Welcome to Obi-Wan: a 2022 Star Wars comic miniseries.
This is Part 4 of 5.
The storm descends upon Obi-Wan Kenobi’s hut on Tatooine, and he feels a
chill in the air that reminds him of when the dark times began.
At the height of the Clone Wars, Obi-Wan and his student Anakin fought and faced the darkness together.
Obi-Wan recalls a time when the two of them were summoned for a secret mission that would scar them both.
Admiral Yularen grimly greets the two Jedi, and tells them that this mission will be off the books.
He asks Obi-Wan if he remembers Mekedrix from the Battle of Abrion Bridge, which we saw in the last issue.
Obi-Wan instantly knows that something is wrong, and the admiral tells him that Mekedrix has disappeared.
Around the same time as Mekedrix disappeared, reports began coming in about a shadowy group called Death Wind.
The admiral believes that Mekedrix has gone rogue, and is now
indiscriminately attacking and killing troops on both sides of the war.
He believes that the war broke Mekedrix in some irreparable way,
and tasks Obi-Wan and Anakin with finding and eliminating him.
Anakin is outraged at the suggestion that they kill Mekedrix, and tells the admiral that no one is beyond saving.
He and Obi-Wan agree that they will not set out to
murder Mekedrix, but try and bring him back to the light.
They make their way to Ando, where Mekedrix and his group are believed
to be hiding, and Obi-Wan tells Anakin about some of his previous missions.
Suddenly, they see suits of clone armour, hung out to warn anyone who comes this way.
They are getting close.
They reach the end of the river, and see the ruins of an ancient building.
Suddenly, they are ambushed by some of Mekedrix’s soldiers.
Obi-Wan asks to be taken to Mekedrix, and the soldiers agree, provided they give them their lightsabers.
The Jedi reluctantly hand over their weapons, and are led up the steps of the ancient Sith temple.
They are greeted in the throne room by Mekedrix.
He has swapped out his Republic uniform for threadbare clothes, and his blaster for a sword made of bone.
He explains to Obi-Wan that the war has taught him that the only thing that is inevitable is death.
He has become a servant of death, and his goal is
to accelerate the journey of this world into the ultimate void.
Obi-Wan tries desperately to make him see the light.
He remembers the sunrise he watched those many years ago, and
tells Mekedrix that it is life that gives everything meaning.
Of what use is a sunrise to death?
Mekedrix contemplates his words, and suddenly leaps at the Jedi with his bone sword.
Instinctively, Anakin uses the Force to get his lightsaber back and ignites
it, and in an instant, Mekedrix impales himself on the blade.
Anakin is distraught about what happened; he didn’t mean to kill Mekedrix, only defend Obi-Wan and himself.
As he lies dying, Mekedrix tells Anakin not to worry, and that
this is the quickest way back to the sunrise Obi-Wan promised.
Mekedrix dies, and Anakin is forever changed.
As the old Master Kenobi contemplates everything that has happened so far, the comic ends.
Join us next time for the conclusion to this series, as the storm
passes and Obi-Wan prepares to meet whatever is left in its aftermath.
