Start it's how you finish and how about the walk-on for Georgia Cash Jones
cashing in to make it 21 unanswered points for the Dawgs in the second half
as they rally to win it 24 to 14 their 20th straight win and they survived the
upset bid from Spencer Rattler and the Gamecocks look South Carolina look good
in the first half opening drive touchdown from juice Wells but then
knocked out of the game because of an injury and Georgia couldn't get anything
going in the first half down 14 to 3 Spencer Rattler looked like a Heisman
trophy candidate 16 of 18 152 yards in a touchdown but in the second half he was
6 of 24 104 yards and two interceptions indeed a tale of two halves good teams
win great teams cover Georgia did not cover the 25 and a half in fact how
about this nugget and I hope you were listening to us before this game South
Carolina now 4 and 0 ATS their last four trips to Athens this SEC on CBS
postgame report is presented by Bell for the leading disaster recovery partner
for businesses and communities as we welcome in CBS Sports HQ college
football analyst Barrett Salih Barrett was shaky in the first half for Georgia
what changed in the second half of the number one team of the nation well I
think two things one they got to Spencer Rattler a little bit more than normal
and look Spencer Rattler's been money against the Blitz but you can only be so
good for so long in big games so that was one thing I think the bigger thing
though is they got Carson backs Beck settled in but I think most importantly
they got him settled in with a running game they really couldn't get things
going in the first half and in the second half you saw a wide variety a
stable of Georgia running backs get in the mix led by day John Edwards so you
know I think that the the adjustments that Mike Bobo made I know Mike Bobo
sometimes a dirty word dirty phrase in Athens because of some of his history as
the offensive coordinator but I think Mike Bobo did a great job focusing a
little more on the running game it got Carson Beck settled in and as we saw
Carson Beck had a great second half so it was halftime adjustments I think from
from both sides of the ball for Georgia all right Barrett sit tight much more
with Barrett Salih as we continue here on the SEC on CBS postgame report as you
take a look at the numbers for Spencer Rattler really a tale of two halves as
we mentioned 16 of 18 he started 10 of 10 he was awesome to start led the team
at an opening drive touchdown juice Wells was a really really nice play you
saw Georgia blitz there you kind of question who should they have not done
that and they got down early and then in the second half Georgia's defense
bringing the pressure early and often as Rattler six of 24 just over 100 yards
and two picks as South Carolina's upset bid fails in Athens and let's get right
to the site back out to the Georgia South Carolina game the man who called
this game Brad Nessler taking a couple minutes for us Brad appreciate the time
here what did you see differently compared to the first half to the second
half from this Georgia team I came I think the offensive line for Georgia was
really the difference in the second half I think they imposed their will on South
Carolina's defense a little more they hadn't been able to get their ground
game going really through the first two weeks of the season but they sort of
started their year last year that way and everybody forgot about it after they
went 15 and oh but Dajon Edwards having him back in there today and and being
healthy enough to go for over 100 yards and then they just kept rotating backs
and I think after a while South Carolina's on the field too long their
defense got a little bit gassed you know there was some costly penalties I think
on both teams really that could have made the outcome a little bit different
but I think Georgia's those hogs up front just said okay this is our ball
game it's raining it's gonna get a little messy if we don't bear down and
and they did and I think that was the difference in the second half Kirby
smart said they wanted to get tested and and not a lot outside of Athens
probably thought that they were gonna get tested on this day by South
Carolina we know the talent that South Carolina has we were looking probably
too ahead in terms of where they'd be tested what did you learn about this
Georgia team at the end of the day well I think the fact that you know they came
in as almost four touchdown favorites and South Carolina to score first and
keep the lead get up by 11 points and I think that's it's just a perfect
coaching tool for Kirby I know him well enough that this is gonna be perfect
because they won the game that was number one priority but to get behind
and fight back and you know missed field goals I mean they should have won the
game by more than what they did but they're always gonna it seems like every
year they have a game like that last year it was Missouri you know they
survived that and they barely won the game and everybody said you know the
Georgia Bulldog Nation was falling apart the sky was coming down because they
almost lost to Missouri well here at home you know to get pressed by a better
South Carolina team that I quite frankly thought they were coming in they
impressed me and I think to have that you know long winning streak on the line
everybody's talking about three Pete's and all that the Georgia players aren't
and Kirby certainly isn't but the fans are trust me I got a lot of friends that
are Georgia fans and they're gonna come away with this one and they're gonna be
upset that they didn't win by 30 points because that's just the way they are but
then they're gonna look back at it if it gets all the way to let's say it gets to
Tennessee November 19th and George is still undefeated they'll look back go oh
yeah South Carolina that's right we beat them that's the way they look at it yeah
and let's give a little bit of credit to South Carolina right you said pregame
that the recipe for an upset you got to start fast and they did you saw Spencer
Rattler move that offense down the field 10 of 10 led the touchdown drive the
juice Wells who caught the ball unfortunately got injured there on the
play but this South Carolina offense looked pretty good in the first half it
just fell apart because of that Georgia defense in the second half yeah and that
you know Georgia's defense knew that Spencer had to throw in the second half
because they had no ground game he was their leading rusher Rattler was and
some by design mostly by scrambling running for his life so you know joiner
had a touchdown run but it was like two yards and you know it was out of the
