I arrived in Malaysia and went straight for the food. Jalan Alor is located in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, and is full of hawker stalls that sell a variety of culinary delights from dumplings to many types of durian!
I went with a couple of local friends and they showed me some of the most famous stalls, as well as some must-get street foods when in Malaysia.

Your stomach is the universe.
You can see the Twin Towers from here. Anyway, I just got to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
First time here. So excited to be here. I'm sorry about my voice.
Just a little sick lately. Anyway, this trip's gonna be a lot different than the other food trips
I've taken because I'm not really sure what I'm gonna be eating here in Malaysia.
There's some really good friends I have in Malaysia.
All I told him was, hey, take me to whatever you think is the best food here, and I'm just gonna eat it.
Come on, let me show you. This is Rick.
Rick is gonna take us around for the next few days, and you know what we're gonna eat. The good stuff.
I'm gonna depend on you because I have no idea what I'm eating. Where are we going tonight?
Jalan Alor.
What's that?
Jalan Alor is a street.
We're going to have the
roasted chicken wings.
So it's a street full of food places.
Food street. Okay, I'm excited. So we're gonna do some Malaysian street food. Are you hungry? All right, let's go eat.
That's beautiful.
Indian food.
It's Chinese New Year coming up.
So it's decorations up.
A lot happening here.
Oh, that's nice.
Put up your hands.
That seems to be the very universal Southeast Asian way of not getting hit by a car or a motorbike.
Wow, this street, I can already smell the food.
It's making me hungry.
Okay, on the left.
Guys, this is beautiful.
Look at this.
This is my type of heaven.
I can smell the different cuisines here.
So what are we gonna eat?
All right. Oh man, this place looks awesome.
This is the restaurant that I'm talking about.
Huang Ah Hua.
Basically, they occupy
these four
shops, you know.
How big is that?
It's huge.
Let's get in. This place is packed.
We're actually gonna go meet
some of our other friends as well.
Hi.
Good to meet everybody.
I know we're getting the chicken wings. I'm not sure what else.
But I'm just gonna leave it up to them.
So this is like a really famous place.
I see like celebrity pictures on walls.
Greg, you said this place,
you gotta order really fast.
Not the place fast, but don't be
dragging too long. The boss will get angry.
So it's kind of like New York.
You walk into a New York pizza place
and people want you to order right away.
Oh, okay.
I hear fish.
It's getting intense.
Some intense food conversation
going on.
Oh my god.
Oh, I need this
in my life. So
much. By the way, the sequence of things might throw you
guys off a little bit. The reason I'm here
standing by this magnificent creature is after
we ordered the seafood, it takes about 30 minutes
to cook. So I came to walk around
and ran into this. I haven't had the seafood
yet, but I'm gonna go try this lamb
and then go back in for the seafood. Bunch of spices
here. Just ton of beautiful smell
coming out of this. And he's stir frying it right
on the grill itself. I'm sweating because
it's hot here and I'm standing so close
to the rotisserie. I'm gonna get a order of this
and try it. So gorgeous. That's
my hero right there. My barbecue
hero. Couple little bamboo sticks.
See this? And I can easily poke holes
in the flesh. Look at that. Just
covered in chili and spices.
Oh, man. Oh.
Oh, this thing is ridiculously tender.
Got a lot of heat.
Zero gaminess at all.
I'm gonna dip it a little bit in the black pepper
sauce.
That's so ridiculously soft. It tastes
like giving the lamb a hug. You know, you
just feel...
Just kind of feeling all that gentleness.
Mmm. So tender.
Such a great smoky flavor
to it. My first bite of food in Malaysia.
I'm so glad I was there. Whoa, I've never
seen durian this small before. Is this a good durian?
Should we try it?
Yeah.
The star? What does that mean?
Musang King. Oh, what is the
Musang King durian?
Is that the best one?
Yeah? That's why it's called a king.
There we go.
Oh.
It's a lot smaller than durians I've
seen before. Oh, I smell it already.
Oh, my goodness.
Oh, wow.
Sweet and bitter?
Okay, usually durian is
I don't know why, but durian in the U.S.,
it smells bad. It smells like
wet socks and onion.
But here, durian, the durian
I had in Vietnam in here,
it smells actually kind of good.
It's not as putrid of a smell.
Maybe because it's completely fresh. I don't know.
Yeah?
Wow. Rich loving it.
Oh.
It is a little bitter. Not too much, though.
This is the second time in my life that I actually
like durian. The first time was in Vietnam.
This is the second time. This is actually really, really good.
