I'm back in the Manila Binondo Chinatown, and this time, I went with a tour guide called Old Manila Walks, and they took me to many great local Filipino food places.
Oh
It's pretty easy getting used to waking up to this every single morning
Fortunately leaving the hotel today, but before I do I want to hit up a local street market
It's essentially located market one of the biggest in Manila. I can't believe I haven't been there yet
But hitting there right now, but before that I'm a little too hungry to just wait through the traffic
I'm gonna eat one of these little moon cakes that was given to me yesterday in this little fridge
Look at this, this actually works. It's all like together and stuff. You guys never had these kind of moon cakes before
They're called snow skin moon cakes. So the skin is actually made with rice.
Oh man, the skin is mochi-ish and inside you can see the egg yolk and Lolo's filling. Moon cakes are things that
Chinese people typically only eat once a year, but they are so good and they are so bad for you
This is so yummy
And here we are right now
I'm at Keapo Plaza right behind me is the famous minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene and this right here
It's the largest market in the Philippines. We're pretty much gonna find anything you really want. There's clothes, houseware, bags,
fruits, produce
They're great, I love boiled peanuts
We have a lot of these in China really really really good a little bit softer still retain a nice crunch
These are awesome. That market is really good. If you want to go grab a cheap electronic or some groceries or seafood
It's really not good for like actual street food items. It's not that much but right near here
It's a really good place for pincet and I'm gonna move for noodles. So let's head over there
We'll see if there's any street food along the way
Found this guy serving fresh-fried calamari and isaw on the road
For this you just come and serve yourself
You grab a skewer and one piece is at three pesos. You dip it in the sauce, a little vinegar and onions
Oh my god, that's good. That's some fresh calamari, super snappy and that batter is great
He put a little spices on the calamari too, so it's got a slight bit of heat
So you dip it in that sauce, the batter soaks up some of the nice vinegar, still retains some nice crunch
This is isaw chicken intestine
I've been dipping it in the wrong sauce. His spicy sauce is so much better
If you don't like inners, don't get this. Get the calamari, but I love this
Okay, yeah, yeah add a little salt. There we go
When it comes to tropical fruits, you've got to try them in this country
It's a really short walk from the market to Banando, the oldest Chinatown in the world
And I was here last time, explored a little bit, but it's so massive
I came back because I missed out on this place last time, Raymond Lee's fried chicken and pincet
This place supposedly has some amazing noodles
I got a couple of things, the miki bihan and the fried chicken
Miki bihan is a type of noodle dish, it's basically a combination of two different types of noodles
Miki is an egg noodle and bihan is a rice noodle
And they told me that's the best noodle dish here. Two types of noodles, miki and bihan
And this thing has basically all the major meat groups. Got some chicken, some pork, some chicken liver
Calamari, all stir-fried together and also I got a half a fried chicken. This thing, not battered at all
Super crispy on the outside and with the pincet, squeeze some calamari on here. Oh, I've been waiting for this
Mmm. Oh, I love this. Needs a little more calamari, a little bit more citrus, but oh my god
It's so delicious. Two types of noodles provides two distinct type of textures. The thicker noodle, the miki, a
Bit more chew. The bihan though, soaks up all that nice flavor
It's not like this particular noodle dish has any very distinct flavor. It's just a very solid, comforting dish and they have hot oil here
There's something so simple and rustic about this dish
I mean all the ingredients they stick together and even though they have their own distinctive textures
They just work together to provide this like really yummy flavor and a comforting feeling. Some fried chicken
Mmm, this is a good combo. Crispy skin, juicy meat
This is so typical of a home-cooked meal because it looks like it's just a couple different types of noodles and whatever was left in mom
Or grandma's fridge is tossed to get on a wok and served to you piping hot
And although it's not the prettiest dish, all you taste is the love. That was just the perfect breakfast noodle I needed. Now,
I think I'm pregnant with a food baby. I gotta go back to the hotel, check out and check into a new hotel
Good morning, last full day here in Manila
I'm gonna go meet up with some friends and gonna go on a local food tour. I can't believe this trip is almost over
But one last good food day
Today I'm basically we're going with like the entire club team in a local food tour guide. This is Mark by the way
So our first stop is
Winando Chinatown. I was just there. Going back
Lupia it's a really good spring roll sort of thing
So this lumpia is about 80% vegetable tofu 20% pork
You got way different textures now and also sweet, sour, spicy, got a nice crunch of the peanuts, nice crunch of the veggies, and the wrap is really really tender as well
I love the extra garlic. This is probably the healthiest burrito
You may ever eat. That was really fulfilling. That's one of the most popular dishes to try in Chinatown here in Manila
