Hollywood is decorated with a series of murals that take as their subject the movie industry. At the southeast corner of Hollywood Boulevard and Wilcox Avenue is a wall-sized tinsel town mural. This one, the work of Tom Saraya from 1983, is called You Are the Star and depicts a variety of famous Hollywood actors of decades past as an audience at the movies. Los Angeles may well be the city of dreams. Home to Hollywood and major film and television production studios, it conjures celluloid fantasies daily. The unique 1950s round Capitol Records tower was designed to look like a stack of 45's vinyl records, the media of the day. Besides sun, surf, and hills, the iconic image of Los Angeles is without a doubt the palm tree. In most cities, buildings make the skyline. Paris has the Eiffel Tower, London Big Ben, and New York the Statue of Liberty. Only Los Angeles signed the sky with trees. Tens of thousands of palms tower over the city like flagpoles, the arching trunks and rustling fronds marking the progression of the California dream. The Church of the Blessed Sacrament has stood on Sunset Boulevard for over 100 years. A historically protected building, today's Italian Renaissance church was completed in 1928 and is considered one of the most beautiful churches in Los Angeles. A continual study in contrast, LA's homes reflect the dreams of the people who live in them. From palatial mansions, to the Spanish Revival, to bungalows ensconced in the hillsides, LA offers every type of dwelling imaginable. A visitor can take in the city's quiet atmosphere by driving through its residential streets, checking out the houses. The Art Deco-style Griffith Park Observatory commands incredible views over downtown Los Angeles, Hollywood, and the Pacific Ocean.
