Solo 3 Day FLY FISHING_ BACKPACK Camp- Snowy Mountains.
Well boys and girls, welcome to the beautiful snowy mountains of the high country of Australia.
We're back out in Kosciuszko National Park this weekend and it feels so bloody good to be back
out here. I absolutely love this place, especially when the weather's like this. It feels so nice,
it's like pretty fresh. It's about three, maybe four degrees now, the sun's popped its head out
but when I left the car it was about two or three degrees, so pretty chilly this weekend. We're in
the middle of May, we're only a few weeks away from these hills having some snow on it, but man
it just feels so nice to have this like fresh amount of air in the lungs. It feels so good for
the soul to be back out here. So the plan is we're going to walk off country about 9km behind these
hills and there's a little valley planned to camp at tonight with some nice big granite boulders
from what I can see on satellite imagery. There's a stream running through it so hopefully there's
some trout in there. I've got the fly rod with me this weekend so hopefully we can catch ourselves
a nice little trout. Then tomorrow we're going to make our way down that river and stay at a
high country hut tomorrow night and then we'll make our way out on Sunday. So yeah, we're looking
forward to it. I think the weather is meant to be clear and I think tomorrow and Sunday is meant to
be beautiful. So even though it's fresh, at least it's sunny out. So yeah, anyway looking forward to
it. Let's stop dilly-dallying and we'll start making our way across the plains. Man there is
something special about these high country plains. I absolutely love them hey. It's just
been this big open country. I think one of the best things about it is just there's no bloody
fences. It's so nice to look across this kind of landscape with not seeing a barbed wire fence.
Kind of makes you feel like you're back in the olden days before we started chopping up the
landscape into little parcels. All right so we've made it into the next little plain here.
Looks like we've got some brumbies down there as well. I'm just looking at my navigation app
just to see whereabouts I am and where I need to go to. For those who are interested, I use
Gaia GPS. There's lots of apps out there but I've been using Gaia GPS for like two or three years
now and absolutely love it. It's such a good app. I spend so much bloody time on it every single
week looking for new locations and when you're out in the field you can use it to track your
navigation. Also a little bit of a pug, I signed up to Gaia GPS through their affiliate program a
couple weeks back. So that way it gives you guys 20% off if you use the link in the description
below. It's about $50 Australian per year. I think it's like $35 US or something. So you use the link
they'll give you 20% off and if you spend as much time out in the bush as I do, it's money well
spent. I do not regret spending that $50. I get so much use out of this app. So anyway enough
of the pug. What we're going to do now is there's a little hill just behind me on that side and
another one on my right hand side. We're going to go through the saddle in between those hills
and put us into the next valley and then I think there's a trail that goes through that valley
that we'll link up with and that should take us over another mountain that will put us in the
valley that we want to camp at tonight. So yeah let's get on our way. Man look at all the little
mushrooms in this horse poo. Now if they're what I think they are, it might not be a bad idea to
take a couple of these back to camp for tonight. That could be a very interesting night.
Just kidding. Where am I? Far out. This place is so bloody beautiful
and I don't think I'll ever get sick of exploring the snowies. The fact that places like this where
you can just freely roam wherever you want and we are so bloody lucky. It's such a nice feeling
Absolutely love it. I kind of feel like John Dutton at the end of 1883 which is a prequel to
Yellowstone when he finally comes across Paradise Valley. This is my paradise valley. I could build
like a nice little timber hut up on one of these hills looking over this and I would be one happy
man. But it's about three o'clock so I'll go back two hours till it gets dark so what I'm going to
I'm actually not going to go that way. I'm going to save that for tomorrow. So tomorrow we'll fish
the river down that way and there's a hut I think about 5km down that way we'll stay at tomorrow
night. But for now we're going to go up river this way about 2km and we'll try and find a nice little
place to set up camp. Well we made it and man what a spot. How cool are all the granite boulders.
Yeah anyone who knows me knows I love my rocks so this place is uh yeah really cool. It's like a
Alright well I think this is going to be campsite for tonight. It's nice and flat. There's also
a dirt patch over here I should be able to have the fire. It's got a really nice outlook as well.
It's just starting to get pretty chilly now. Alright so I ditched the gin and tonic for this
trip. I've actually got some red wine, some Cabernet Laurent. I think we'll go down pretty
well tonight with this cold weather. I've also got some lamb chops as well so red wine and lamb chops
sounds pretty good to me. My hands are frozen. The fire is good. Alright about time to get some
dinner on. So I'm just going to cook up some lamb chops. I'm going to make a sauce which I haven't
actually made before but it's got some Dijon mustard, some red wine, some garlic and some
thyme in it so it sounds pretty tasty. And it's got some broccolini and some potatoes which I've
pre-cooked coming at you so they're actually cooked all the way through. I'm just going to
dice them up and chuck them in the pan with some butter, some garlic and some lemon and they're
really tasty. Yep very keen for this so let's get on the fire. So we just fry up this potato,
chuck in some garlic, a nice healthy amount of butter. Oh man I wish you guys could smell these
potatoes. They smell so bloody delicious. Lastly we just put potatoes in. I'm just going to add some
lemon. Gives it a nice zest. Alright now for the sauce. Just going to add some garlic.
