Run 4 Downtown is a 4 mile run held every year in the city of Middletown, NY.
Its goal is to gather the community together for a day of fun, and the use the money collected to support the beautification of the Downtown area, when many independent small businesses are located.
The driving force behind this event is the team managed by Dave, who started the race with his wife almost 20 years ago. They are also the owners of a little great restaurant in North Street.
I decided to register as soon as possible so to give myself a goal: run the whole course and support a local event.

Hello! Are you gonna run the four miles with us?
The best thing about having a goal is when you have doubts and you ask yourself
what am I doing here? You have a reason to keep going. Let me tell you what I'm doing here.
So two reasons. One, last winter I did not run, not even a single day. That's crazy. So the only
way to make it is to give myself a very specific goal. Four miles in less than 40 minutes.
Personally it's challenging but realistic. A second thing, I wanted to support a local event.
Something that gives back to community and that's exactly what Run for Downtown is doing.
How you doing Dave? Look at this, it's in the frame. This is Dave. Dave is one of the organizers
of Run for Downtown and I had a chat with him. My wife and I opened a cafe here back in 2004
and we were looking for a way to give something back to our community. So in 2006 we started the
Run for Downtown. It's a four mile run walk, starts downtown, finishes downtown and proceeds
come back into the community helping the beautification of our downtown. This park
being one of many examples of things we've done. This clock, we're really proud of this clock right
here. The stage that this band is going to be performing on tonight, this was a gift from the
Run for Downtown. There's a pavilion that's been built that the farmers market is held under that
was built with Run for Downtown money. We have contributed upwards of $200,000 back to the
community and this year's proceeds are going to go to improvements to Thrall Park. You ready? You
come here every Thursday by the way. How are you? I come every Thursday. Sometimes I go pee in the
potty. We had close to 800 people running last year and then probably had another 2,000 people
downtown for the after party. What's your best time? I've never actually run the Run for Downtown.
I'm in charge of the Run for Downtown so it's the only local race I've never run. Ah you can
because it has to work. Correct. Someone's got to be accountable at that finish line.
And while the runners are out there running, North Street is transforming into Flavors Without
Borders Taste of Downtown. So the restaurants are setting up and we missed that setup because we're
there at the finish line. Last year when we walked around the corner and we saw several thousand
people on this block of North Street celebrating our community, that was one of the proudest moments
of our lives. Thanks a lot. Thank you. Fantastic. Thank you. Have a great one. Thank you. Bye-bye.
And by the way if you're in the Middletown area go and have lunch, dinner, whatever at Dave's
restaurant. It's called Piccolo. They have great Italian food. Link in the description below.
The race starts with those walking and in about 15 minutes it's gonna be our turn.
So I've been training for this race mostly on a trail that is nearby where we live and I've been
relying on Google Maps for the distance but I've been thinking that maybe it's not so reliable.
It's time to be sure that I can run those four miles. For those of you who don't use miles,
one mile is about 1.6 kilometers. That means that to run four miles I must be able to run
16 laps of this track. Let's see if I can make it. Mission accomplished. My only concern
running here it's not as hard on your muscles as running on a street which is where the race
will be happening. So a wise man once told me if you have to go on a mission use your old shoes.
And now the female run is about to start.
This is my code. How you doing man? That's Dave. Good to see you man. Great.
All right let me see what I got in the bag. This is fragile. Very nice. I have my number 63.
Very cool. A large long sleeve t-shirt. Very cool and colorful. I don't think I'm gonna
use this while running so this is very hot.
Good to go. Good morning man. It's gonna be a great time.
Seems it's our turn.
So far so good.
All right it seems I made it for real. I'm not sure if that's meant to keep us fresh or whatever
If you are in the area consider joining. It's a great event for a great cause
to help the community thrive. See you next time.
