The big boys of fast food made it to Siberia but not so long ago.
Today we want to introduce you to some local delights.
So it's first thing in the morning and what do people have in the morning?
Pancakes. We're on our way to Sibirski Blini or Siberian pancakes
which is a local fast food place created in the next city along
called Tomsk. There's about 70 around Siberia
and they've got all different flavors of pancakes sweet savory
We are going prepared in there by the way. We've started all the fillings.
It shows what we want to have otherwise I think we'd be choosing forever in there.
There's far too much.
The training was too long and I decided against it.
So here we have fish and chips pancake.
The tsars pancake with some fish and caviar with apple strudel.
Apple strudel.
That's for later.
And one with tom yum filling.
Very traditional.
Very strange.
We did actually want another one which was with beef but they said after we'd ordered
oh actually we don't have that so we went for tom yum instead.
Why not?
Let's try the tom yum first because I've got a suspicion it could be very interesting.
Hopefully you can see it.
That's a hell of a lot better than I thought it was going to be to be honest.
It actually tastes like tom yum.
I like it.
I'm actually really really surprised.
I thought it's going to be meh.
When we saw there was green beans in there we thought really in a pancake.
Yeah in a pancake.
So inside there's a massive fish cake which we're guessing is cod.
Tartar sauce and then some like really thin almost cross between crisps and chips.
Yeah hot crisps.
So curious.
Honestly my whole life I've never thought there would be fish and chips in a pancake.
Cheers.
I think they know what they're doing.
So in here we've got caviar, lots of herbs and what else?
What's the sauce?
I think it's like cream cheese and possibly salmon.
This one's my favourite.
It's gone like that.
So hopefully the sweet one keeps going like that and doesn't dive off.
I prefer the savoury ones for sure.
Me too.
But it's nice, it tastes good.
That was a good start to the day.
Now we're going to Podorozhnik.
This is a local place.
It was found in 1995 in Kemerovo and there are lots of pavilions across the city.
This is what we got.
This is Matt explaining the set.
This is called The Elephant.
Basically it's a big burger.
I think it's the biggest one I've had in quite a while.
My brother got the one that's called Russian Dough.
I think it looks like the Russian Dough.
I think there are lots of different types of meat and again...
Three different types I think, yeah.
And I think my sister and I got Makhdov.
So we got this.
And they're with like mushrooms inside.
They could warm them up for us in the shop and we could eat them there.
But we chose to bring it home and we're going to microwave them now and come back.
And they're hot.
Let's open them up.
I remember when I was little and we would go somewhere for a long journey in a car.
We would also buy a lot of different ones of these.
Let's try them.
For us in the UK, a burger you get from a burger van on the side of the road.
It's good.
That was okay.
It was nice. Yours was really really nice I think.
I think I was the luckiest one for sure.
There are bakeries on every single corner here.
And if you can't see any bakery there'll definitely be some bakery in store in any supermarket.
So we went to a few bakeries yesterday and we've got a little selection here.
This is called Pirozhok or like pie it translates.
It's basically a fried pastry with a sausage inside.
I think our one's got potato inside as well.
Sausage and potato yeah.
It's like a really common snack even throughout Russia and obviously Siberia.
And this is a pie called Rybko Posarsky which is fish or the sars fish pie.
It's a pie with fish and I think some cheese in there.
Yeah there's cheese in there.
Apparently it's amazing.
Typical things that people here might get grabbed from the bakery to take with them on a day off.
A fast food of sorts.
Yeah.
Also we have some sweet treats.
There is like a brioche bun I think with blueberry.
And here is bun with some pistachio paste inside.
Yeah we're gonna have them later as well.
Pistachio cream.
So good.
And the star of the show.
That's it.
So much fish.
That's top of the lot right.
We just warmed up some sweet bakes and we're going to try them.
There's a blueberry jam and a brioche bun basically.
There's a lot of filling in there.
It's really light in texture and the brioche is not too sweet so it goes really well with jam.
And this is the pistachio bun.
It's supposed to have pistachio cream inside.
It's so good.
Really nice.
The cream actually tastes like pistachios.
I'm bummed out.
The next place we're going to is not exactly a traditional Russian food.
Shawarma was obviously founded in the Middle East but it's incredibly popular here.
There's kiosks selling shawarma all over the city and it's incredibly nice so we thought
we'd give it a try.
This is the small one and this is the large one.
It's a little bit broken.
Mine's broken a little bit.
I think because it's so big it's folded in half and also we were walking home so it got a bit...
Yeah.
Apparently this is the best shawarma you can get in town from the words of my sister so
we're going to test it now.
So I'm sure everyone knows what shawarma is but for those who don't
It's chicken like off of a skewer with vegetables, sauce, sometimes cheese, sometimes chips.
I would have put chips in mine and then yeah just a sauce.
And they put their own sauce in there which is I think a mix with cheese and like garlic
sauce as well which is really nice.
It's good.
This is really popular food over here.
Just sort of grab and go.
Thank you very much for watching this video.
Hope you enjoyed it.
We've got loads more videos coming from here in Siberia so we'll see you in the next one.
We've been waiting to film this about Siberian fast food for a little while now.
It's been really cold as you've probably seen over the last week or so.
So down even to minus 40.
But today it's positively tropical.
It's minus 25 so we thought it's the perfect day to do it.
You can really hear...
I don't know if you can hear it but we can really hear the pigeons.
Like screaming.
Which we're guessing is something like cod or maybe not even fish.
I love caviar.
Expensive taste.
