Naomi Osaka vs. Iga Swiatek _ 2022 Miami Final _ WTA Match Highlights
Tails or heads?
All right, heads it is.
Sir?
Photos, girls.
Osaka hit through the Svantek backhand
and broke down that corner
really well.
And Svantek tried to beat her
with width and depth
but couldn't do it.
And she makes no mistake.
Especially on the court, close to
90 degrees Fahrenheit.
Had to play that ball
a couple of times, they're just coming back.
I mean, the speed
again, and the
defense of Svantek
is ridiculous. Most people, including
myself, thought that that ball was not going to
go over.
Great kick serve.
You're looking at me funny, but now you're going to use it.
You're going to think about this in your next match.
What about going over the lower
part of the net?
You won't have to deal with that.
Stay put, and put it past Svantek.
Great recovery.
So early in that rally from
Svantek.
Trigger the return.
Yeah, same thing.
But down the line, it's going to be more effective,
I think.
She kick it
just to get that first serve in out wide.
She did.
First serve in play, and a rip to forehand
for 4-2.
Because Svantek loves to really
counterattack a fast ball
on the serve, it seems.
Yeah, she doesn't mind pace.
Sat up invitingly,
but it was that shot she kept
very low, making Osaka hit up
on the volley.
Oh, that was a very big point, because
to get up to low 40,
completely different feel, obviously, to 15-30.
The thinking is, I have to hit
a winner against her, hit the ball harder,
because it is Svantek, and how well she moves
and counters.
I mean, it puts a lot of pressure on you,
because you know that she's going to get
to that next ball.
Has to be that good.
For Osaka,
for 18 on force right now,
and out of the 13 winners
off the ground, guess what?
There's seven aces.
Wasn't that just a great,
fascinating set to watch
between these two great champions?
And it goes
the way of Iga Svantek.
Takes the opening set.
Six games to four.
Effortlessly done on that forehand
side from Svantek.
Real venom in that forehand
drive volley.
Boom! Here goes one.
Let's put a little more on that one,
and you know what? I'm tired of this.
There you go.
Maybe that's what she's intent on doing, this second set.
Everything is about
the return right now.
She needs to break, obviously, to stay in this match,
but has been broken too many times
in Miami.
Well, there's a great one.
But she altered her stance there,
where she was standing.
She's recognizing that being so close doesn't work,
so she's waiting for it to come back
down from the kick.
Oh, how about that?
She's raising her level.
Not dropping
the list bit.
Still using the cross-court
short.
Big difference
in this set on the serve of Osaka.
Just breeze through
to her maiden Grand Slam title.
Great chase by Osaka,
but there was no missing that forehand.
She storms
to the Miami Open title
and becomes just the fourth woman
to complete the Sunshine Double.
And she's the first since Serena
nine years ago
to win three straight
WTA 1000s.
And it's a result
in this final that also extends
her winning streak to 17.
That smile really
does say it all.
Only four games
was Naomi Osaka
able to win in this match.
What a play
from Swiatek in the last three weeks.
Yeah, and this guy, this woman,
her physio right here,
they're all part of
this victory without any doubt.
And absolutely
amazing.
Absolutely incredible to see how
she's played, how she's
at 20, so
mature. Please welcome Naomi
Osaka.
We'll present the hand-cut
Bohemian Crystal Trophy from
Last Bit.
And we'll hear a few words from Naomi who
calls this tournament a home
tournament. And we'd love to hear a few
words from her.
Firstly,
thank you. I want to dedicate this
one to all the people that
support me and my fans. I know
I haven't been in this position for
a little minute.
Thank you.
This isn't the outcome that you guys wanted, but
I don't know. I'm having a lot of
fun up here, so I hope that
I can keep working hard and
get more opportunities to be in a situation
like this again.
I want to congratulate
Iga. Hi!
I was just
thinking yesterday about
just like when I had that dinner
with you in Australia, and just watching
your journey is really incredible.
And I hope you continue having
fun. And apparently we're tied
1-1 now, so...
Your team as well, you're a really
incredible, amazing person.
And I hope that you guys
keep going forward. So congratulations.
Selfish and take up some more time,
I want to thank my team.
They're the ones that keep pushing
me forward after
the things that happened like
two weeks ago.
They're kind of like the rock that stays by
my side, and just thank you guys
so much. I know that this isn't the outcome you
wanted as well, but
just to be in a final again, it means
a lot to me, so thank you guys.
Oh, there's
also another last one. Thank you to
the ball crew. I don't know how you guys
run around sweating so much, but
it's really hot in Miami, so I hope
you guys drink a lot of water. Thank you
to the tournament. This place
is amazing, and
thank you to everyone that came today.
So, I wish that
I could have given you a more exciting match,
but you guys made the atmosphere really
incredible, and thank you.
And yeah, I hope
I can see you guys next year. Thank you!
Alright, let's hear it one more time
for your finalist,
Naomi Osaka.
Ricardo will present
Iga with the
Butch Buchholz Trophy.
Iga Svantec becomes only
the fourth woman in history to win the
Sunshine Double, and the first woman ever
to win the first three
1,000 tournaments of the year, so let's
hear from your champion.
First of all, I wanted
to say that I'm pretty glad
that we could play this match, and
I think it's the start of a great
rivalry, and honestly, when I was
watching you winning US Open
in 2018, you know, I wouldn't
even thought that I'm going to be playing against you
on such an important match. You are really
an inspiration, and this sport is better with you, so
keep going.
And as you said, we have
1-1 now, so
play more matches to come. But
yeah, I want to thank the tournament
for making this event possible,
the sponsor, Itau, and
everybody who, you know,
as Naomi said, was sweating so much
to make this happen in this weather,
and yeah, I mean, it's a great
event, especially the fans right now,
comparing to last year.
This tournament has so much energy that
really, you guys,
especially Polish fans,
you really kept me going this week, so thank you.
I also want to thank my team.
I'm really sad that I missed you crying
because I was sitting right there, but
I hope you're going to cry again.
And
my dad, my sister,
my whole family, who I know
have been watching, hopefully they're going to
join me soon and finally
travel a little bit, because
yeah, I want
them here also having these moments with me.
My sponsors,
basically, and
for their help and
for, you know, keeping
it cool.
I'm really glad that
well, hopefully, when I'm going to have
if I'm going to have the next speech like that,
the situation
is going to get better, but I want to
as I was doing that
in my previous speeches in Doha and
in the annuals, say
to Ukraine to stay strong
and yeah.
