I arrived in Davao, and the first place I had to go check out was the Roxas night market for some night time eats! The Roxas night market has a lot of repetitive foods at many of the tents, but the food was great and super cheap. The people there are so friendly and awesome too! #davao#philippines#roxasmarket
Wow.
You guys don't do that, right?
I love it.
I am on my way to the city of Davao, which is about almost a two hour flight away.
I'm heading to the airport now.
And considering what happened last time, I'm double, triple checking I'm going to the right terminal.
And if you don't know what happened, I'll leave the link for you in my description box.
Alright, see you in Davao.
Welcome to Davao.
That is some crazy traffic.
Finally in Davao, the Dorian capital of the Philippines.
And it's about 6 o'clock.
I just got off the bumpiest car ride of my life.
It was so bad, the other passenger in the van got out and walked to the hotel.
Anyway, I'm starving and I know exactly what I'm going to do for dinner.
The Rojas Night Market is right next to this hotel.
And I hear if you want affordable good food, that's where you go.
So that's where I'm going to go.
Let's go.
So right now I'm on scouting mode.
And there seems to be, there's a lot of food here, but it does repeat itself.
There are a lot of barbecues, seafood, pork, a bunch of juice stands, a lot of xiaomai, dim sum items as well.
And also a bunch of fried mochi ball type and a bunch of sweets and ice cream.
It's also super crowded and really, really smoky because of all the barbecue places.
But this is the type of smoke I actually like.
Okay, I think the scouting mission is over.
It's time to eat.
Check this out.
This is a fried egg.
It's kind of like a...
Spicy?
Yes, yes, yes.
Thank you.
This is basically a scotch egg.
And the orange is just food coloring.
And you dip the egg in this spicy sauce.
Fried orange egg.
It tastes like a fried egg.
I wish the outside was crispier.
I think this one's been sitting out a little bit.
And the outside is just a simple flour batter.
And I feel like I'm mainly eating the sauce.
And the sauce I like.
Very vinegary, spicy.
Right now, this is good.
Mainly because the sauce is awesome.
And you gotta really like vinegar.
I think getting one right out of the fryer would be actually pretty good.
The one I got was really just okay.
Because the outside was just a little too soggy.
I'm actually really loving the salad.
And the chili powder they have.
It's a really refreshing salad.
Some seaweed, some cucumbers.
Man, only if my egg was crunchy.
The pork.
The pork's the best?
Yeah, the pork is the best.
Pork belly.
That looks good.
Pastel.
Rice.
Rice, yes.
And topping, sweet topping.
Sweet topping.
Okay, okay.
Hi, can I get a choco pandan?
One.
This is Romeo.
I just met him.
Yeah.
He's gonna eat with me today.
This is the buko pandan drink.
So coconut and pandan drink.
That is good.
So I got an assortment of barbecue dishes.
Pastel, the rice.
I remember this the last time I was here.
This is the rice.
And it has grilled chicken on top.
So basically you take your skewers.
Put on your gloves.
This is the pork with that fatty piece right on top.
Take a bite.
That's a lot sturdier than I thought.
That's good.
That fatty piece is amazing.
Little charred, juicy fat.
Slightly spicy, a little sweet.
Thank you.
This is a highlight of what I got here.
Tuna collar, actually.
The flavor of this just hit me again.
Such a huge smoky flavor in this pork.
And you gotta add some calamansi on the tuna collar.
This thing is charred.
Wow, this is so pretty right now.
What you can do is take a bite of this.
Grab yourself some of the rice.
And chicken.
That's really good.
It's like I'm chewing on the smoke I was walking through a bit earlier.
And this chicken inside this rice.
That on its own is absolutely delicious.
I'd be happy to just eat this on its own.
This chicken is so flavorful and spicy.
And I can't get over how incredibly smoky all this is.
And the tuna collar.
This is burning hot.
Tell me that doesn't look just so incredibly appetizing.
This is going to be a beautiful bite of tuna.
Look at that gorgeous char.
Dip that into the calamansi juice a little bit.
Careful, careful, careful.
Real tuna collar.
One of my favorite things.
And they grill that to a point where it's a little bitter from the char.
But there's no mistaking how delicious that tuna meat is.
Wow.
Last time I had this was at Cebu.
I love how you can just get really barbaric with it.
This is basically like a tuna rib.
Oh man.
The meat towards the bone.
The pieces a little below the surface.
So incredibly juicy.
The slight bitter flavor that accompanies every bite.
And that kind of highlights the sweetness of the tuna meat.
That smoky flavor never leaves.
That thing is just infiltrating every single cell of that tuna.
This is a pork skewer.
Oh.
Whoa.
Really, really tender.
Wow.
It's like eating a really fatty piece of char siu.
Man, that fat to meat ratio.
Absolutely perfect.
I got a hot dog because I really started to learn how to appreciate hot dogs at the Jollibee.
I think I love this now.
There's such a mild flavor in this hot dog.
This thing, don't kid yourself.
When you're in the Philippines, go get yourself a hot dog.
And you'll see what I mean.
Taste it with some juice.
That's creamy.
Tuna collar, honestly, just eat it like a rib.
You guys don't do that, right?
I love it.
Biggest surprise for me, how amazingly good this chicken rice is.
Alright, I'm gonna finish off my tuna rib.
And let's go eat some more stuff.
See the juice running through this?
Like a deliciously flowing river of flavor.
If you want a juicier meat, you go a little deeper.
This thing has it all.
This stall is selling a lot of fried food items, including buchi,
which is basically a sesame ball of different types of flavors.
And then there's this thing called the dynamite.
And it sort of kind of looks like a food dynamite.
So this is the cheese dynamite.
