Learn how to travel continuously → https://www.travelcontinuously.com/ READ THE MEDAN BLOG - http://bit.ly/2SRtvHR I've always wanted to visit Sumatra and so we flew to Medan to kick off our adventure here. This is the beginning of a few weeks of exploring North Sumatra and I'll be back in the next video with my first impressions of Medan!
Travel has changed my life and I have no plans on stopping any time soon. That's why I am now running this video blog showing you how I travel the world continuously.
Good morning guys, it is 10am and we are in Bali.
We're in the airport and we're just about to fly out.
We are leaving Indonesia but very briefly.
We're about to fly to Singapore
but we are then flying on to Medan, Sumatra.
So we have a little bit of a travel day today
but we're going to end up back in Indonesia
and the first time to Sumatra.
So are you excited for Sumatra?
Yeah, I'm really excited for Sumatra.
I can't wait to see.
You've been in Bali but you haven't really been outside
to the rest of Indonesia yet, right?
Yeah, not really, right?
No.
Lombok, Lombok, Rinjani.
Lombok and Gili and Rinjani.
Yeah, that's about it.
Some of you guys know I've been to Java
and I've been to Flores and Lombok
but I haven't been to Sumatra yet
and I'm excited to see more of Indonesia
and yeah, you are too.
This is going to be good.
Next stop, Singapore.
Good morning, thank you.
Thank you.
Bye-bye.
We are back in Changi Airport in Singapore.
I actually always like coming here
because it's just because it's such a nice airport.
I've been here like loads of times
but even though we've got I think four hours here
before we fly on to Medan,
it's fine because it's such a nice airport
and there's loads to do.
Olivia's never seen the sunflower garden
so we're going there quickly now.
So cool, finally.
I've been like four times in here
This is nice.
Nice and hot.
Yeah, so this is the sunflower garden
on top of the airport.
Look, there's a plane.
Yeah, this is basically it.
I'm going to go get some food.
What would you say?
Overwhelmed?
Underwhelmed?
Let's see what else this airport has.
Let's get food.
Check this out, guys.
It's like we're back in Japan.
We just stopped off for some food on the way.
Oh my god.
I love it.
And this is actually all included on the priority bus.
So we're getting this for free right now.
You can, if you have the pass,
you can just come here
and you get like a bento set to have.
This is amazing.
I don't know, maybe some of you remember that.
Filling?
Thank you, this is so good.
This is just the amount of bowls of the stuff we have here.
So much food.
All right, we booked this in two separate flights.
One with Scoot this morning and one with Jetstar,
which means we have to come through immigration,
which we just did,
and then go back through to the other side.
It doesn't take too long, to be honest.
This airport is pretty quick
and we'll be heading to Medan soon.
All in all, we're in the country for about 10 minutes,
but it's fine.
But honestly, the more you travel,
the more I try and avoid that
because that's a big stamp in your passport.
Your passport like fills up and you run out of pages
and you had to get a new one.
But still, first world problems.
I think this is gonna help.
Help you with what?
And you can actually really hard.
Good exercise.
I don't know this person.
Guys, this is what you can look forward to
in our vlogs through Sumatra.
There's plenty more of this.
Okay, then just about four hours outside the country.
Now back to Indonesia.
Couldn't stay away.
Next up, Sumatra.
Feels like I'm going to a new country.
Yeah, it kind of is.
I think Sumatra will be a...
It's like a different country to Bali.
Yeah, probably.
Wow, well, if that sunset is anything to go by,
then Sumatra is gonna be awesome.
Welcome to Medan.
We are through and we just have to now
get a taxi into the center of Medan.
We're about an hour outside.
I just had a quick look
and I think the best way is gonna be
just to get a Grab or go car
to get all the way there.
Best and easiest.
I think you can also get a bus and a train,
but I think, you know, it's already late.
It's about 8 p.m.
It's gonna be easiest to get a Grab.
All right, we've only been here about five minutes
and already Olivia has noticed
that we are the only, well,
the only foreigners around right now.
And on the plane as well, I think.
It's not Bali anymore.
Well, it's crazy, like the amount of people
that just don't leave Bali.
Even lots of people I know,
they just go to Bali
and don't see the rest of Indonesia.
So I'm glad we can.
She has good English.
Wow, wow.
I think we made it.
Everything.
Yeah, I made it.
Okay, guys, get ready for a sexy room tour.
Yeah, this is us.
We're getting pretty much proper backpack
for the next couple of weeks.
This is just like,
it's just a bed to sleep in, really.
We wanna try and do as much as possible
while we're here.
So we're gonna be out a lot of the time
and so we don't really need a really nice room.
We're just staying here.
Actually, we're gonna go out straight away now as well.
We're gonna go explore a bit of Medan tonight.
It's already 9.30,
so I don't know what's going on.
We're gonna go have a look
and then explore all day tomorrow as well.
All right, we have no real plans for tonight,
but apparently there's a good,
like sort of street food street
called Merdeka Walk.
So we're gonna walk down there
because it's only about 500 meters away
and see what we find.
I'm gonna do my full first impressions
at the end of this video after tomorrow.
But initial first impressions
is I actually expected Medan to be a lot bigger.
Like this is the fourth largest city in Indonesia.
It's got like 2 million population, I think.
And we're right in the center.
It doesn't feel that busy.
You know, like I've spent a fair bit of time in Jakarta
and that's just like crazy city
and I was expecting something like that.
But right now, so far,
it's not like the buildings aren't that big.
It's not that busy
and there's not that much traffic really.
Right guys, I was reading about Medan earlier
and this is a restaurant to try called Tip Top.
We're not gonna do it now,
but maybe we will tomorrow.
Yeah, I have no idea if this is right or not,
but I think that's been here since 1934.
And I don't know, somewhere like that time.
And apparently it's really good food.
But who knows?
Okay, I'm pretty sure this is now Merdeka Walk.
It's like a full street of food and music and stuff.
I've only just got to it,
so I don't really have anything much more to say
than we are here and we're gonna go have a look.
Yup.
How funny, like we just got interviewed straight away
for like a university assignment.
And that used to happen quite a lot in Java
and like we've been here for like an hour
and that happened straight away.
It's cool, it's fun, right?
Yeah, it's fun.
It's nice.
Okay, I might be wrong here.
Merdeka, I think means freedom.
Yeah.
So I think this is like Freedom Square
and this is like Freedom Street.
So I think Merdeka is freedom.
Right, this place does seem good for food
and we've just been walking along
seeing so many options that we both want.
But unfortunately, we've been eating all day at the airport.
So we're not gonna be here tonight.
We're gonna go back, get some rest
and then get a full day tomorrow.
I'm actually gonna finish it here
and I will see you in a few seconds in the morning.
It is now the morning after
and we're back at Merdeka Walk.
I have a coffee to just kick off the day.
And I'm actually gonna cut this video short here
because there's loads of things we want to do today
which I think kind of deserves its own video about Medan.
So I'm gonna finish this now.
There's loads to come up in Medan, in Sumatra.
We're here for the next few weeks
and we're looking forward to it.
I hope you enjoyed this video.
A brief introduction to Medan, Sumatra.
Thank you for watching.
And this is my life.
