Today I had a converstion with Jojo about the relationship between Taiwan and Mainland China; her work as a tv host for a health show and the importance of having a free and independent media.
All of this while shopping, cooking, and eating a traditional Taiwanese oyster omelet.
Jojo is the host of 健康1+1 health show https://www.ntdtv.com/b5/prog1407 (Mandarin)
She works for NTD https://www.ntd.com (English)
The supermarket where we went shopping is Da Tang https://www.facebook.com/datangmarket/

Communist Party always want to attack Taiwan.
Say we're gonna send some army and then...
Actually, this is a very simple dish and I have to break it.
And then we look the same, right?
And then they say, oh, you're Chinese.
Yeah, but we are Taiwanese.
Is there anything you would have liked to know
about the United States before you moved here?
But if you are a Taiwanese chef, don't complain.
OK, let's try this spicy thing.
So this is the final result, right?
Free information is important to the people.
Right now, I think people are starting to wake.
Hello, everyone.
Today, I'm going to have a chat with Jojo.
She's from Taiwan.
She works as a host for a TV station.
I'm very interested in having this conversation
because I don't know much about Taiwan.
I know there are some issues with mainland China.
So it's going to be very interesting to talk to her.
We're going to have a traditional Taiwanese recipe as well.
We're going to buy some ingredients
and she's going to cook something for us.
So let's do it.
What are we cooking today, you said?
Taiwanese style oyster omelette.
Actually, I didn't cook all the time.
So I have to check.
You guys eat this kind of powder?
Rice flour.
Tapioca.
No idea.
Sweet potato flour.
We definitely need this.
That's interesting.
Yeah.
Any food that you miss from Taiwan?
Well, a lot.
My goodness.
This is a very important question.
You know, Taiwan is an island.
So we have so many seafood in the local market.
Yeah, we can go to, you know,
and then to eat next to the ocean.
And then we can...
Just very fresh.
Okay.
So this is the best we can do?
Yeah, best.
That's okay.
Oh, they have this.
They also have this.
So this is something you would recommend?
Yeah, but yeah, clam.
Depends what you like.
But most traditional is oyster.
So that's why that's one.
You actually told me you moved to the States for work, right?
Yes.
Before I came here, I worked for Newtown Dynasty Television.
It's in Taiwan.
And then I worked for that for like a few years.
And because this television is...
This TV station is very special
because we try to revive traditional culture.
It's very important.
Now I'm the health host.
I also try to spread much more like positive
and really health information to my audience.
So that's very important.
That's why you're not shy on camera.
You're a host.
I'm shy a little bit, actually.
I'm too talkative?
I think I'm talkative too much.
Okay.
Actually, let's choose the organic one.
We try to choose good food.
We eat well and then we stay healthy.
And then we can help ourselves and then help other people.
That's why I recommend organic eggs.
Is there anything you would have liked to know
about the United States before you moved here?
I think it's about the United States history.
Yeah, because when I first...
First time I step in this land,
I feel the first breath.
I feel what?
You guess.
Freedom.
But did you have to learn English, by the way?
Yeah.
Before coming?
My husband say, before I get married with him,
I don't speak English.
He say that.
Otherwise, you can ask him.
Okay.
Xiao bai cai.
Xiao bai cai, yeah.
Yeah.
Are these bok choy?
It's not bok choy.
It's a little bit different.
Oh, they say it's bok choy, but actually it's not.
Otherwise, you see this.
This is also bok choy.
See, Shanghai bok choy.
Yeah, so it's different, right?
Yeah, bok choy is good.
I like it.
That's it.
That's what we get it.
Okay.
It's very simple, right?
Okay.
Actually, this is the first time I made this dishes.
I like it, but you know, my cooking skill, I'm not good shape.
So sometimes I just say, oh, I miss my country's food.
But today I want to do this for your audience.
And then see if it's successful.
Great, we'll get the recipe.
Okay, good.
Is there anything about your country, about Taiwan that you would like people to know?
Yeah.
Something important about Taiwan?
Yeah, okay.
Most important thing is so many people mix understanding
and then they mix mainland China and Taiwanese.
Because we speak same language and then we look same, right?
And then they say, oh, you're Chinese.
Yeah, but we are Taiwanese.
So many Taiwanese people, they want to point out we are Taiwanese.
We are not Chinese.
It means we are not come from mainland China.
Why?
Because the Communist Party, Chinese Communist Party,
they are persecuting the good people.
People have the belief, like Christians, like Baron Gong petitioner.
Yeah, that's the worst.
So everybody know Hong Kong, right?
