Garden Ornament Facelift Part 2: Painting My Mushrooms. This was such a fun project and so worthwhile doing. My wooden mushrooms were looking so faded and dull, and just painting the stems, wood staining the mushroom tops and finishing them up with a coat of clear varnish has truly made them look as good as new, as well as extending their lifetime. Such a worthwhile project, especially when it’s raining and cold and you just want to get started on some gardening projects but it’s too wet to get outside. I hope this has given you some inspiration.
If you’d like to join my Facebook page, also called The Enthusiastic Gardener, you can find it by clicking this link:
Gillette here from Enthusiastic Gardener. After the success of painting my cat, which is in my
previous video, here's my cat, as you can see it looks so much better. What I thought I would do
is I'm now looking at my mushrooms, which are also made of wood and I think they would look
really nice if I spruce them up as well. So these are them, these are the mushrooms,
they're just made of wood, they were made by a local artist,
which I managed to get hold of. I've got all the materials I need because I already bought them,
so I'm going to do that. I'll just give them a bit of a scrub first,
I'll get all the dirt off the end and then I can paint them.
Lottie's having fun in the garden with my gardening gloves, by the sounds of it.
What I do, get some pots, stand them up this way in the pots, then I can paint
this part, which I'm going to do grey, and then when that's dry I can get them out,
probably stick them in the ground and then plant the top bit,
and I'm going to do that the wooden colour. So let's do that quickly now.
Can't see a thing without my glasses, so here we go.
Really quickly, let's put some grey on. Lottie's helping guard all my supplies,
she's a very good guard dog. And then if I varnish it as well,
really really make the life of it all so much longer.
She's took my gardening glove. Second one, there's not an awful lot we can do in the garden at the
moment, apart from tidying things up, weeding, maybe a bit of pruning, but it's still only
mid-February, and we had such a bad weekend. We had storm Kira, which devastated across the
country. My neighbour's wall fell down, so many things, trampolines on train lines,
oops, some schools in our area completely closed because the roof came off one of the
schools near where I work. One more, and then I will just leave that to dry,
and then once this is dry, I can varnish this side, then I can poke them in the ground,
as long as it's not a rainy day, and then I can do the mushroom top, so that will be a good thing
to do. And really, all the other things we can do is lots of planning, lots of watching YouTube
videos, that's Lucy, lots of YouTube video watching, getting tips, there's loads of good
channels of gardeners on, so many good ones, and I learn so much from them. So that's it for the
moment, that will do for now, I'm going to leave those, I'll probably put them in the garage just
in case it rains, leave those and come back to them tomorrow, whoops, they will stand up if I
stop fussing with them. I'll put them in the garage, leave them alone, well, I will, I will
Hi again, it's the next day now, and I wanted to just paint the mushroom tops with the brown wood
stain. The stems of the mushrooms are actually still quite tacky, but I've got them poked into
a big piece of polystyrene, so I should be able to do it really, really quickly, because it's so cold
out here in the garage, it's so cold, it's taking such a long time to dry, but it's been raining
non-stop, so I can't do it out in the garden. I don't want to bring them inside, because I am
the, one of the most clumsiest people you can imagine, and I'll probably spit it all over the
place and get into trouble, so I'm being out here safer, which is actually quite precarious.
Sorry, that's the squeaky polystyrene, might even varnish them in the morning for work,
then they might be dry soon.
It's most precarious.
That's okay though, because this one hasn't got the spike in it, so it's
kind of wedge it there, hopefully.
Oh, it will be okay in the end, I'm sure, that's it, let's do it, right, quick, quick, let's do this one,
come back tomorrow, because I'm varnishing.
So, here are my mushrooms, they look so much nicer than they did, I'm really pleased with those,
I wanted to quickly put them out here, because apparently we've got another storm coming,
Storm Dennis this time, we had Kira the weekend before, and now Dennis, so I'm really pleased,
they do look lovely, compared to what they looked like before, I think that's a huge,
huge improvement, and I'm very, very pleased. There's another thing that I've done, ticked
a job off the list, there you go.