I'm just going to add some thyme and some Dijon mustard and then just some red wine.
I'll just reduce that down so it thickens up a bit. I'm just going to add the lamb back in just
to heat back up and coat it in the sauce. Alright let's see how this tastes. Now like I said I've
never actually made this sauce before so it could either be hit or miss. It's actually not too bad.
I think I put a little bit too much red wine in but man that's actually quite nice.
Let's see how this potato tastes. Oh man they are the best potatoes. Oh they're so bloody delicious.
Just butter, garlic and lemon on it and I never would have thought to put lemon on potatoes but
man that zestiness is just so nice. Oh man you guys have to try those potatoes. They are so good.
Alright well I'm gonna eat this in peace and yeah I'll catch you guys in the morning.
What a beautiful morning. That was a gorgeous sunrise to wake up to. Just sitting up here on
this little hill just watching the sunlight sort of move across the ridges and then across the
plains and lighting up all the rocky boulders. It's absolutely stunning. It is so nice. There's
such a beautiful stillness. Just breathing that fresh morning mountain air in. It just feels so
good in the lungs. But it's probably about time to get some break in to me. I'm getting pretty hungry.
Alright well it's about 10 to 9 so I'm just gonna start getting camped or packed down. Then we'll
grab the fly rod and we'll go down to the bottom of these hills here where the creek's running
through and see if we have any lock down there. Then after that we'll start making our way down
the creek. It's about six and a half k's to the hut that I want to stay at tonight. So I've got
to make sure I sort of leave myself enough time to actually get to the hut as well as fish the creek.
So yeah anyway first things first is we'll get there camp back down. Man what a pretty spot to
fish. I absolutely love these granite boulders. I'm not really having much luck. Now I've never fished
this catchment here so I'm hoping there's trout this far up. I'm pretty high up in the catchment
area where the creek starts. Well that's pretty interesting. So this section of the river for
about 100 meters or so is obstructed with all these granite boulders. So I wonder if that's
sort of inhibiting the fish from going further upstream. Maybe that's why I didn't have any lock.
Well I don't think you guys will be able to see because I don't have a polarizing filter on but
there is a big trout just down there. If you look over here you guys might be able to see it but
just hugging the bank just down there there's some small trout. There's actually heaps of them.
So I think I was right. I think those rocks are sort of inhibiting the fish from going
further upstream. Oh man how good is that. Man there are so many fish here. There's a few small
ones but I really want this big guy just here so hopefully he takes it. Oh no I caught a branch
behind me. Bloody hell. Yes we're on. We are on. Oh no he's off. Damn it I was trying to get my net.
There's only a small one. Hopefully that hasn't spooked the other ones. There's some really good
size ones in here but there's so many small ones it's hard to try and get the big ones to eat.
Or eat it first at least. Come on, come on, come on, come on. Yes, yes we're on. Oh damn it.
Oh lost another one. Bloody hell. All right I saw some fish down here so let's see how we go.
Let's try not to spook them. When the water's this clear you gotta be so sneaky.
Oh damn it. Damn it. Well I just saw two really good size fish in here
but they swam away pretty quick so they might have seen me. Man it's so hard to walk this river.
I'm trying to stay high so they can't see me but man they always seem to catch a glimpse.
I don't know if you guys just saw that. There's a fish just down there in between this pool
and this pool in between the current. He's just waiting to ambush so I might try and get him.
Oh yes finally got one. There we go. Just a small one. Come here mate. Nice little rainbow.
Looks like it. There you go. Nice little rainbow. Well at least we got one on the
tally board but not quite the size we're after. I'm just crouching down to try and
hide my shadow because the sun's... Oh yes we're on. Oh yes nice. Come on.
Oh no. Where is he? Oh yes come on, come on. Do not lose him, do not lose him.
Yes. Oh you beauty. Very nice. Beautiful little brown. He's over leg length so I
think he might be dinner for tonight. It's probably a good size. Beautiful. Thanks mate.
Well there we go. Beautiful brown trout. I am so stoked with that. So tricky fishing today.
The water's really clear and because I'm walking downstream they just keep spotting me. I try and
go out wide and that's what I did with this guy. I came out really wide and came out behind him and
luckily he didn't see me but I've scared away so many fish today. This place is full of fish.
Like I just keep seeing them everywhere but I just could not seem to get one so I'm so stoked
to finally get one. This is going to be a really nice dinner. But it's about, it's about 1.30 now
so it's probably about time we start yeah hightailing it towards the hut. We've still got
about 5k walk or something to go so we'll try and smash that out and then once we get further
downstream might go for a bit of a fish a bit later. Man I'm pretty buggered eh. It's been a bit of a
slog to get here but I'm just about two kilometers away from the hut. Basically I just got to cross
this open plain to the treeline and that's where the hut is. I'm right beside the river now so what
I might do, I might have a quick cast. It's about three o'clock so I've only got about two hours
till it gets dark and that sun's already getting pretty low on the horizon. So I might have a quick
cast while I'm here and then we'll make our way up to the hut. Yes ah damn it. Miss. Had too much slack
of line. Ah bugger. I think it was a good size. Yes we're on. We're on. Come on. Where is he?
