Third-placed Union Berlin were looking to maintain their remarkable title bid against
their favourite Bundesliga opponents FC Köln, a side they'd never lost to in the top flight.
And they made a decent start too, with Kevin Behrens warming the hands of Marvin Schreiber
inside five minutes.
Union's pressing game almost paying early dividends.
But the first half's best moment fell the visitors' way.
They were looking to end an eight-game winless run on the road and hadn't scored in five
of the last six away.
But Dejan Ljubicic was a whisker away from giving them the lead in the 19th minute.
They closed out a tight opening 45 minutes with another effort, this time from Stefan
Tigges, which then gave way to a typical Union counter-attack.
Frederik Roenef's only real save of the first period, denying Köln's striker, before Geraldo
Becker used his pace to good effect.
Looking to set up Behrens.
Timo Hubers doing just enough to put him off.
Both defences coming out on top, and both sides attacking players unable to show the
necessary ruthless streak.
Not much in it at the break.
Köln came out of the traps quicker in the second period, and they looked the more likely
to break the deadlock.
Eric Martel's shot once more bringing Roenef into the action.
Union's keeper was the busier of the two, as the visitors produced 12 shots in the end,
but only managed four on target.
Florian Kainz, their best player in the second period, had came close himself on his return
from illness.
Union's Danish keeper producing the save of the game.
The best the home side could manage was a shot over the top from Becker.
They produced only two efforts on target all game, and as a result they missed the chance
to move closer to the league leaders.
Köln missed the chance for just their second away win all season, but Stefan Baumgart did
at least take a point from one of his old clubs as they edged closer to safety.
Union remain in third, now five points off the top.
