Hi everyone! Something a little different from me today. I thought I would show you the progress on our dormer loft extension for our Victorian terrace house in London. I hope it might explain my absence from YouTube and from the allotment plot! Hope to be back there soon. Let me know any other video requests in the comments below. Thanks! Emma x
Good morning everyone, welcome to my very dark, dingy, autumn day house. My house is
dark anyway because it's like a terraced house so in the autumn, winter time it just like
turns into like a dungeon really. So today I'm going to do a little bit of a different
video. I'm going to do a little house tour, a little renovation update. Whenever I ask
you guys what kind of videos you want to see, yeah whenever I ask you loads of people always
say they want to see more of my actual life and like a home tour or like just other aspects
of my life so I thought as the allotment is kind of, the work on it is drying up a little
bit and I can't get there as much as I was getting because of this, I'll explain in a
minute. I thought I would do a little update tour because this is the reason why I've not
actually been at the allotment as much as I would like to. So a little bit of a background
on the house. We bought this house a year ago, it's a Victorian terrace, it needed absolutely
everything doing to it because it was just £50,000 under asking price. I mean that tells
you pretty much everything about the state it was in. Most of what we've done so far
has been kind of like aesthetic, so like making it look nicer so we can kind of live in it.
At the moment we're getting a renovation, we're getting a loft conversion done and we've
had a bedroom added upstairs which is very architecturally confusing but I'm going to
show you. Now the house is in absolute state. This is my hallway at the moment. It's full
of building materials. We've got some doors come, these are fireproof doors which we need
for building regs. And then this I have absolutely no idea. Loads of wood and stuff. And then
in here, this is what I've been living in guys. This is our back room, it's our dining
room. We've got like floor over there which is like the floor for the loft and then toys.
I've got clothes all over the piano because we have no room for a chest of drawers or
a wardrobe at the moment because we're all living in one room. Oh, I didn't get the banana
bread out. Excuse me one moment. Welcome to my life guys. This is my home life. It's beautiful.
It's made a bit of Saturday morning banana bread. Looks pretty good. It hasn't risen
as much as I thought it would. I think I've probably forgotten to add the baking powder
but it smells pretty nice. So let's move on. Right, I'm going to take you upstairs and
show you what we've done. So here are our stairs. I'm definitely going to have a runner
up the middle, keep them painted. It's so dark guys. I don't know what to do about it
to be honest. It's just one of those days. But it's always this dark so I'll just carry
on. We've had the plastering done now so it all looks a little bit better. So when you
come up the stairs, if you go straight left, this is going to be Alice's bedroom. At the
moment, it's where we are all living. Look at this. Look at this. So this is the kids
rooms and our rooms all packed away into boxes. That's the only chest of drawers I have. The
kids have been raiding it this morning. Tommy sleeps down there on a mattress. Alice is
sleeping down there on a mattress. That's Dave's work stuff. This is all the kids toys.
More toys down here. A random radiator needs to be fitted and our bed. This is what I have
been living in for the past three and a half weeks I think. It's just been a bloody nightmare
to be honest. But we are one week away from completion and then everyone can go back to
their own bloody bedrooms. Right, this is what we've changed. So you come up the stairs
and now instead of this whole thing used to be a bedroom, so the door to the bedroom used
to be here and then all that was a bedroom. We've now split it up so I'll show you. You
come down here. There's our stairs and this is our new corridor. I don't know how good
this filming is going to be to be honest. This was my idea. So originally this was going
to be a wall. So this is going to be a separate corridor but obviously it's very very dark.
So I sort of found this idea on George Clark's Channel 4 thing where he put these beams in
instead of a wall to let a little bit of light through. So these are going to continue all
the way down to there obviously. Don't want any of my kids falling down. Talking of falling
down a hole, we've still got the chimney chute here. I think it's called a chimney chute
or is it a flute? A flue? I don't know. Anyway, this all needs to be filled in obviously.
And this is going to be Tommy's bedroom. So it's not massive. It's not a massive bedroom
but I think because we've kept the original Victorian sash window in here which is massive,
the whole bedroom is really bright and it actually feels bigger than it is. So we took
the chimney out. This used to be a chimney here and it came right out. It was a really
big bulky chimney. So we've taken that out, put a steel beam above obviously, filled it
in and this is going to be Tommy's bedroom. So there's his door. That will all be filled
in. We're going to sand and paint the floorboards I think and have a nice big comfy rug down.