I had that last time but this one I feel like it's a little better than what I had before
I was here the first time I was in the Philippines and we're getting different dishes than the last time I had
So this is called Hae Ma Mi, Hae is shrimp, Ma is pork belly, and then I usually put a dollop of satay
Satay? Yeah
But it's separate and then you mix it up
Ooh that's a lot of satay
Yeah, it's a bit spicy
Mmm, the soup is so unique, it's very light but a ton of umami flavor, I feel like with a tiny bit of vinegar and a tiny bit of spice, it might be even better
We can always get black vinegar
Oh, yes
Life changing with a black vinegar
Rich broth and black vinegar is this
This is deep fried tofu with sweet soy sauce
Most umami shower ever
And it looks like, what is that, nuts on top, cilantro, cucumbers, spiced chili sauce
I always dream of showering something with soy sauce cause if you want a delicious shower it's gotta include soy sauce
Fried and tender inside, look at that
Round of applause for the fried tofu
I like the way it's fried, crisp outside, soft inside
What you did on top of this with the cilantro and the crunchy cucumbers and the little nuts, that's texture perfection
Little sweet, little sour, little spicy, tons of umami everywhere
That is a great dish, I wanna try this now
So it's braised pork with salty fish sauce
This is one of those dishes that completely transforms the white rice
From something that's simply elegant to simply scrumptious
Just the rice itself, I haven't even touched the pork with the tofu yet
Just that rice, it's some of the most delicious saucy grains of God
I'll be happy to come here, get a big bowl of rice
Get this dish and that dish and that's it
And I'll be very very happy, cause the rice is already transformed
This is like rice Pokemon elevating up
This is like a little Bulbasaur turning into a Venusaur
The sauce is very rich
Yeah, I think lunch here, like if I was just coming here
Like I said, I'd just get a big bowl of rice, get some of these really saucy dishes
And I would feel really good for the rest of the day
And this is one of those older shops again, but we're coming here for one thing
This is pork, ground pork with tofu and chives
It's like a crusty, flaky dumpling
The second bite is better than the first bite
Cause the first bite, yeah, the first bite had a lot of crust
And the crust is good cause it's very flaky
But then I got the juice
And that juice, when that washes over your taste buds, then you start feeling real good
It's called lo bi hun, lo means braised
So the noodle and the sauce is quite thick
So it has rice noodle, it has shrimp, it has pork, sausages
This with a little black vinegar smells amazing
Oh, that's good
This thing just feeds directly into your soul
This thing without black vinegar would be, I think, really, really thick
It's flavorful, but it'd be a little harder to eat
And the broth is so rich and robust
This does remind me of the shrimp lor mee I had in Singapore
It's one of those dishes that you just like, one taste, you're like, oh god, that's good
This is one of those things
And you're putting rice wine into the bowl of noodles
That's what the elders do
Yeah, usually it's boiled with the broth so it evaporates
But you're adding it afterwards
Interesting, okay
Alright, I gotta tell ya, this thing has no taste
Pork wrapped in tofu and deep fried
Oh, that's crispy on the outside too
Dip it in a little bit of chili sauce
Oh, that's good
Nice crispy tofu skin on the outside
Juicy pork, nice roasted flavor
I'm gonna call this dish
Redemption from these grandma noodles
Ah, Dongbei Xuejiao, northeast dumplings
That's a familiar sight
Like, there's a lot of northeast dumpling places in New York
Oh, look at the way she's chopping it
It's like making it look like almost like a chain
Making it look like almost a spine shape
The skin is really, really thin on these dumplings
Look how juicy they are
You can see right through the skin
It's almost like I'm Superman and I got x-ray vision
And I can see inside
This is gonna be a very juicy, very meaty dumpling
Chili oil, soy sauce, vinegar, and garlic
To me, second most delicious ingredient
Inside a Chinese dumpling
Exactly what I thought
Skin melts away, not a factor
Barely keeping it on
Nice and meaty, really great chive flavor
And the pork filling is super satisfying
The more you chew, the more fragrant pork flavor
Releases
Whatever they did to season the pork filling
Inside the dumpling
Amazing job
My favorite dumplings are the ones with really thin skin
The ones that give a public speech and blushes right away
In the first five seconds
That's how thin I want the dumpling skin to be
The amount of juice, the filling ratio
Is perfect
That's what I call an iceberg dumpling
90% of the flavor and substance
All hidden
Until you put it in your mouth
The reason I love going around to different Chinatowns
Different parts of the world is that I love Chinese food
And it's just amazing to see how
Something that I love transforms
And fuses
And really kind of like morphs itself
Into something deliciously unique
With the local culture
I mean Chinese food in the Philippines
Way different than Chinese food in Malaysia
Way different than Chinese food in India
And Chinese food in Mexico
It's all different
But it's all great
And so amazingly unique
It's just like trying different McDonald's around the world
It's just so interesting to see
Alright everyone, last stop
Where are we at?
