BROCCOLI DISASTER / EMMA'S ALLOTMENT DIARIES

Morning guys, welcome to my allotment diaries. My name is Emma. Normally I would do a bit more of a intro here but I've had a few emergencies this morning and I think it's because I thought I would just get away with it to be honest but we've had, well this has happened again, more snow and this time it's a lot deeper and I'm not sure many things have actually survived especially my broccoli. So this doesn't look good does it? This does not look good. Oh my god we seem to have had a great big snowfall right on that so I'm gonna have to sort that out now. I'm just gonna have to whack you here because this is obviously an emergency and I've just got to get on with it so. I don't know if it's all dead or not bloody hell. I don't know if it survived or not what do you think? It's all wilting but then it does that a lot. I think it's just if anything snapped. Right that one's not snapped. Little one's all right. Is this one snapped? No. This one here looks like it might have suffered a bit. I don't know if they've snapped. They're all wilting now. Bloody snow. That was supposed to keep out the pigeons and obviously it's just allowed all the snow to pile on top and the reason I came today is because I've seen this a lot on Instagram. I've seen pictures of people's broccoli being destroyed so I thought I'd come down and check my own. I don't know I'll pick some more today and see if it's all right. Oh god. Anyway this is just the first problem I've had. Second problem broad beans. I thought these things were indestructible apparently. They're bloody not indestructible are they? You can kill them and I think I've killed them. If you remember I uncovered them because I got cocky and I thought oh it's all going to be all right and we've had this snowfall. They're bloody dead aren't they? They're bloody dead. They're all dead. What I do is I try and clear the snow around them and see if they're savable but to be honest they all just look like they've just died. It's funny because the last snow they seemed all right and this snow they've like given up. They're like you didn't cover us and now we're going to die. Oh god. It's frozen isn't it? Come on. You can't die on my birthday guys. It's not fair. You can't die on my birthday. Come on. Breathe. Breathe. I think it's too bloody late. Do something. Let my little babies just die without fight you know. That's definitely too little too late I know. They're goners really but it's my birthday today and I don't want anything to die on my birthday you know. It's just the principle. I thought they were indestructible but I think that is just my youth naivety talking. My lack of experience I think I should have covered them when you told me to because a lot of people told me to. Oh it might be all right. We just have to have faith people. My good friend a couple of plots down gave me some water irises to go in my pond and he left them here because obviously of Covid you just want to leave them at the top of the plot or whatever but they've just frozen together. So I don't know if they're going to be okay and my pond is frozen too. Completely frozen over and I thought I put them in my water basket thing and that's frozen too. Not the film frozen too I mean literally frozen. Look at this completely frozen. At least that's not going anywhere. I don't know if it's just a bad omen being here on my birthday. Maybe it's just a bad thing to do to be here on your birthday but my sweet peas look like they're sort of suffering as well. Actually maybe they just need a water. Why is everything just dying? Why is this happening today? Maybe they'll be all right with a little bit of h2o in them. Come on guys not you and all. Wow it is cold out there today. Everything's so frozen. Now the real reason I came today was to fiddle about in my shed. I had an idea for some storage up on here I saw someone do online so basically just to tell you what I'm going to do I'm just going to whack a long piece of wood up here put some screws in and hang my tools on it. I saw someone do it on Facebook and I thought it was genius. So I'm going to try and do that today. I just have to decide which wall it's going to go on. I think it's going to go on the one behind me. I thought this might just be able to be whacked on but actually I'm going to have to saw it which is like one of my least favorite jobs to do because I'm so bloody awful at it. So I'm just going to measure that across and make it a bit bigger than I need it for when I muck it up which I will. Gives me a bit of leeway then you know. Right this is my rusty saw. Let's chop it in half. Where's the bloody line gone? I just drew it. Ah there it is. Dart. Great start. Let's do it. Let's do it guys. No need to panic. No need to relax. Oh you know what I actually brought with me? I don't think it really bloody matters but I thought I'd do it look a bit more professional this time you know. I've got a little thingy thing you know where I am. See if it's straight or not. That's it. That's straight. There we go. I don't know if that helps with anything. I hate doing jobs that are really loud because I feel like everyone stops and listens and is like what's going on. It makes me feel really self-conscious. I didn't believe in work at all. Look what I've done. Look what I've done. It's like going up. How did I do that? Oh for god's sakes. Right take two. New nail. Let's give it another go. All right try and make it going straight this time. Sit in. Is it straight? No it's not bloody straight but we don't want it straight anyway. It don't bloody matter if it's straight or not does it? Where's my screwdriver? Oh shit did I forget my ******* screwdriver. I forgot my ******* screwdriver. I forgot my screwdriver so I'm going to try and use a pair of scissors to screw something in which is not ideal but a screwdriver is a device for screwing screws in so anything else will do the job I think. It's a bit harder but you make do. Okay when I get my screwdriver I'll screw it in a bit more but this is the idea. Let's see if it works. This is the idea. Look at that. Look at that. Right now if I just put some more along there and I could put another one sort of slightly lower down there and I could put another one over there when I get my shed sorted and then I just put these little screws in and hook it on and it's up out the floor up off the floor and out the way. Sorry for the door. Yes I think it's brilliant. Right obviously my shed needs a good old tidying before the spring but I thought if I get the storage solution sorted first then I can move on to tidying it and there's a somewhere for everything to go and I saw this little thing on Facebook and I'm so proud of myself. I think this is just brilliant. I'm chuffed with that. Brilliant. Right guys I'm gonna love you and leave you there. If you haven't guessed already it is my birthday today. So there we go. Just wanted to escape to the plot for a bit because life has been pretty hectic recently. I'm feeling pretty stressed at home. Next week's half term and I can't bloody wait.
