So much accomplished already in his Major League career, his Hall of Fame career.
And tonight he has a chance to earn his 200th Major League win.
Brandon Nimmo will DH.
Now Nimmo waggles the bat. Here comes the 1-2.
Rocketed towards right field. Hayward back on it.
And he reaches up and hits off his glove and rolls to the warning track.
Nimmo keeps running. He's at second.
Turns for third as the throw comes in to shallow center.
Nimmo stops, stands up, looks out to the outfielders.
He is set up. Mets have Nimmo at third base to start the game.
Big day for Starling today. He reached 10 years of service time, which is a big deal for players.
Poor Uncle Charlie.
A strikeout for Kershaw.
Now with one out, the Dodgers are going to bring the infield in for Francisco Lindor.
Kershaw's set. Lindor strikes out swinging.
And now there's two out.
You start to look at what Clayton Kershaw has been able to do.
Alonzo hitting .292. He had three hits yesterday.
The 0-2 to Alonzo. Swung on and missed strike three.
Kershaw comes back and strikes out the side
after the inning opening three base error by Hayward.
Nimmo is left stranded.
Now Tyler McGill makes his second career start against the Dodgers.
And James Altman, the lefty center fielder, leads off.
McGill goes away and strikes him out with a fastball.
And that's how Tyler's evening begins.
Now Freddie Freeman coming up. Three for four last night.
And keep it going, Freddie.
A base hit to left field.
One out, one on. Scoreless in the bottom of the first.
J.D. Martinez.
Continuing to fight against McGill.
J.D. to center field. Hit well.
J.D. Martinez!
With a monstrous shot over the wall and straightaway center.
And the Dodgers take a 2-0 lead.
He got it all.
A two-down runner on for the second baseman, Miguel Vargas.
The big guy's 0-2.
Just missed outside.
Oh, no, it's in there. Strike three.
And Miguel happy to get out of the first inning.
Here's a one-hopper to short.
Dug out by Rojas and then throws to first to get Mark Canna.
It was weird. It hit him in the midsection.
I think he's a bit shaken up.
And he was able to get the throw off and still get Canna by a step.
Ground ball to short.
Nice easy hop this time for Rojas.
Throws to first.
That ends the inning.
Calmly collects out number two in the top of the third.
Here's Brandon Nimmo, the only mat to reach today.
One-two.
Nimmo.
Lines on the left toward the corner.
Long run.
And David Peralta, a Gold Glove winner,
shows why.
Makes a lunging catch.
Running to the side wall.
And that ends the inning.
Two down now for J.D. Martinez, who homered his first time up.
And he drills one to right.
Way back.
That one's got a chance.
It's more than a chance.
It's a home run.
J.D. Martinez, two home runs in his first two at-bats.
Martinez now leads the Mets three to nothing.
Two at just one home run coming into the night.
Has struck twice.
Here's Starling Marte.
One-two.
Swung on and missed strike three.
Kershaw now with four strikeouts.
Now the left fielder Mark Canna.
First pitch grounder.
Kershaw fields it and retires him.
No runs and one hit.
Kershaw keeps rolling right along.
That's the third walk McGill gives up for the second out of the fourth.
And now Altman, who has struck out twice tonight.
Broken bat from Altman as the ball's into center.
Sinking in front of Pham.
Going first to third is Rojas.
A two-out base hit for Altman.
Freeman, a single and a run scored.
And he lines one to center.
But Pham is right there.
And he's got him to end the inning.
Pham's retired, two gone.
Here's Eduardo Escobar, a switch hitter batting right.
Now the one-two.
Swung on and missed strike three on a curve ball in the dirt.
Five strikeouts for Kershaw.
Three runs on two home runs, both off the bat of J.D. Martinez.
Off the glove at third, Escobar did a nice job just to get to it.
A clean base hit for J.D. Martinez, who is now three for three.
Vargas walks for the 14th time this year.
And with that walk, the Dodgers have the bases loaded one out.
They've had some situations when the offense has been flat
where they've had bases loaded no out, bases loaded one out,
and not capitalized.
Well, here with a three-nothing lead, you want to capitalize right here.
And he struck him out.
Went low and away with the fastball on three and two.
And he strikes out Peralta for a big second out.
Here comes Luke Williams.
And a fly ball hit to left center.
Angling over is Canna.
He's there.
And that retires the side.
And McGill gets through trouble again.
Here's a two-two.
Swung on and missed strike three.
Nito down on strikes.
That's a six-strikeout for Kershaw on the first out of the sixth inning.
Hard ground ball to third.
Second easy hop for Muncie.
Throws a strike across the diamond, and Kershaw just keeps rolling along.
Give it up one hit through six.
I mean, it has been a vintage Kershaw performance.
Here's a three-two.
Swung on and missed strike three.
Strikeout number seven for Kershaw.
Endure victimized twice.
Swung on and missed strike three.
Alonzo down on strikes.
Now eight strikeouts for Kershaw and no walks.
Two out.
Kershaw has just tied Mickey Lowland, 22nd all-time in strikeouts, 2,832.
Back-to-back hits for the Mets.
And just like that, the tying run is coming to the plate in Tommy Pham.
The 105th pitch of the game from Kershaw to Tommy Pham.
Swung on and missed strike three.
That ends the inning.
Kershaw screamed in satisfaction.
He has struck out the side.
The Mets leave two.
We're at the seventh-inning stretch.
The Dodgers lead the Mets three to nothing.
Ball four.
Back-to-back three passes issued by Reyes.
Jeff Brigham will be coming in.
The Dodgers in business.
0-2 pitch.
Caught on and missed.
He threw him a frisbee-like slider for out number two.
Swing and a miss.
He got him.
Threw him a backdoor slider and Brigham, with a pair of strikeouts,
escapes the jam.
So the Mets have a runner on, and here's Brett Beaty.
And there's a line drive.
Oh, what a play at second base by Vargas.
A throw to first.
Double play.
Oh, what a play turned in by Vargas.
Leap high in the air and immediately threw a seed to first.
Doubled up at first base was Alvarez.
The Dodgers have runners at the corners.
One out.
Looking for some insurance here in the bottom of the eighth.
Freddie offers at the first pitch.
Fly ball.
Left field.
Barnes tagging.
He will go.
Canis throw.
Insurance for L.A. in the eighth.
It is now four to nothing.
J.D. Martinez had a terrific night tonight.
Takes the two-two to right center field.
That gets down.
That scores another.
J.D. hustling into second base.
He will be out, but the run did score.
So it will be five-nothing Dodgers.
Pete Alonzo on the first pitch from Gretel.
Skied into the air.
Hayward calls everybody off.
The Dodgers have their first shutout of the season.
And Kershaw has win 200.