So we're now at this place called Eng Hee Lin
Which is the biggest and the brashest
Hopia store here in Chinatown
And Hopia is the mooncake
Mung bean cake
In Manila, we come to Chinatown to get this thing
Oh my god, look at all the different flavors of mooncake
Chocolate, banana
Dorian
This one is custard with coconut
This is so creamy
Coconut-y and yummy
The skin is so thin
This thing is like all filling
You don't taste much of the outside crust at all
Like the dumpling that I just had
This thing is all substance
What a fantastic dessert
And that's it for my tour with Ivan
I hope you enjoyed our neighborhood
I love it
Thank you so much for showing me all these places
And if you guys want to take this tour
It's called the Bonando Food Walk
Like the walk
And you can find that on Klook
It's one of the recommended tours on Klook, right?
He's a great guy
He knows his food
The food tour continues
We're at the area of Manila called Poblacion
It's supposed to be a really hip happening part of Manila
I think we're going on a chocolate tour
This chocolate craw involves no dessert
Savory dishes only
Ready to go
First stop
Green mango with shrimp paste
And dark chocolate
Local dark chocolate
That's sour
But the dip is better than just a pure shrimp dip
A little chocolatey
Does make a nice difference
Like a little bitter
Huge cocoa flavor
The aroma is wonderful
Very nice
I think every drink should just come with a chocolate rim
Top one complete
We are on to location number two on the chocolate craw
This is where the Fat Lady's Day Out tour grew
Of course another tour you can find on the Klook app
A pork belly sitting on a piece of toast
With cocoa nib on top
So that's made with cacao
And on top of the pork belly
There's bacon
This thing has been braised for over 13 hours
Perfect little piece of butter toast on the bottom
Crazy tender pork belly
Sandwiched between two layers of crunch
Crunch from the cacao nib
You definitely taste that slight bitterness
From that aromatic chocolate flavor
And I love how they double bacon this sucker
Like one piece of pork belly
That big? That's not enough
Crispy bacon on top
I like how they think
The chocolate adventure continues
Braised rib finger
Beef covered in chilies and onions
Splash of calamansi juice on top of that
This is everything I like
On a skewer
Smoked beef
A little crunch from the peanuts
Chilies, that coconut flavor is present
And on top of all that
Slight bitterness and aroma
From the chocolate
The more you chew the more the flavor comes out
Like all the flavors
Love this
There's a messy chili dog
I don't think I've ever had hot dog and chocolate
Anywhere in the same proximity before
Until now
I absolutely adored this
This is really the perfect sweet and savory finish
If you ever question
If chocolate and hot dogs go well together
The answer is definitively yes
There's a chili dog so instead of like
A tomato based chili, it's a chocolate based chili
That might seem really weird to you
Don't knock until you try it
It's really fun getting to explore like different ways that cocoa is used
In all the different dishes and how versatile it could be
And how delicious it can make
Something that you never think would be good with chocolate in there
Well that ends a pretty fun
Exciting food day
Tons of food tours, got to see Chinatown again
Crazy delicious chocolate food tour
That's a great last food day
Here in Manila
And of course this has always been one of my favorite countries to come to
The people are amazing, the food's delicious
I can't wait to come back
