12 months ago, Paris Saint-Germain secured their 10th Ligue 1 Uber Eats title against
Lens.
Now, a year on, it was Lens they were battling for their historic 11th.
The job was almost done, and a point away at Strasbourg was all that was required.
Kylian Mbappé, captain for the day, with Marquinhos amongst those having to watch on
from the sidelines.
Six points clear, with a far superior goal difference to Le Songuyor.
Job was almost done either way, as was the job for Strasbourg, whose draw with Troyes
last time out had moved them six points clear of the drop zone.
A tough season for La Ressing, the one that at least looked set to retain their place
in the top flight.
It could be no relaxing for either side just yet, though, as demonstrated by El-Shadday
Bichiyabou, who just days after his 18th birthday was the one presenting a gift to Habib Diallo.
A clever back pass almost reducing the opening goal.
The defender wasn't culpable for the host's second chance, simply a piece of brilliance
from Diallo.
But Gigio Donnarumma was able to tip over his shot.
The corner down the other end produced PSG's second good chance after Mbappé's earlier
miscontrol.
Renato Sanchez with a well-struck volley, but not themselves equal to it.
Donnarumma wasn't equal to Diallo's third effort.
Unfortunately for the keeper, the shot ricocheted back past him in the opposite direction, after
smashing against the upright.
Goalless at half-time, Strasbourg not giving PSG an easy ride at the Mino for the first
time in recent seasons.
Parisians lost 2-1 there in 2017 and drew 3-3 last season, squandering a two-goal lead.
Ludwig Ontonetti knew the star quality his side were coming up against, though.
In the build-up he had said Messi is football, he is Monsieur Football.
And well, if you give Mr Football a bit of space inside the box, the result is often
the same.
Goal number 496 for the Argentinian maestro, one that almost certainly secures the title
and also moves him one clear of long-term rival Cristiano Ronaldo to become the top
scorer in the history of the top five European leagues.
Strasbourg weren't about to sit back and let Messi and PSG celebrate their achievements.
They clearly hadn't read the Parisian script as their unwavering efforts eventually paid
dividends in the 79th minute.
Morgan Sanson's initial effort saved but former PSG frontman Kevin Gomero dinking the
ball over Donnarumma a mere three minutes after coming off the bench.
The veterans' tenth of the season has hit double figures in six of his last seven in
the top flight.
Champions elect looked to seal the title in style.
Captain Mbappe trying to lead by example, but it wouldn't quite happen for them.
Nonetheless, all smiles for both managers on the sidelines and eventually the players
on the pitch too.
Final whistle signalling that Strasbourg had confirmed their safety and that PSG had sealed
their 11th Ligue 1 European League title.
Now officially standing alone with the most league triumphs in French top flight history,
they are also the first team ever to have topped the standings from the first day to
the last.
