This week, we're leaving Karcher Caverns State Park, and we're heading back across
all the way back up to the Colorado River, and we're heading over to Lake Havasu State
Park.
Now, we've been in this area before, but this is the first time we've stayed at the state
park, so we're really looking forward to it.
Hi, everyone.
Welcome back to Zephyr's Travels.
This week, we are at Lake Havasu State Park in Lake Havasu City, Arizona.
We've been here for a few days, and we've been having a really good time.
We've been doing a lot of kayaking and a little bit of hiking.
Not a lot.
There's not a lot of hiking.
This is more of an urban campground.
It's actually in the city of Lake Havasu, so it's a little bit of a different experience
than a lot of your state parks, which are more out in the wilderness, but it's really
nice because you're right on the lake.
In fact, our campsite had just a very short walk to a beach area where we very easily
put in the kayak.
We were able to kayak down to Lake Havasu City and go through the channel and actually
kayak under the London Bridge, something I didn't think I'd ever get to do in my lifetime,
but hey, you know.
So, let's show you some video of that right now.
This morning, we are going out for an early kayak ride.
You can see here, the kayak's all set up, ready to go.
We're meeting some friends, and we're going to meet them in the channel, Lake Havasu channel
underneath the London Bridge or somewhere in that area.
We're kind of just waiting for them to call to say when they're in the water, then we
will head out and meet them.
You've probably been wondering about our kayak.
You see it on top of our truck all the time.
This is a Hobie Oasis Tandem Kayak, and what's unique about this is these drives here.
As you can see, underneath, there's two flippers, and instead of paddling with a paddle, you
work those with your feet, and the flippers swing back and forth, and that's what propels
the kayak, and it works very well.
It allows you to kayak a little bit longer without tiring as much because you're working
your leg muscles, which are a little larger than your arm muscles, so it's a nice setup.
I also have these great seats here.
You can see they're ventilated, and they're very adjustable up and down.
You can sit low in the kayak, or you can sit up high, whatever you find that's comfortable
for you.
Now, Diane tends to sit a little lower.
I have my feet a little higher because it puts me at a better angle on my legs and my
back.
Okay, we're now cruising into the Bridgewater Channel, which will take us underneath the
London Bridge, and this should take us up.
We should be meeting our friends up here in a little bit.
Catch something?
This beach over here is the Lake Havasula State Park, part of where we're staying, and
this side, the other side of this dune, there's a campground, a private campground.
That's the ferry that you can take to the casino, and ahead here is the world-famous
London Bridge, currently located in Lake Havasu City.
These are our friends, Sherry and Jack.
They live in the Lake Havasu area, and offered to show us around today by kayak.
This should be a lot of fun.
Whatever you guys want to do, we're fine, right?
Diane, how tired are you getting?
You're doing all the work.
This week's video, we are coming to you from the cactus garden in the park, and I really
enjoy walking through these cactus gardens because they give you an opportunity to look
at the different plants that are native to the Arizona desert, and you get to learn the
names of them and everything, so when you hike through the area, you can identify a
prickly pear or maybe a purple prickly pear to a suero or other type of cactus and trees
and such.
So it's really kind of enjoyable to get to learn about this desert environment that we're
traveling through.
Let's go back to the campsite and show you around our campsite a little bit, and then
Diane will share her thoughts on what she thinks of staying here at Lake Havasu State
Park.
So what do you think of Lake Havasu State Park?
I thought it was nice.
It's, yeah, it's another great state park in Arizona.
It's right on the Colorado River.
The weather's been beautiful, but it is a very nice park.
It's been full for the time we've been here.
Being right on the water, I guess like a couple of parks would say that previously it gets
a little loud with the big powerboats.
There is no speed limit on the river.
You can probably hear them in the background.
Yeah, you can probably hear them in the background.
I mean, it's what, almost 7 o'clock at night here, and it's still in the 90s, so it's still
very nice outside.
In fact, we're sitting outside right now and just enjoying the evening weather.
Yeah, it is a very nice park.
I would recommend it if you come to Lake Havasu City.
Lake Havasu City is a very nice area.
For those of you, well, I guess a lot of you go to Florida, and a lot of the bigger cities
are pretty touristy, where Lake Havasu we found is, I mean, it's a tourist destination,
but it's not touristy like some of the other places on the East Coast in the South.
You don't have a lot of, you know, you don't see the souvenir shops and the beach shops
and, I don't know, whatever else you see, you know, like down the street.
They're all kind of just in one little area on the channel.
Right, right, and we've never looked, but here, I mean, you don't really have to have
a boat to come here, and if you don't have a boat, you can actually, you can rent party
boats, you can rent jet skis, you can rent paddle boards, they do have parasailing, they
have a jet boat, what else, they have a casino here, they have a casino boat, and you may
be able to rent other types of boats, I don't know.
Yeah, I think you probably can.
You can rent ski boats and fountain boats and stuff.
Yeah, yeah.
And the casino is on the California side because that's a reservation.
Oh, okay.
But yeah, it is a very nice park.
Auntie, you ready to go?
Come on, get in the truck.
Come on, get in there.
Good boy.
Going for a ride, Zef?
Going for a ride, aren't ya?
Yes, it's a travel day.
Boy, those birds are noisy.
They woke us up this morning at six.
I think they're probably looking for food.
Oh.
They smell, maybe they were cooking over there.
I don't know, I think they're having a family get-together because it's Easter morning and
all the birds got together.
Could be.
Anyways.
Well, our time has come to an end in Lake Havasu City.
Today we're on to Lake Pleasant.
Yep.
Yeah, in Maricopa...
Maricopa County.
Right, we're in Maricopa County.
We're outside of Phoenix.
So that'll be fun.
Another lake, another kayaking adventure.
Well, we hope you enjoyed this video.
