And welcome to South Carolina's capital city
on a Saturday afternoon.
The Arkansas Razorbacks are in town
as the Hawks come calling against South Carolina
in this critical SEC showdown.
Good crowd on handoff.
Howard and Lucas Santos.
Josh Gray and Makai Mitchell.
The opening tap, Arkansas stole it,
and the Hawks have possession first
on this Saturday afternoon.
Here's Anthony Black.
Ricky Council IV, boys, putting up numbers
in bunches this season, the Wichita State transfer.
Mark, this is your and I's first chance
to be able to see Arkansas in person.
We've seen a lot of South Carolina.
There's Council stop and pop with the bounce.
I think Ricky Council is as good as anybody in this league
at making tough shots.
Starting 5-4, Carolina.
Carter, Johnson, Hayden, Brown.
Josh Gray now starting as he has been inserted
into that lineup for head coach Lamont Parris.
Additional size and offensive rebounding ability.
First possession for the Gamecocks.
Shot clock down to five.
Mechie Johnson, the transfer from Ohio State.
Lobbed to Brown.
Should that ever touch the rim?
No matter, Arkansas.
Hawks still with a 2-0 advantage.
Kai Mitchell operating the post.
The Mitchell twins starting together
for just the fourth game this year.
And Mikkel, that's an air ball.
Mekhi, the rebound.
Had a good move inside. It's 4-0.
You think that was a little brotherly love there?
It felt like it.
As an undersized four-man.
Chico Carter, the bounce pass to Gray in traffic,
and he'll finish.
Boy, he has been so good lately in their last four games.
Actually, it's off the mark.
But, again, I think that's a shot
Lamont Parris can live with.
Lamont Parris may be the only coach in America
as Jackson nails a three
that says he wants his guys to get a lot of room
because he has such great positional size at 6'9".
You think he's a lottery pick?
It feels that way talking to people.
He's close.
He's somewhere in that 10 to 17 range.
Peyton Brown whistled for the personal.
His first, team's first.
You showed the graphic with the must button.
...in the show today,
but where do college players get better?
They get better in practice.
...on to play the Nuggets,
one of the top-scoring players in the NBA in his career
and in the 1980s in particular.
Five on the shot clock.
Meachie's got to go, and he does.
Was shoved, and free throw's coming.
Arkansas gets caught on a switch
with Mitchell out on Meachie Johnson.
...but attempts. Attempts.
One more coming for Johnson.
Coming in from Chattanooga,
longtime assistant at Wisconsin.
After a miss, this is really hard to do.
Walsh corrals it, and you can feel the chaos
on offense for Arkansas.
There's Devo Davis getting everybody organized.
Much better offense.
How about the ball move at that time?
Forget the chaos. That was crisp.
Hit in. I think that will happen.
Florida's win against Tennessee this past week,
obviously a big checkmark.
Josh Gray, another dunk.
He's got four now in the starting lineup.
Again, Josh Gray, you said this.
His confidence is growing almost possession by possession.
Passes deflected, too many bounces.
Fake a pass to make a pass.
House on the lob, and there is Jalen Graham.
...season.
He's got some talent to work with this year.
They've been close at times.
They haven't been close at others.
He's trying to build a program.
He's trying to build it the right way.
It's Brown inside. Connects.
Again, get in, come here this year,
is his vision for the program.
And, Roy, he had this similar vision at Chattanooga.
Remember, in his first two years in Chattanooga,
they won a total of 25 games.
Black forced that one up and in.
And drew the contact.
Not only did he draw the contact.
E.G. Jackson from their time together at Team USA.
Remember the ESPN 100 movement before the free throw.
And Black, make him pay.
Now, that was the old NBA two for one.
It was, did happen before my time, I'm proud to say.
Council with a nasty crossover.
Roy Black has been operational on the baseline.
Hawks by two.
Graham, the spin, bottled up by Davis.
Did not matter for 11.
Jalen Graham off the bench gives them such a lift.
Go reported this time of year.
Even so, that's a corner three,
and that's money by Debo Davis.
Again, Black's vision, his court awareness,
set all of that up.
Gray taps it up and in.
Another offensive rebound.
He's got six points.
He is so big at the glass.
Oh, what kind of dribble was that by Davis?
And then the dump off.
Graham, well, filed that one away right there.
Black fading away off glass.
Come on.
This arena versus what's happening
around the conference is just amazing.
No more home games.
Yeah, maybe so.
Gamecocks in a man-to-man.
Ricky Council, elbow J, and there it is.
That's way too easy.
That's just a little.
14-2 run now for the Hogs.
It's interesting that Arkansas
is a really good two-point scoring team.
We don't say that a lot in this day and age of analytics.
Jackson open for three, his second triple.
23.
Now Mechie Johnson.
Those spins for Doc, and a fresh 20.
Jackson thought about stepping into a three.
Instead, Walsh clipped him,
and a fist bump by Jackson.
