Traveling across Russia in Winter. (How bad can it be?)

The journey here to Yakutsk took five days across the entirety of Siberia.
The journey back, in principle, should take us 10 hours including a four and a half hour flight
to Novosibirsk and then a four and a half hour bus to Kemerovo. The only caveat to that is today
we're flying from the world's coldest international airport and we're flying in the middle of January
and the problem with flying during this period of time is when the cold weather really bites.
When I say cold weather I mean like the minus 50 minus 49 degrees celsius weather here in Yakutsk.
The fog sets over the city and as you would have seen in all of the videos we've recorded here in
Yakutsk there is a heavy heavy fog at the moment and when that happens flights can sometimes be
cancelled for days. We're in the airport now and so far our flight hasn't got any delay or hasn't
been cancelled so things are looking up and hopefully by tonight we should be back in
Let's see. Do you know what the funny thing is? Who thought we'd be going to Siberia
like we're flying to Siberia to warm up and we're able to dress down? Not me.
Do you need two pairs of socks? Yeah mainly because I couldn't be bothered to take the other one off.
Camel socks. Yeah take the Mongolian camel socks off.
Only a half hour delay. Hopefully it stays that way.
So we've made it to Novosibirsk where it's positively summer compared to Yakutsk.
It's minus 33 here and that's fantastic because we're about to go out to the bus stop
and stand there for as long as it takes for us to get a long distance bus to Kemerovo which is
about a five hour bus journey and when we looked online it looks like there should be a bus in
about 20 minutes but we'll see. So the other option from here if there isn't a bus going
from the airport is to go into the city to the main bus station which is next to the main
train station and get a bus from there which is what you did last year wasn't it when you came on
your own? I arrived in the train station and the bus station is literally right there.
But there should be buses from the airport in principle so let's see. So we're at the bus stop
and Kemerovo is written here 10 10. The time now is what Yul? Quarter to 10.
So effectively we've got time if we don't freeze in the meantime.
We decided to get a taxi to the main bus station and got the ticket here
so we're supposed to leave in about an hour.
Oh you finished? I thought you were waiting for the speech to finish.
Did you call Yul? Wait for an hour.
It's pretty straightforward isn't it? It is. So yeah for now we are just going to go to
a cafe somewhere on the square here and grab a drink because
trying to stand outside in minus 30 is not fun. Oh no let's go back.
Is it me or is it? Hold on i've got it. You got that i got this.
To be honest it's minus 30 here but with the wind as well and the fact that we're
not wearing as many layers it definitely feels colder here. How ironic.
All right we made it. We did film the boarding process but the camera switched itself off
because of the car. Sorry? Are you ready to get the last bus? Yeah almost there.
Do you want me to take your bag? That was great timing. That was great timing.
I haven't seen them for like 10 days. I'm so excited. I was just thinking I remember when
I went to Krasnodar with my auntie I was about 12 and I was away for like three weeks
when I came back I expected the city to look completely different and I was told I was a
bright child. So I didn't want to say it up until now but apart from the half hour we had in the
morning in Yakutsk we haven't had any other delays all day. I didn't want to jinx it too early but
yeah we can say it now that's been a pretty smooth trip. 12 hours from leaving the apartment
in Yakutsk all the way to the other side of Siberia. All five days. All five days on the train.
I just checked on the bus it's minus 26 and that actually feels warm now.
This feels really really comfortable here to be honest.
No.
Welcome back to Kemerovo where the current temperature is minus 8. Slightly different to
and we're on the way to my auntie's to do something I've been wanting to do.
I want to say the whole winter but no. The whole two years we haven't been here.
That was so unimpressive. What did you expect? A backflip?
Don't do that. I love snow but don't bury me here.
Fat ass. Thank you very much.
Andrey don't leave.
Impressive. I don't know why in my head I thought it's gonna be so epic.
That's quite a hole to be fair.
It honestly looks so unimpressive on the camera.
Again again.
I won't lie to you that it's the next day or even though it's a week later it's about 10 days later
and we're actually leaving tomorrow. I don't know how this happened but things like that do happen
sometimes. We planned to do a lot with you when we return back here but we ended up editing all
the videos that we have and preparing ahead and planning our further itinerary because it's going
to be quite intense so we need to make sure that everything's sort of in place and we wanted to
go outside with you, walk around and stuff. I don't know if you can see this. Now you can see
there. There is basically a smog and actually this is not as bad. My grandma's reading an article
today that apparently the air is so bad, has been bad last couple of days at least, that it's
deadly and it's been advised not to open your windows and best not to go outside. I don't know
what's going on but yeah it is what it is so we're not gonna go outside. I just wanted to say thanks
for joining us for this series with my family and I'm incredibly happy that we decided to
finally get to Yakutsk which was Matt's dream since he was a teenager, I think since he discovered it
on the map. Starting this journey in the first place it was about trying to build a life connected
to something we love doing together and last year has been difficult to say the least but we decided
that this year is going to be about going to places that we want to go and showing things that
we want to and then we're both, I won't say I am, but we're both incredibly excited about it so
I can't wait to share everything with you. Thanks for being with us, thank you for your support
and thanks for watching this video and as usual I see you in the next one!
