Hi guys, this is Megan from the blog wilsonholmson.com and today I'm going to show you our new absolute
favorite toothpaste recipe. We've been using this for a bit now and we absolutely love it. I've
actually seen a big difference in the whiteness of our teeth and I'm just so so excited to share
this with you guys because it's it is amazing. So I've been hearing for a while now about how charcoal
and turmeric can whiten your teeth but I have to admit I've been a little bit skeptical about it,
a little bit afraid to try it out just because I've seen the damage they could do. Like both
of those things are very staining. I've seen what happens when charcoal gets on clothes or in grout.
Turmeric tends to stain things, it even stains your skin. I've done turmeric face masks and it
leaves a bit of residue on your skin for a while. So honestly I was pretty scared to try it just
because I thought it would stain my teeth even though I've heard that it's not supposed to.
When you see your teeth and they're covered in charcoal it's a little bit scary.
But I'm here to tell you that it does wash off. It doesn't stay on at all, it leaves no residue.
As soon as you rinse your mouth out it's all gone. So I have another toothpaste recipe here
on my channel that I will link for you guys. It's a bit of a simpler one, it just has coconut oil
and baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, and a couple essential oils. And that one is still a really
good one and it's a bit simpler if you don't have turmeric or charcoal on hand. But this recipe is
on a whole nother level, I have to tell you. I don't think we'll go back to the simple recipe
unless we run out of those other two ingredients just because this one is so nice and we've been
loving it so much. So I'm going to share the recipe with you guys and then afterwards I will
go into why charcoal and turmeric are so great for this afterwards. Because I know some people
aren't watching this video for all the chattiness, they just want to hear the recipe and get on with
their lives. So let's get into this recipe real quick and then afterwards I will go into more
So the ingredients you'll need are coconut oil,
hydrogen peroxide, baking soda, activated charcoal powder, turmeric powder, and essential oils. And
today I'm going to use peppermint because that is just a really great oil to use in toothpaste
because it makes it taste minty like how toothpaste is supposed to taste. I love adding in clove and
lemon because both of those oils are amazing for dental health. I will link the blog post for this
recipe down below because it has a printable recipe card if you guys want to be able to print
this recipe off and have really easy access to it. So first you're going to measure out
half a cup of coconut oil and now it's easiest if the coconut oil is nice and soft or melted.
It stirs into your other ingredients really nice you don't want it to be a hard block. So our house
has been really hot lately so it's been just a really nice soft texture which is super handy
but in the winter I do have to melt it and it's perfectly fine to do that too. And then to that
you're going to add a quarter cup of hydrogen peroxide, a half a cup of baking soda, two
tablespoons of charcoal powder. Now I know that doesn't seem like a lot but I have to tell you
charcoal is really strong and it goes a long ways. It's going to make this toothpaste completely
black from just two tablespoons. We're going to do five tablespoons of turmeric powder,
20 drops of peppermint essential oil, 20 drops of clove essential oil,
and 10 drops of lemon. And then you're just going to mix them all up really thoroughly. If your
coconut oil is a little bit on the harder side it really helps to mix it in something like a
KitchenAid because that is a bit stronger than I am but if your coconut oil is soft it mixes up
really nicely. And then I like to let it sit for about 15 minutes and this is because the hydrogen
peroxide and the baking soda have some sort of a chemical reaction and for a long time when I was
first making this recipe I would forget to do this every time. I would scoop it into my jars
and then I would put them in the bathroom and come back a little later and there would be a
humongous puddle on the counter and a big cold mess. And I'm pretty sure it's the baking soda
and hydrogen peroxide that kind of react together and they start like expanding and they do it
really slowly so you don't really notice it at first. Just keep that in mind when you're doing
this. So I like to stir in all my ingredients, let it sit and do its thing for about 15 minutes,
and then come back and put it into jars. And by then it's usually done being weird. And after
that you just spoon into your jars. I like to store it in glass mason jars. I either do half
pint or pint size and that works out really well for us. And then you just use it as needed. This
might be a bit different if you're coming right from using store-bought toothpaste because you
have to dip your toothbrush into a jar to get out the toothpaste instead of squeezing it out of a
tube. It's really not that bad once you get used to it. At first I felt like a barbarian but now I
don't even think twice about it because we've been doing it for like three years so. And then you're
done. Let's go a little into about how charcoal works and why it's so great to use in toothpaste.
So activated charcoal is a very absorbent substance. It removes toxins because they will
attach themselves to the charcoal and then charcoal will get passed through and it'll remove
the toxin. Actually in the 1800s there were two men that took lethal doses of poison and actually
lived. And how they did that was they mixed the poisons with activated charcoal. Now don't try
that at home because that's not worth the risk but that's just really interesting to see how
effective it is at pulling out toxins and things that are bad for your body and that's just amazing.
It can bind toxins from all kinds of things from household cleaners to medicines that have been
ingested and all kinds of other chemicals in the body especially when the charcoal is taken within
30 minutes of ingestion. And so for that reason you should be careful not to take charcoal right
after you take a medicine or even vitamins because that would kind of undo the effect
and that would be a bummer if you're trying to do something with the vitamins and medicine.
Activated charcoal can actually change the pH of the mouth and that makes it really effective
at preventing cavities and killing the bad bacteria present in both tooth decay and
something like gingivitis. So you can see how this is just super effective at this and even
though it's going your mouth is going to look really black and scary while you're doing it,
it's going to pull out all those toxins and remove stains from your teeth and it's just
going to be really awesome. So turmeric is a spice that people have used in medicine for a
long time. It's actually used in traditional Chinese medicine. It owes a lot of its healing
properties to its active component which is curcumin. I actually have been taking curcumin
pills for a while now to help regulate my high thyroid so the things that curcumin and turmeric
can do is just amazing. But this can treat infections, skin diseases, stress and depression
and it has a positive effect on gingival inflammation and it can be really effective
at reducing pain in your mouth. So isn't that amazing that two really simple ingredients that
are so easily accessible to pretty much anyone can be so effective at cleaning your teeth.
Americans spend billions of dollars every year on teeth whitening strips and all kinds of crazy
things that are actually really dangerous and harmful and most of the people using it
aren't even aware of the risks. And conventional toothpastes are usually full of all kinds of
toxins and chemicals which as you guys know if you've watched any of my videos I'm all about
keeping any of that stuff away from my family and anything like this I can make myself. I will
definitely give it a shot. And we've been using homemade toothpaste again like I said for three
years and we haven't had any cavities. Our teeth have actually gotten whiter since especially we've
been using this one. So anyway I think that's all for you guys. I feel like this was a really
rambly video and I'm sorry if it was but I'm just really excited about this and I tend to talk a lot
when I'm excited so. But again I will link the blog post down below with the printable recipe card
and it also has links to where I get all of these different ingredients if you guys aren't sure where
to get a certain thing. So I hope you guys are having a great day and I'll see you in my next video. Bye!