I was really visit Hong Kong all the time.
After Chinese Communist Party, they control Hong Kong.
We even cannot go.
And then they destroy, you know, Hong Kong.
You can see Hong Kong like that.
Regardless of what the Chinese Communist Party is saying,
they are two different countries.
You have a Taiwanese passport.
Of course.
Yeah, of course.
I don't have a mainland Chinese passport
because they're two different countries.
That's really fascinating, honestly.
Like a CCP, the Communist Party, they don't accept,
like a Taiwanese have their freedom, this and that.
It's a little bit, you know, it's messed up.
The concept is totally, sometimes they don't accept themselves
what they're talking about.
This is the Communist Party.
I want people to really know that this is really different.
Taiwanese people is Taiwanese people.
Mainland Chinese people is mainland Chinese people.
But it's not Chinese people not good.
I have so many good friends.
They come from mainland China.
We are so close.
We are really good friends.
I learned a lot from them.
But they are not Communist Party.
That's big difference.
So many media buying from the Communist Party.
Even like Hollywood, they pay so much money for that.
And people cannot have freedom to talk what is the truth.
But NTD, Newtown Dynasty Television, I work for,
we are the independent media.
And then we try to establish the true information to the whole world
because we know how important free information is important to the people.
Right now, I think people are starting awake to understand why,
what kind of world we live and then how important is it.
At the beginning of the pandemic,
the fact that the Chinese Communist Party basically censored any truthful information
that could actually prove dangerous for the party itself.
Because, I mean, there's a pandemic coming from China.
And they were saying, yeah, it's all good.
It's OK.
But Taiwan, what they did?
Well, we don't trust the Chinese Communist Party.
At the beginning, so many countries, even in China, they blocked the information.
And then we, in Taiwan, and then we locked down the country.
And then, you know, we see the difference.
That's the mixed powder.
Yeah, mixed powder.
Yeah, here.
And mix with the water.
And here is the vegetable.
This is bok choy.
But in Chinese, it's xiao bai cai.
OK.
And egg.
OK, two eggs.
And this is oyster.
So let's do it.
Whoa, looks pretty nice.
I think it looks pretty nice.
Most Taiwanese miss the food.
Then the family.
No, I'm just joking.
Because also miss family members.
Actually, this is a very simple dish.
And I have to break it.
But if you are a Taiwanese chef, don't complain.
Wait a little bit.
I think most Taiwanese people know this.
It's dong quan la jiao jiang.
Spicy sauce.
But it's a little bit sweet and a little bit spicy.
A little bit only.
One thing I have to say, my level of tolerance when it comes to spicy food is fairly low.
So let me try first.
Yeah, really.
OK, let's try this spicy thing.
OK, let's say I can make it.
Just a bit, though.
So this is the final result, right?
Yes.
You're happy?
Yeah, a little bit happy.
Exciting.
So ladies and gentlemen, this is a Taiwanese oyster omelette.
You want to try it?
You should try it.
I use chopsticks or forks?
Actually, chopsticks is for Chinese people.
I'm good.
I think so.
I think.
And then please, do you want to have some sauce of this?
I think I'll skip this sauce.
OK, OK.
Yeah, oysters.
How do you break it with the chopsticks, though?
Just break it.
Like this?
That's good.
Really?
Yeah.
Oh, thank you so much.
You mentioned that you miss your country, which is something normal, I would say.
I miss Italy.
Sometimes, I have to say.
But is there anything particular that, let's say, you're concerned about your country,
you're worried about Taiwan?
Yeah, because in Taiwan, we have, you know, Communist Party always want to attack Taiwan.
Say we're going to send some army and then to have a war.
The Chinese Communist Party?
Yeah, they want to have a war with Taiwan.
So nowadays, we have like an election.
And also, so many communist information try to attack and interrupt this big election.
So that's why I have a little bit worried about them.
Because I told you about the media, right?
Like true information is very important.
So people have to choose which media you have to believe.
You have to watch it.
You have to get the free information from them.
And then you will know about the whole picture.
Even this whole world pictures.
So you will not be scared.
You will not feel scared or wrong information.
And it will pick up wrong people.
Thanks a lot.
Thank you for inviting me.
Yeah, next time, I'm going to have an Italian omelette.
So we had a great conversation with Jojo.
The omelette was great, by the way, if you like oysters, of course.
And my takeaways.
It is necessary that we have independent and truthful media.
Otherwise, we are not able to make reasonable decisions
when it comes to living in this international community.
Anyway, I hope it was helpful for you guys.
See you next time.
Ciao.
