good morning everyone welcome back to my
alotment Diaries my name is Emma these
the allotment Diaries I am shooting on a
brand new camera today so it's all a bit
of an experiment I hope it looks okay um
I'm still getting to terms with it it is
the Sony V sunic one the Sony Zed V1 or
something like that and I'm just trying
it out making sure that it's all working
and stuff I'm walking to my alotment
plot today a slightly different way
because I want to check out these
compost um I want to check out other
people's compost heaps and how they've
uh constructed them in a few weeks time
I'm going to be um redoing all my
compost heap and making a proper compost
area and I really like the look of this
one here this is something like what I
want to create so you see how it's got
the petts and then sort of access I know
they're not using it right now um but
it's got like access to the compost
which I really like and look what
they've done in here see this is clever
reusing all of their old compost bags
around the edge to make it waterproof
and stuff I quite like that idea always
looking for things to do with the Reus
bags always looking for ways of reusing
those bags and this is just a really
clever idea so this is something like
what I want to create and I think I need
at least two I think that's right I
think I need at least two compost Bays I
think that's the idea of it what I don't
want to do is create boxes again um like
what this one's like here these ones are
more boxy but it's really difficult to
get to your compost to turn it and to
get it out again so I want to I want to
move away from making it like a box and
make it more open anyway I thought we'd
walk around this way today and see some
of the plots that I don't normally show
you see what they're looking like it is
quite a shame to see quite a few plots
still looking like this at this time of
year which means that nobody's been here
nobody's used it all year what a shame
you know what a shame there's so many
people on the way to
list anyway let's take a look
[Music]
around so can I just say that this
structure here that somebody has built
on their plot is absolutely epic and
honestly it's my dream it's my dream to
have a structure that looks a little bit
like this I don't know how they've made
it gosh it's just stunning look at this
you could live here they got the Bold
doors on it gosh it's better than our
house you know that's better than our
kitchen setup cuz you can actually
access the garden from here so they've
got like this beautiful rustic table out
here if I move back just look at that
for an allotment plot structure isn't
that insane it's so beautiful I can just
imagine sitting out there in the summer
with some strawberries oh my
goodness and you have to excuse this bit
because as it's a new camera I
completely forgot how to hit record and
I didn't record record the next bit but
the first job I want to get on with at
the allotment plot today is clearing
some of the archways and then mulching
over the
[Music]
beds I didn't think about that I didn't
think about all the rain on the top
coming down
great that's going to be fun
[Music]
[Music]
it's going to go it's going to go can
you see this look it's going to go it's
going to
go oh my
God I just literally watched and
witnessed that branch fall down oh my
goodness
look I heard what I thought was a
squirrel it was not a squirrel it was a
branch it's literally fallen down oh my
goodness that's absolutely crazy I've
never actually witnessed a tree falling
down before I was like what is that
cracking
sound it was this look at that the whole
branch has just come down just goes to
show how badly these trees on the
allotment plot are actually looked after
because if it's on your site the council
don't class it as like their problem
it's your problem so if you've taken on
an allotment plot and it has a tree on
it it's technically your problem they
won't just come around and assess it and
do it for you if you think it's
dangerous and there's a problem with it
it's up to you to come and deal with it
which obviously leads to situations like
this I hope that's not damaged their
shed I don't think it has no it's just
missed a shed she got lucky with the
shed she got very very lucky didn't
quite hit the shed but look at this is
just completely
snapped tell you what people laughed at
me when I wore a bike helmet to deal
with the tree Who's laughing now
huh I'm not getting hit on the head with
a branch I'd rather look like a Wally in
a bike helmet than get hit by a blooming
tree thank you very much right we're
making progress it's very slow and
steady but I'm going to keep going
[Music]
right I think I'm going to go and get
some manure to fill in one or two of
those beds um and I'll bring you with me
because it's a very exciting journey and
I'd hope for you to miss out on that so
we're going to go get some horse poo