Free throw's coming.
Lack of freshmen.
One of two at the strike for G.
Along the baseline.
And Mechie Johnson hit hard.
Kel Mitchell just picked up his second.
Career high 26.
The win at Rupp.
Coming up Monday night in the SEC.
As Johnson bangs home the second.
Vince Brown under the basket.
Brown forces the turnover and gives it right back.
And how about Devo Davis?
The no look, and the lob to Graham.
And finally claims it.
Ahead to council.
Against Jacoby Wright.
Off glass, no, and a blocking foul.
Comes in late.
But we don't like it.
Jalen Graham, eight points.
Come tournament time.
That's not a bad thing, being very conservative there.
Johnson baseline.
Outside to Jackson.
And a clean look. It goes in and out.
Josh Gray again.
He's got eight in the first half.
Brown against Black.
Brown lost it for a minute.
Was fouled going up.
Speaking of three percent at the strike.
And one more coming.
One of two at the line.
The rebound claimed by Devo.
Dix.
Lob to Graham.
And the spin move.
The jump hook is there.
He's got ten.
Walsh triple teamed all of a sudden.
Plenty of time on the shot clock.
Davis wanted the deep three.
Didn't pull the trigger.
Walsh with five to go.
And now Graham, perfect from the floor.
That'll continue.
Now, speak of Arkansas, played the best of any SEC team.
Despite the setback.
Gray's got ten.
He and Johnson on the block out.
Big possession now for the Gamecocks.
Johnson loses it.
Over to Gray. Up and in.
You think Meachie wants an assist on that?
Davis wants to shoot.
He can't get enough real estate.
This time does.
And the left-hander is short.
Walsh tracks it down.
Yeah, Davis was slow to the ball.
Graham against Gray.
No look to Walsh.
And with authority.
Carolina, would you go two for one here?
Sure, I would.
And Meachie Johnson will call a timeout.
Zachary Davis trying to get it into Brown with a clear path.
And Brown with a flush.
There you go.
Is that quick enough for you?
I think so.
Love the call.
Lead down to six and about a ten-second differential
between the clocks.
And a chance for the elusive two for one, Coach.
At some point, Black's got to step in closer to the arc
and be a threat as a shooter.
Walsh against Brown.
Skips it out to Davis.
And the three goes down for Devo.
Little gritty on the way back down as well for number four.
Shooting the ball with such confidence.
When he's still smiling after that release.
Shot clock is off.
Deep three.
Meachie Johnson.
No.
And the Hawks will take a nine-point lead.
Into the break.
Arkansas squad that's firmly in the dance right now,
but needs a win on the road to keep that in place.
And Anthony Black on the first possession
connects with a runner.
Roy, don't you feel like this is a huge opening segment?
More than the others right now on the defensive end.
Can Lamont-Pearce do anything different
to get Meachie Johnson going at some point in the second half?
On cue.
Yes is the answer.
Little pin down, weak side.
Carter off the pump fake.
Mid-range.
Yeah, Carter's got to shoot the three ball.
That's an unconfident play right there.
And that's what Lamont-Pearce told us about this morning.
Davis makes him pay on the other end.
And I tell you, after every shot he's made,
he's had something so far from behind the arc for Carolina.
Johnson to Gray.
Got to hurry.
Walsh tracks it down.
In transition, Jordan Walsh up and under.
No.
And Mitchell cleans it up.
In a relentless kind of way.
They now have their largest lead as a result of that tenacity.
Jacoby Wright, the leader.
I like that play a lot because he played off two feet.
Gray records his ninth rebound.
Jackson, full head of steam.
Gigi gets it back off the fake.
The spin.
Gray, somehow, someway.
He greets us with a smile, and he's got a wry sense of humor.
I asked him, hey, how's retirement treating you?
The dunk is there for Mikel Mitchell
and the lob out of the timeout.
And he's in.
Five and a half into the second.
Graham's been effective in this position.
Couple of big man moves.
In and out.
That's pretty good battle, really,
Graham and Bozeman's redonk.
Neither giving an inch.
Mechie wanted to get that shot off, couldn't do it.
Brown rejected, swatted by Mitchell.
And a foul was called.
Free throw's coming for Tinnen.
South Carolina School of Law.
Yeah, his class low.
Hayden Brown, one for two.
Rattles the second one in, lead down to ten.
Much better free throw shooter.
Just 63% on the year.
It's a 50% shooter from the field before this season.
His collegiate career.
Council, silky smooth.
Boy, just lulls you to sleep.
What is it about Arkansas?
Jimmy Wick?
Yes.
Do I remember that one correctly?
Yes, you titled him that.
Council's got eight, lead back to 12.
He averages 17 per game this year.
Deep three by Johnson.
Yes!
Big shot for Carolina.
Lead down to nine.
But it came from...
New material, I like it,
at this late hour in the season.
Graham baseline, double team.
Been bottled up so far in the second.
Not this time, right over Gray.