Creamy, custardy,
sweet. I never had durian that's a little
bitter. And that's like the characteristic of the
Musang King. Obviously, Rich loves this.
This is really good.
Rich is going to show us something. What is this?
Okay, this is how we're going to wash
our hands and drink some water.
Because durian is quite heaty.
It's sticky. Yeah, honestly.
So sometimes it's quite smelly.
And your hands.
I think it smells good. This is what we do.
So I pour some water
inside the shell.
And then wash your hands.
Just like that?
Oh.
Why don't you just pour from there?
No. No what?
It is like, I don't know why, but
it is a trick. Oh, this is the way it is.
This is the way it's done.
So just like wash your hands.
So wash away the durians.
And to
getting a voice
to be like, you know, having some
So drink the water.
So people
do that, then they will like
not getting that heatiness.
Okay, that's really interesting. Did not know
that's how you clean your hands and
cleanse your mouth a little bit.
Oh, our food's ready.
We're going to go back to get our seafood.
And our chicken wing. All our stuff is
here. That's the famous chicken wing
I hear a lot about. Okay, what is all
this?
Like noodles,
sort of.
I don't know what
it's called in English, but we call it
sea snail or something like that.
And this is the vegetable.
And this is the salted egg squid.
Okay, I heard about this from Adam
Richmond. He said I must try that.
Okay, so let's
This is the Hokkien mee.
Oh, Hokkien.
I had Hokkien in Singapore.
So this looks completely different.
The grilled fish.
Oh, this is stingray.
Famous satay in Malaysia.
Okay.
I'll pass it down. Here you go. Cheers, my friend.
Oh yeah. Really smoky.
Charred. Sweet.
Peanutty.
Spicy. So this is like
the Hokkien mee. Smells crabby.
Smells like crab.
Oh man. Prawn or crab.
Some seafood in here.
This is it. This is the famous
salty egg squid.
So the salted egg is, I guess, in the batter here.
How is it?
If you like salty eggs, which I love,
you gotta get that.
Alright, I gotta try these chicken wings.
Definitely.
Oh man.
Oh yeah. Oh wow.
Oh yeah. That's great.
It's a little sweet.
A little soy sauce flavor. Extremely tender.
I think it's grilled perfectly.
Alright, I gotta try these. You've been saying this is awesome.
Fried mee bun.
Oh, I see, I see, I see.
They put a lot of seafood in here.
Fish cakes.
Malaysian food, not a lot of spicy.
Once they have spicy, it depends on what kind of
spicy level you want.
Some people, they like
very spicy.
So you just tell the chef,
I like spicy.
And then we'll give you tight spicy.
This is amazing.
Wow.
Oh, it's insane.
These thin noodles.
Parts of it is kind of toasted.
You get a nice crunch factor.
I love the flavor of the rice noodles.
Oh, that's delicious.
I hope you like it. This is awesome.
It's a little creamy because there's some eggs in here.
Fish tofu is good. Nice crunch of the
Chinese broccoli. A little bitterness, a little
sweet. Extremely fragrant.
You can see the eggs, right? The egg yolks.
Yeah.
This is one of my favorite noodles
I've had maybe in my life. This is fantastic.
Let's keep it going.
Water spinach.
This is the sambal sauce.
Sambal sauce.
Wow.
I love how spicy and fragrant
this is. I love the shrimpy smell
of it. This clam looks like
it has some serious sauce on here.
Like just tons of sauce.
Alright.
Fresh, sweet, very savory
sauce.
The stingray. This is
a fish that's often overooked, but
this is one of the meatiest, nicest fish.
Wow.
That meat is just like
no little bones, you know? It's like the perfect
fish steak. I think my favorite
of all this is
that noodle is just mind-blowing.
It's fantastic. Love the squid and salted
I love this chicken wing. There's so
much flavor in this chicken wing. This is typically
what you guys eat. Like a Malaysian
feast.
This is a lot of stuff that you would get.
All these dishes
over here, I guess it's a mix
with Chinese, Malay,
Indian.
It's almost
like a combined. Yeah, combined
flavors of different cultures
in Malaysia. No wonder people keep telling
me, you gotta come to Malaysia to eat, because you guys
have all the good food hidden here. Alright, we're gonna
sit down and just devour this,
and I'll see you guys in a little bit. Oh, what is this?
Yeah, this is something
that I want you to try.
What is this? Abong.
What's inside? Honey oats.
Honey oats.
Wow, this is great.
It's so thin, and
the inside, the oats are a little chewy,
so you got a little chew factor to it.
This is fantastic.
Heck yeah, this is great.
Oh my goodness.
We're gonna need another bag
of that later.