Basically, it's a jalapeno popper spring roll.
Oh, I like this.
Really simple ingredients, not much.
And here I feel like I need some different sauce.
Love the fresh peppers.
You can taste the cheese.
It's not really overwhelming.
Crispy skin on the outside.
This is a dynamite little snack.
Oh, actually, as you bite into more, you can definitely taste the cheese.
Oh, yeah. A lot of cheese in here.
And they said to just put some mayo in here.
Oh, that's pretty perfect.
That thing, when you get into the cheese, well, it has a mighty kick.
Spicy, crunchy, slightly sweet from the mayo.
Really creamy with the cheese.
Oh, yeah.
This thing is dynamite in its spice and its flavor.
Again, fresh out the fire would be a lot better.
But this is still pretty darn good.
The crazy thing about these is that they're piping hot.
Oh, I totally forgot I got a durian sesame mochi ball.
I wasn't ready to, like, mentally prepare myself.
It's good, but I just wasn't prepared for that unique aroma that durian has.
It's basically a sesame ball.
And there is the durian in this.
Usually, before I eat durian, I have to mentally picture the aroma.
Basically, it's like when I get into a cold pool.
I like to put my toes in and then get in little by little.
But here, I just dived into that funky deep end.
I mean, it's good.
I just gotta hold my breath right now.
This is the strawberry one.
Should've started with this.
Oh, yeah.
You guys need to go down here and try this.
I've had many sesame mochi balls in my day, usually from Chinese bakeries.
But I didn't know Filipinos do this better.
Huge, nice fruit flavor from the durian to the strawberry.
Oh, Nutella.
Oh, sweet, chocolatey sesame mochi ball from the heavens.
Crunchy, chewy, chocolatey.
This market is basically split into different sections.
One part is all food.
And this part, you got a bunch of knickknacks, phone cases, flip-flops, clothing.
And it just keeps going on and on.
These are basically little fish balls.
You get them in spicy or sweet.
So there's mayonnaise and hot sauce on mine.
I can't taste the fish.
It's really chewy, very mochi-ish.
It's got good flavors.
It's got a nice crunch on the outside.
I can taste the fish a little bit.
That piece has less cover with sauce.
I can taste more of the fish.
This lady is selling burubu, which is fried chicken skin.
And you can dip it in the sour sauce or the spicy sauce.
And you can just go ahead and dip it into this bin of spicy vinegar.
See chilies and onions floating on top.
This thing is only 5 pesos each.
This is the iso, the chicken intestine.
I actually missed this.
This is really a huge Filipino specialty.
I like it.
And this is just the skewer of fried chicken skin.
Oh, the hot sauce is a lot thicker.
Oh, this is awesome.
Actually, the spicy sauce, that is really sweet.
It's sweet and spicy.
For some reason, chicken skin just tastes better in this country.
No funkiness to it.
It's got a crunchy texture.
It's kind of surprising.
Excuse my chicken skin analysis to bring you Eureka.
Say hi, Eureka.
Hi.
You watch my show?
Yes.
Yes?
You like my show?
My mom and dad always watch your videos.
Oh, thank you so much.
You watch as well?
Yes.
Okay.
Well, thank you so much, Eureka.
High five.
Anyway, the chicken skin was really crunchy.
It's pretty good.
I had to get three more.
Activated charcoal, mochi, and ube.
Activated charcoal.
I've never been into a charcoal before.
But if it tasted like this, I would do it more often.
It's just a sweet, earthy flavor.
Yeah, it's good.
I think, though, the activated charcoal mochi has been fraternizing with the durian mochi.
There's a durian peel definitely rubbed off on it.
The mochi.
This is not good.
I'm just one-biting these things now.
Oh, by the way, that matcha one is so good.
I think I might have developed a prop.
Oh, that ube.
If only I had some ice...
There's some ice cream over there.
This is supposed to be a really good ice cream place.
They got durian, avocado, mango.
Mango ice cream.
Tastes like a really creamy, thick mango.
Like a frozen mango shake.
Okay, I think I basically tried all the different foods that's available in the market.
Well, except for the fresh fruit.
But I had some mango ice cream, so that counts, right?
And like I mentioned in the beginning, the food stalls do tend to repeat themselves a lot.
But what this market lacks in variety, it 100% makes up in value.
I mean, everything I had in the beginning, the barbecue, the tuna collar, $4.
Nowhere in the world can I get that good of a deal for such delicious food.
And it wasn't like $4 and it tasted like it was $4.
It was $4 and it tasted like 100 bucks.
Most of what I had tonight, wonderfully delicious.
And I just can't believe, when they tell me how much it is, I just like...
I feel like I'm robbing you right now.
Also, one more thing I want to point out, and it's another reason I love this country oh so dearly.
People, some of the nicest you will ever meet.
I mean, they didn't mind I was filming because I'm by myself.
So, sometimes I need to put my food somewhere.
The vendors even help me hold my food as I'm holding the camera, talking to myself.
And a ton of people came out to take photos.
And everyone was so sincere, so polite, so, so sweet.
This is why Philippines, one of my favorite countries to go in Asia.
Oh, hi. Nice to meet you.
I'm a viewer.
Oh, thank you so much. Thank you.
Yeah. So, welcome here in Davao.
I appreciate that. I love being here in Davao.
Wow, that's so cool.
Hi.
Hi. Hey, how you doing?
Hey, nice to meet you guys.
Are you doing some vlogging?
Yeah, I'm doing some vlogging.
Want to be on my show?
Say hi.
Hi.
All right, I'm going to go back to the hotel, work out, and go to bed.
Long day tomorrow.
Last thing, just going to go get some water.
All right, guys. Good night.