The question I want to ask is, when does Graham...
I would agree, they already got Kentucky
with Gray really not doing much that night.
G.G. Jackson can get it done.
49.
He's got nine to lead, it's nine.
Johnson, deep triple, down it goes.
Two possession game.
And off the fingertips of Gray.
Debo, between the legs.
Stop and pop, yes.
And a foul!
A draft.
Three the hard way for Debo Davis.
Johnson out of their motion.
Zed lays it up and in.
That was a play from the sideline that time.
Oh, Black lost his footing working against Johnson.
Foul was called by Mike...
Describe 70%, he'll get two as he makes the first.
For 23 on it.
Plenty of firepower, one of two, Jackson.
True five, man, I guess Graham is going to fit that mode.
We saw the Mitchell twins get the start back door.
Hayden Brown, 53-47.
Graham inside with authority.
Without going anywhere.
And Black tried to get it to Graham,
who wasn't looking.
Hayden Brown, yes.
Council, I thought that was going up.
This one is, that's Davis.
Boy, he answers the call time after time.
They are logging a lot of minutes.
The back nine for the Hogs.
How would you evaluate the schedule?
Tough, brutal.
You say that about a lot of teams
this year in the conference.
Shot clock at 10, Mechie wide open.
That's been his spot, and he remains red hot.
Time for that play.
Well, you can tell Johnson's feeling it.
Jacoby Wright with a path.
Swatted away and count the bucket.
Goaltending the call.
And on the drive by Jacoby Wright.
That's a goaltender.
Their defensive patience.
Well, you can feel more games like this
coming in league play.
Johnson, council swiped it from behind.
Johnson got it back.
Gray the pump fake.
Lost the block and a foul.
Gamecocks in the bonus.
Meanwhile, they've only committed three.
The road.
Gray couldn't finish at the stripe.
Couple of costly misses.
You miss two free throws.
That's like a turnover.
And a foul called.
Was that Gray?
Learned to win on the road and in close games.
Gamecocks have made six of their last seven.
Deep three. Johnson drays it.
Feeling it defensively.
Davis, that's a three.
Gray the rebound.
He lost it, and he was fouled.
And you can feel the emotion.
Run.
Make it nine-nothing, and we're tied.
And they reclaim the lead with 4-0-4 to play.
This pick and roll to let Devo Davis create.
This time it's black in.
Traffic in and out.
The block and the foul.
Late, you called their loss at Baylor.
Maybe the best performance by an SEC player yet, right?
He was playing as well as anybody.
Clutch free throws by the freshman from Duncanville.
I think right now Carolina has Arkansas
on its heels defensively.
Jackson, counsel on him,
and now Josh Gray, career night for 33.
That continues.
A force to be reckoned with down low.
See, that's what happens when Johnson makes threes.
He attracts all the defenders.
Gamecocks by one.
Approaching two to play.
Counsel up and under.
Puts it in. What a move.
So creative.
At the top of the show, I called him
the best shot creator in this league.
On display.
The Hawks with a field goal.
First time in a long time after those free throws by black.
Johnson to Brown. Double team.
The handoff.
Right now the Hawks have no answer.
Six consecutive lead changes in this one.
Black off glass.
Arkansas with the advantage and a timeout call.
March in Columbia.
Let's see if Meechie Johnson doesn't initiate the offense
and then get the ball back at some point in time.
And a foul called on G.G. Jackson.
That's set as a screener.
Watch this again.
Johnson goes and angles to his right
and he just rolls into the defender.
That's a good call.
A minute to play.
A one-point lead and the ball for the Hawks.
Black with a path.
Couldn't finish.
Gray corrals a rebound.
Numbers.
Quick trigger.
Johnson, no. Black clears.
And a two-and-a-half second differential between the clocks.
Yeah, you got a foul.
And Wright fouls Davis.
That's in these kinds of situations.
One and one. Missed it.
Wow.
Shot clock is off.
And Lamont Paris tells Meechie Johnson,
let's talk about it.
Shot clock is off.
And Cox will inbound it.
Meechie in the corner.
He's going to come to the ball.
I promise you.
Josh Gray.
Bounce pass to Brown.
No.
Two-and-a-half seconds to go.
And a foul called as Black ripped down the rebound
somehow, someway under the rim.
Black at 68%.
Money.
Missed it short.
Jackson, the rebound, and a quick timeout.
And Brown gets it to Josh Gray for the win.
No. Arkansas survives.
Wow.
There's no such thing as a bad road win.
So, for a team that was 0-5, it goes down to the wire.
I know this isn't the first, second, or third option.
Josh Gray.
Well, remember, Carolina didn't have any timeouts,
and Hayden Brown was running out of time.
I thought they were trying to isolate Jackson,
but he came too far up the floor
and kind of got lost in the shuffle.
And as a result, Arkansas survives.
First three-point attempt of the season for Gray.
Arkansas finds a way, their record now even in SEC play.
