regrets on anything.
So just be a happy saint.
Life is what you make it.
You have to make yourself happy.
Always look into the bright side of things,
and just think what lumps of gold you've got
in your hands, but you can't see.
I may be a bit ancient, but I just love my life.
I'm just alive.