Then over here he'll have his desk and some toy storage there, maybe some shelves. I don't
know. And then his bed. Gosh, I'm spinning you everywhere. His bed's going to go over
here in this corner because that's where the radiator's going to go I think over here somewhere
and a nice chest of drawers. You can't see a bloody thing. I don't know where I'm hanging
the camera everywhere but that is Tommy's bedroom. You come down this corridor here
which is very dark. We're going to have spotlights. So we've got all the things ready for spotlights
to come in here. I'm going to paint it white and put a mirror up. You probably can't see
me at the moment. Down there is going to be the bathroom. It's nowhere near done yet and
we're not doing that yet because we can't afford it. And then this is the locker room
Oh my god, I can't do it. It doesn't bloody work. Oh, there we go. Right, it does work.
We've got a sliding door to save space and this is just so that the door doesn't... I
can't open it now. I'm stuck. It obviously needs a handle. There we go. And that's just
to save space. I absolutely love the way it hides into the wall. I think it's amazing
anyway. Little things, eh? So, come up. Welcome to my new bedroom. We've never had a bedroom
before, Dave and I. That's nice, that's ours because we've always rented. And our bedroom
has always been like a storage room or something. I don't know if yours is like... It was just
like a dumping ground where we put stuff and occasionally slept in. But now that we've
got a proper room, massive up here, it's beautiful. So we've gone for the dormer loft
to give us a little bit more room and it wasn't that much more expensive. We've got this massive,
massive window in which lets lots of light in and we can see the train tracks. So you
get a nice view of the trains going by in the morning, which is just lovely. And then
I'll show you around. This is our new lovely big dormer loft. So we're going to have obviously
railings the whole way around, like a banister around there like that, keeping it all open.
It's all going to be one big room. And then I'll have the bed over here, I think, where
all this junk is. And then Dave's going to have a little office area over there. It's
actually bigger than you think it is. So if I scoot over here... Oh my God, what is that?
Yeah, you can see it's quite big. It's not that small. So I have a little desk there,
a few shelves, plants. I'm sure I will plant it out up here because it's really big and
bright. We've got two dormer windows, which are... I can't bloody open them. There you
go. But yeah, I'm opening it from the wrong side. Such a twat. Of course you don't open
it there, you open it there. There we go. That's a view of the scaffolding. Very nice.
Very nice. See lots of rooftops. Can't say it's the fanciest view, but which is nice
to have some more light up here, I suppose. Oh dear. Right, so yeah, up here I'll have
the bed over there. And then against this wall here, we will have wardrobes, maybe a
dressing table, have some nice curtains to go down to the floor. Thought it'd be really
nice. And then again, in here we're going to have spotlights as well. So this is why
my life has been a little bit crazy because we've just literally been getting this work
done for like since July. Because of coronavirus, everything's been delayed and it's not the
orders that are delayed, it's like all the things. So the supplies and the materials
and the lorry people and lorry people, you know what I mean? And that's the reason it's
all just been like the window was like two weeks late because the window company couldn't
deliver it or something. And the plaster was like two weeks behind because he couldn't
get his hands in any plaster or something. So it's just like, it's all just been a little
bit up in the air. And that's why I've sort of been not vlogging as much as I wanted to
because there's just been so much going on here. I will show you quickly the garden.
I did mow the lawn. You can't see it from up here. Let me show you downstairs actually.
Hang on. Right, back in Tommy's room now. So you can sort of see the garden a bit better
from here. So I've got this weird construction over the lawn. Hang on a second, it'll focus.
There we are. So I put the football goal over there because I've actually sown some more
seeds and the birds kept eating it. So I've got that over there. And then I don't know
if you can see, I've got trellis and I've got like the white fences at the back. I haven't
really got any plants in yet. The point is the garden is kind of ready to like plant
up in the spring and like the bulk of it, like the structure of it is done. And I'm
quite proud of it because I sort of came up with it all myself and like designed it all
which was really fun. So I hope you enjoyed this little video. I hope it's given you a
little update as to why I haven't been at the plot as much as I have. Like I said, it
should be done within a week and then I can get decorating and we can move into our own
rooms again and I can get my house back because it's just been really, really difficult actually
not having our own bedroom and stuff and everything's everywhere. And it's all very stressful and
anxiety ridden, but it's going to get done and it'll be amazing. So I hope you enjoyed
the vlog. Let me know any other kinds of videos you'd like to see. I am going to get back
to the plot again this week so I'll have another allotment diary up for you and hopefully I
might start doing some cooking videos because to show you what I'm doing with the produce
that I'm growing at the plot, I thought that might be quite a nice little time. But let
me know, like I said. I hope you had a nice weekend. I will see you next time. Thanks
for watching.
