It is 2 30 a.m. We are in a lounge in Antalya's airport.
We are going to be heading to Istanbul and then we will be off to our next location.
We were a little bit nervous all this flying during COVID and all the regulations
but they let us on the plane. We're ready to go to our next destination.
Welcome to Barcelona. We just made it here. We took the bus from the airport. The way in was
really smooth with the exception that they stopped me for a rapid antigen test saying
that everyone who came in from Turkey needs to get one. Except for me. Except for Jeff apparently.
So here we are. Good morning. Today is our second day in Barcelona. We made it here yesterday after
a bonkers crazy travel day. We didn't sleep for about 24 hours. So we were a little bit grumpy
yesterday. We didn't bring the cameras along. You're probably glad you didn't see it. Today
we're really excited to start our explorations of Barcelona with the Sagrada Familia. So we're
really looking forward to seeing that but first impressions of Barcelona is that it is just so
pretty. It's beautiful. Yeah. All the streets are aligned with these storefronts and above it
appears to be like apartment buildings and they all have this gorgeous architectural style. I
don't know what it's called. If you know leave a comment down below. It's beautiful like wrought
iron balconies. The city is just gorgeous.
We've seen some pretty cool things over our first three months of traveling throughout Turkey
but wow. The outside of the Sagrada Familia is stunning. There's there's no other word for it.
It's stunning. We're really excited to go inside. It's 26 euro per person for general admission.
We each paid only one extra euro for a guided tour so we're really looking forward to getting
a little bit more context and history behind this. The construction of this basilica started
in 1882 under an entirely different architect. In 1883 Antony Gaudi took over this project and made
it his life's work until his death in 1926. Since then they've been continuing to construct it
under the guidance of many different architects. They were hoping to finish it in 2026 to mark the
100th anniversary of Gaudi's death but due to COVID and some lack of funding they don't think
they're going to make that milestone. Another thing that has impacted and created delays in
the construction is the fact that especially in the early days it was almost entirely funded by
the donations of the local churchgoers and whatnot. So even back then they knew that it
was going to take a long time to build. During Gaudi's life someone asked him about how it's
going to take so long to build this place and his reply was my client's not in a hurry.
Over the years the construction has faced a lot of obstacles and barriers. For example in 1936
during the Spanish Civil War revolutionaries came in and burned the crypt and destroyed Gaudi's
workshop. It took them years and years to reconstruct his models and his plans
so construction didn't resume until the 1950s.
So we've just left the Sagrada Familia. We have ducked into a cafe right across the street because
it is super cold and super rainy and one thing I definitely want to say about Spain thus far
we've had about 10 coffees in 24 hours since we've gotten to Spain and they have amazing coffee.
Absolutely delicious. We've given Angela's feet some rest. Still not in great shape but she's
going to be a trooper and try and make it out tonight. We have reservations at a restaurant
here in Barcelona that I got a great offer from one of my American Express credit cards on.
This should be super exciting so let's go eat.
Okay so after telling you guys all about how we're going out to dinner and doing all of this
and that and the other I completely walked out of the room left the camera sitting there forgot
about it so we're going to try and show you a little bit of footage here through an iPhone.
All right so we're doing our best to film through this iPhone.
First course just came out there's like this pumpkin soup.
The best part about it is it's filled with these little fatty chunks of pork belly.
So and Jeff has these little toasts that have like this smoky eel on them.
Some tomato and it's fantastic. Jeff is not usually a soup person.
Right well you actually have the camera on me right now.
Two things that I'm going to say about this food. I a do not like pumpkin and two I do not like
tomatoes. Both of these completely infused with pumpkin and tomato delicious. Yeah it's the
greatest thing ever. Pretty sure he liked it. Breast oh I keep getting my hand in this shot
sorry I'm shooting this with an iPhone it's not great. I have duck breast
and it's got like little pieces of apples but also warm things. It's so delicious.
Look how pretty those vegetables are like a bouquet.
Think good steak? That is the most tender piece of meat I've ever had in my whole life. Delicious.
Second to the last course kind of as part of the wrap-up to the meal on the way to dessert
is cheese. This is a lamb's milk cheese and it's got a look and a texture that's almost
exactly like brie except it's got a little bit of funk to it and I like funk in my cheese.
Okay so the dessert course has come out now. Once again we're filming on an iPhone so we apologize
for the footage. The most exciting part about this whole thing for me is that once again I get
coffee here in Spain. I just took a sip of this coffee and I swear to you I'm not kidding you it
is the best coffee I've ever had in my life and it's been in multiple locations and everywhere
I go it's absolutely delicious. I love the coffee in Spain. The sorbet that's with it is yeah it's
very tart. It's a great combination. There's this tartness from the sorbet,
the sweetness from the chocolate. It's delicious. All right so this is crema catalana.
It looks very similar to creme brulee. It's got like a custardy bottom and then they put sugar
on top and then they flame the sugar so you've got like this like glass type top on it.
I'm sorry I'm laughing behind the camera. That's okay. I'm sure I made a face there. It's got
cinnamon in it too which is lovely. It's a creamy custardy goodness and then this like crunchy
shivery topping on it. Made it back to the hotel room. It's been a great evening. Fabulous food,
fabulous wine. Freddy at the restaurant was out of this world. Amazing. And as we mentioned before
we took off tonight because of one of our American Express credit cards we had a great offer to go
this restaurant and American Express is going to be offering us $123 credit statement credit on our
account and the total bill tonight was 161 euros which means we only paid 38 euros out of pocket
for that entire meal all the courses full bottle of wine etc like you cannot beat a deal like that
especially in a city like Barcelona so yeah if you guys have any comments or would like to learn
more about the credit cards or just something to say in general about the video leave a comment
down below and do not forget to like and subscribe to see what happens next good night