dump it on the bed and then dump a
couple of bags over what is that is that
a bus in here no okay right let's go
[Music]
right so I have left some of the Noster
in because they do still look new I've
left this little borage in can't believe
we still got borage growing in October
crazy I've mulched over this with some
manure as you can see left a lot of Ani
in this one and mulched over this with
some manure think I'm going to leave the
manure just sit for a bit now it's going
to have to sit for at least 6 months
because it's fresh manure so it needs to
rot down otherwise it will burn the
roots of any crops I put in there um
especially little baby ones and I
certainly wouldn't be able to plant any
seedlings in there for at least 6 months
so it's going to have to sit there I
think I'm going to leave it just as
manure for a little bit and let the rain
come down and let it sort rot on its own
and then I'll start topping it up with
some compost and stuff later yeah that's
what I think I'll do not seeing Einstein
guys but I am a little bit worried about
that tree over there now that just looks
very very wonky to me it seems to been
getting wonkier and wonkier every year
um and I'm really worried that that's
just one day going to go Timber what are
they y Timbo timber
timber yeah okay maybe don't yell that
out now but
yeah right we're going to move on and do
the other Archway but before then I do
actually have some sad news some sad
news about the potatoes or actually it
it's starting to rain hopefully we'll be
able to move on to the next Archway but
just in case let me quickly show you
what's happened to my precious just
potatoes because it's not good news when
is it ever good news at the moment I
know where's Einstein where is Einstein
what I need him right potatoes I'm not
sure it was Frost damage because if I
take this open and I've been putting
this
off now
this now this looks like blight to me oh
my gosh or is it frost damage that's
just really bad Frost damage these are
dead I am gutted these are absolutely
gone I don't know if it's blight because
I can't see anything on the stems but
whatever it is oh yeah there is some on
a stem there is this is blight all of my
lovely Maris Pier
potatoes gone I'd like to say I'd like
to sit here now and say you win some you
lose some but I feel like I've lost more
than I've won this year so I'm not going
to say that I'm going to say damn it um
because that is really really
frustrating and annoying and I cannot
believe I've lost all of those
potatoes I'm just devastated
[Music]
oh
[Music]
so I did sort of manage to clear the
archway um before the rain came I
thought I'd just give it a go doesn't
that looks sad oh my
goodness oh what a sad and sorry sight
it really does feel like Autumn now now
that all of this has gone and I don't
even feel like it really got growing
this year right until the end like it's
literally the last two week weeks where
it's Heyday you know and now it's gone
you live and you learn next year I'm
going to work really hard in this
Archway and maybe try growing something
other than pumpkins I think pumpkins
always very successful on the other plot
so I'm going to stick with them on that
plot I think and I'm going to try peas
up here sweet peas peas oh sweet peas
would be lovely wouldn't they imagine
walking under sweet peas yeah we're
going to try something new you always
have to mix it up every year and try
something new it keeps it exciting this
has already been mulched over with some
lovely manure so what I'm going to do is
dump a big bag of uh what should I dump
on it top soil and compost I think let's
do both
[Music]
[Music]
[Music]
[Music]
at the rake
[Music]
oh right so I put the top soil on top I
sort of thought the clue might be in the
somehow top soil on the top I've never
used it before so we've now got horse
manure comp multi-purpose compost and
top soil on the top and that is sort of
what it looks like so a lot of people
told me last year that I should start
using other things like top soil and um
different types of compost and stuff
just to enrich it so that's exactly what
I'm doing very very interested to see
the results of this and just see how
well my stuff grows using top soil as
well let me know if you've ever used top
soil soil in your allotment plot um it
does say it's sort of for lawn sort for
when you're laying lawn down but it also
does say planting and borders so it's
got picture of someone laying lawn it
does say planting and borders as well so
I don't know we've put it down now it's
too late I can't take it back off again
so hopefully it will work
Einstein he's in there somewhere he's
not cooperating today guys I'm sorry
[Music]
right well I hope you've enjoyed my
little Friday allotment Vlog it's a
little bit shorter today just because or
it might not be I always say that and
it's not I'm just trying out this new
camera and I will get home and edit and