That is so good. Oh wow. So it's just
corn and butter. Corn, butter, and salt.
Corn, butter, and salt? Is that good?
Nice. Yeah?
A little salt.
Wow, that's good.
Yeah.
Alright, check it out.
Oh my gosh, that's
awesome.
Try it out, try it out. Okay, okay, I gotta
take a bite.
The corn, right, it comes from
Cameron Highlands. The corn is
so tasty, and it's so juicy.
I think this is one of it.
It's so sweet, and like you said,
it's just full of pop.
Oh, it's
juicy as heck. Oh, that butter is nice too.
It says traditional Malaysian
snacks. Fried banana.
Oh, it's soda!
What are they serving here?
Oh, it looks great. Wait, wait, what is that?
Oh, so this is pandan leaf,
and then palm sugar. So this is the
steamed rice. Interesting.
Look at these little steamed
rice patties sitting on a
banana leaf. Some shaved coconut,
palm sugar.
Wow.
It tastes like the most airiest,
lightest rice cake.
Good job.
Bora Bora.
Coconut ice cream.
Oh, thank you.
What do you think
I should do? So peanuts,
dry coconut, and cereal.
Look at this. Look how pretty this is. Little half
coconut ice cream thingy.
Oh, that's
as coconut-y as you can get.
Whoa, check it out.
On the bottom, there's like big pieces of coconut.
Oh, thank you, thank you, thank you.
Sugar cane with lemon.
Anytime I'm in Southeast Asia,
I gotta have some sugar cane.
Sweet, citrus-y,
refreshingly delicious.
Hey, I wish it was a commercial. Look how pretty this is.
Keep passing by these like really
colorful dim sums, and
this is one of the rare places that
sells pork. Chili,
yeah, 100% chili.
That's pretty good.
Nice pork dumpling.
That's really
delicious.
Oh, check it out, check it out.
So he's pouring liquid nitrogen.
Oh, actually, this feels
really, really good. These are cookies.
Thank you. They feel really cool.
Whoa.
It's just fun, you know?
Wait, wait, wait.
Are those lychee?
That's actually really cheap. A kilo for
10 ringgit, that's like
$2.50
for a kilo. That's a really
good deal. It looks like a rambutan and a lychee.
Oh, yeah. It tastes exactly like
a rambutan, but I've never seen like a rambutan
this big before.
Wait, you can eat
the seed? No, really?
Oh.
It is like almond.
Wow.
I want to try something. I want to just put this
whole thing in my mouth and just chew it.
Sweet, crunchy, juicy.
That is nice. Oh, check
this out. Fried durian. Let's do this.
I had the fresh durian and I liked it.
I think that's pretty good.
Your stomach is a universe.
You can really eat a lot.
That is pretty good.
Before, like when I was in the States,
I hated durian because it literally
stunk like socks.
But having that
fresh durian in Vietnam and now here,
this is
great. Like if you're
eating durian, you're like, oh, this smells
like a bathroom. That's not the right stuff.
You come here, this stuff is great.
Alright, the last
thing we're going to eat today
is we're going to go back to durian and
we're going to go try what's called
XO durian. Now,
I had no idea there were all different types
of durian. So the one we ate earlier was
the Cap Mountain King
durian and that was like really sweet,
creamy, delicious. But Rick here says
he really likes this thing called XO
durian, which is like, you know, kisses and
hugs durian. And he's saying it's going to
taste a lot different. We're going to go try this one out.
Wow. Oh, that's way
different. I feel like the Cap
Mountain, it is sweeter.
And this is more like
punch me in the face.
It's kind of powerful.
Wow. Wow.
Oh, it's
bitter, but not like, you know,
Chinese medicine bitter. It's like
it's good bitter. It's good bitter.
But that first bite is kind of like
jumping into ice water. You kind of got a
shock with how bitter it is
in the beginning.
Whoa. Like everybody
I think is like, I've been shocked for like
a minute second. And then as I'm
chewing it and the taste
start getting really good later.
So we're going to do the thing again where we...
Sometimes they will add some salt inside. Yeah.
And the flavoring is nicer.
Cheers guys.
To the final durian.
And the end of a great night of food.
This has been like just amazing
first day in Malaysia.
I didn't know what to expect.
Like I said, I didn't know where I was going.
So everything is up to this guy.
I love this whole street.
I love the vibe of it. I know it's kind of touristy,
but you say locals come here as well.
Man, I tried some good stuff today.
Thank you so much Rick.
And until tomorrow.
More Food Adventure awaits us tomorrow.
Thank you all so much for watching.
Until we eat again, which is tomorrow.
We'll see you later.