Is he still on? Yep. Let's not lose him. Oh he's a nice one. A really nice one. Beautiful rainbow.
Oh really nice rainbow. Yes there we go. Oh what a gorgeous rainbow.
Wow look at the color in him. Man that is a beautiful rainbow. That is absolutely stunning.
The colors in that. All the pinks on the cheek. Wow. All right let's let him go. Oh that was a
beautiful little rainbow. Glad to get that one on the tally board as well. Man there's some really
nice fish in this river. I wish I had more time to fish it. I probably have to start making my way
up to the hut pretty soon. I'm already starting to run out of time but maybe just yeah a few more casts.
Yes ah ah damn it damn it.
I am knackered. This has been a big day. It's actually been a big two days. I am so buggered
but it feels so nice to finally get to this high country beauty. She is an absolute cracker.
She's a really nice hut. Oh man I'm exhausted. Um it's about 20 to 5 so yeah I've only got about
20 minutes until sunset. So how about we go inside have a look around and we'll get the
the fire um yeah the fire going pretty soon. We'll also set up the tent out here because
just know with these high country huts you are allowed to visit them and cook up inside them and
have a fire inside but you're not allowed to use them for accommodation unless it's an emergency.
You have to use a tent outside so yeah let's go take a look inside. So there's room number one
we've got room number two and then here's the main living room. So let's open up this door
so we can get some light in. Well it looks like something's been nibbling the guest book.
How cool is that? These things are always so fun to read. There's usually some pretty
interesting stuff in here. Gosh remember those S's? I used to always draw them in school.
Anyway man that is such a cool hut. I would love to buy a property one day and build something
exactly the same as that. I just love this kind of shape. Such a quintessential Australian cottage.
It's so cool. All right time to get the tent set up.
That is looking mighty delicious. Well just a pretty simple dinner for tonight but man
you cannot beat freshly caught brown trout. It looks delicious. Yeah it's so good.
Well my water bottle and filter are frozen. There's ice all up around there and inside there as well.
I don't think you're meant to let these freeze either. I'm pretty sure it wrecks a membrane so
whoops. Well a pretty frosty morning to wake up to. It was really cool hey. Woke up to a winter
wonderland. The tent man it's like sleeping in an ice box. Had a pretty nice sleep though.
Although I had to wake up like four o'clock to go to the toilet and that wasn't much fun.
Oh man the stars last night. Bloody hell they were absolutely amazing. Like stars from horizon
to horizon and the whole Milky Way was just beaming. It was so beautiful. I was like standing
outside the tent for like 20 minutes before I went to bed just staring up at it all. Man you can just
get lost in your own thoughts when you're staring at the Milky Way. You really start to question
your place in the universe. I don't know if you guys can see that but the water inside my bottle
is frozen. It must have been very cold last night. All right before we go I just want to quickly
read to you guys a little quote that I wrote in the book that I always think of when I sort of
come out to these kinds of places. Here is your country. Cherish these natural wonders. Cherish
the natural resources. Cherish the history and the romance as a sacred heritage for your children
and your children's children. Do not let selfish men or greedy interests skin your country of its
beauty, its riches or its romance. Theodore Roosevelt. Spot on mate. Spot on. All right I
think it's time to get on out of here. Well it is another gorgeous day out here today.
Beautiful and sunny. I kind of wish I didn't have to leave. I'd love to do a bit more fishing today.
I feel like yesterday I spent or kind of wasted most of my time fishing that
upper section of the creek where it was really skinny stuff and quite difficult to fish.
Whereas by the time I got down to the good section it was like 3 30 in the arvo so not ideal.
And I'd love to try and fish this morning but I'm just running out of time. It's already quarter
past 10 so I'm behind schedule already. Probably got about maybe a two hour walk back to the car
and then about a 60 hour drive home so yeah gotta get a bit of a move on. All right legends well I
think that's a wrap for this weekend. I've got about a day and a half till I get back to the car.
Man what a fun weekend. I have absolutely loved today. It has been such a fun trip. I think this
will be up there with one of the best trips I've done I reckon. The scenery, walking through those
grassy plains, granite boulders, fishing rivers full of trout and the weather. Bloody hell you
couldn't ask for it to be better. It is so bloody nice. I've had so much fun. So I hope you guys
enjoyed this video as well. As always I want to say a big thanks to all you guys watching and also
a massive shout out to all you guys who subscribed. I cracked that 100 000 subscribe mark last week and
honestly from the bottom of my heart I cannot thank you guys enough. It still blows my mind
there's that many of you guys who enjoy watching these videos and also a massive shout out to all
my Patreon supporters as well because it really is with your support that helps me to get out here
and make more of these videos for you guys because it's bloody a lot of work to make one of these
videos. A lot of editing as well but this is a labour of love and I love doing it but yeah
your donations really help to fund these trips. So anyway that's enough of me rambling.
As always much love to all you guys and I'll see you guys in the next one.
