High Level Event on Financing the Global Biodiversity Framework

The world is facing an interlocking environmental crisis of unprecedented proportions, with climate change and mass extinctions both accelerating at an alarming pace. CBD-COP15.2 presents an unparalleled - perhaps our last, and only - opportunity to deliver an ambitious political framework to address the tragedy of biodiversity loss. As parties work to finalize the Global Biodiversity Framework, the issue of how to finance the protection and restoration of biodiversity is one of the most important to address and resolve.
Financing the implementation of the Global Biodiversity Framework will require both the alignment of existing finance with nature and the mobilization of new investment. Several recent initiatives, including the 10 Point Plan for Financing Biodiversity, have provided an overview and vision of the pathway to closing the biodiversity finance gap which define the role of all sources of finance domestic, international, public, and private. However, in order to realize this vision so as to ensure a high ambition outcome in Montreal and support delivery of the GBF thereafter, it will be crucial to demonstrate delivery of key actions from all players within the formal CBD negotiations process.
