Some of the world's best young footballers won't be playing in the
Under-20s World Cup in Argentina this month with clubs reluctant to release
them before the end of the season. FIFA took the decision to stage the
tournament outside the international window and before most European domestic
seasons have been completed. I've spoken to FIFA about it this
morning and they've told me that this tournament is normally staged early
outside of the international window so this isn't setting a precedent or
anything like that and they said they had little choice here despite pressure
from a number of FAs to try and shift it later because
there are so many other big summer tournaments happening.
You've got the Women's World Cup, you've got the Men's Under-21s Euros,
you've got the Men's and Women's Under-17s Euros and those are all
scheduled between May and July but what I understand the FA
contacted FIFA about was to say look
you allow us to change squads up until the first game until match day
minus one the day before the first game we're allowed to change our squads if
players get injured well because of this availability problem can you let us
change our squads depending on who's available
and FIFA came back and said no and FIFA have explained that to me today they say
look fairness to all countries is key here it's a standard rule they have
throughout all of their tournaments that you can
only change players that you've named in a squad if
one of those players gets injured and you withdraw them from the squad so they
didn't want to make an exception here and I understand that England's
Under-20s manager Ian Foster has had a real problem here
he announced his squad earlier today but it was supposed to be
announced more than 24 hours ago he's been constantly on the phone to clubs in
England and in Europe to try and get the players released
that he wants to be in his squad in terms of who's out Rico Lewis
Manchester City's player has been so impressive this season he's not in
although we should say as a little footnote
that I mentioned the Under-21s Euros he may well be in that squad for England's
Under-21s Euros stepping up a level so don't read too
much into that but Lewis Hall at Chelsea
Jamie Baino-Gittins at Borussia Dortmund Samuel
Ilung Jr at Juventus are not going to be in this England squad