Wildcat formation so they got to find a ground game or they're gonna be in
trouble but you know Spencer Rattler is talented as he is they're gonna keep
them in a lot of games and probably win them a lot of games but it's just too
much to overcome today when it's just one-dimensional Brad great call as
always on CBS appreciate it for stopping by here on CBS Sports HQ 20 straight
wins for the Georgia Bulldogs appreciate enjoy the rest of your weekend you got
it Hakeem thanks a lot Brad Nessar one of the best in the business taking some
time for us here on CBS Sports HQ another win for Georgia that makes it 20
in a row that's impressive to put together a 20 game winning streak and
look they had to work for it but they got it done 21 unanswered points in the
second half to rally to victory 24 14 the eighth SEC team to win 20 or more
and they're gonna look to go 21 in a row when they continue their schedule coming
up soft one against UAB and then Auburn and then Kentucky Vanderbilt Florida
we'll see if they've got any resistance against Missouri who got a nice win on
this day back here with CBS Sports HQ college football analyst Barrett Salih
and Barrett we left off with Brad talking about Spencer Rattler he looked
great to start this game but then this Georgia defense just really swallowed up
this South Carolina offense in the second half what did you see in terms of
what will must champ the former South Carolina head coach be able to draw up
against Rattler well I think first things first his biggest weapon juice
Wells the loss of juice Wells I think finally came back to bite them in the
second half because Georgia could have went to the locker room and knew that it
wasn't an option that his best receiver although I know Zabel gets great but you
know juice Wells is the best receiver on that team and so they didn't have to
worry about that and so as a result they they lit him up even more they brought
more pressure in and Spencer Rattler to his credit did so well I mean he does so
well in the face of pressure he's done it all season long cuz South Carolina's
offensive line just really doesn't exist so you know I think they just were
relentless they were Georgia that's what Georgia defenses do and I think we'll
must champ smell blood in the water he knew that Spencer couldn't hold up long
term and they knew that he knew they had guys who could cover Liggett and even
take care of the carry and joiner when when they tried to get creative with him
so it was I think a great job by George's you know coaching staff to make
it up make an adjustment to Spencer and say hey look if if we're going down he's
gonna have to beat us and he did all he could but he couldn't do it no he could
not as for the other quarterback in this game the winning quarterback Carson Beck
his numbers weren't great what are we talking about this week if we're Kirby
smart what's the what's the message what's the adjustment with him in terms
of being a little more efficient in a game like this try not to make him do
everything because early on they were throwing a lot they were throwing a lot
more than they probably should have and it was almost like they were trying to
get him used to being in a big game because he hadn't before but when you
have this stable of running backs like they hadn't they finally got back to
that in the second half you you do run to set up the pass and I think they
learned a valuable lesson that you know yeah Carson can handle it he's a good
quarterback we saw in the second half he made some great throws and and led
Georgia to a win led Georgia from behind to a win but instead of passing to set
up the run which I kind of felt they were doing early let day John Edwards
cook you know let these let these stable of running backs that they have do their
work and make it easier on Carson Beck and and I think they'll do that moving
forward they know now that he can go out there and get the job done when the
pressure is on and I think that's important but moving forward maybe maybe
run the ball more effectively the beginning of the game so you don't have
to rely on Carson Beck too much all right so where do we expect to see more
resistance on this schedule because I look at the schedule and I didn't
expect South Carolina to put up much I think I thought they were gonna be good
today but I didn't think that Georgia was gonna be held to three points in the
first half and look it's any given Saturday right we joke about any given
Sunday it's also any given Saturday these games can be bonkers it's college
football it's why we love the sport it's things can be chaotic I mean we see it
every Saturday I mean you put up 20 like parlay together like me and I'm
thinking I'm good I'm going to the bank and then one leg loses because there's
an upset there's craziness right so when you look at this Georgia schedule I still
I keep looking down and I go Tennessee like like in late November that's the
first time I see like they're really gonna be tested in a game where they're
gonna match up yeah I mean I think it's we've seen Georgia in the past sleepwalk
a little bit on in road games Missouri last year is a perfect example where it
just kind of like it doesn't click for whatever reason so yeah Tennessee is the
one you point to and say okay really good Tennessee team we'll see how they
do tonight against Florida but I think that's the one you have to look at hard
atmosphere tough atmosphere dynamic quarterback you have to worry about them
Ole Miss you know we'll see what Ole Miss is but it they can run up the score
a little bit too so does Carson Beck have to go win that game with his arm
maybe weird things happen in Jordan hair Stadium at Auburn always weird
weird things and so in a couple weeks when Georgia plays at Auburn the big
rivalry that crowds gonna be juiced up is that a place that can can kind of
rattle Carson Beck and maybe put Georgia on the on the ropes I I don't know after
what we saw last week from Auburn it was maybe not but you freeze is a good play
caller Hugh freeze can get get the job done in big games so I think at Auburn a
home at home against Ole Miss and then at Tennessee or the three you look at
that okay those might be the potholes but I mean those are pretty small
potholes considering who it is and Georgia Georgia's a machine I'm sure
they'll find a way to figure things out yeah they have UAB next so good luck to
the Blazers all right time now for the bell for player of the game Barrett who
do you have on your docket there's the player of the game here for South
Carolina and Georgia Dajon Edwards the running back for the Bulldogs he goes
over the hundred yard mark on the second to last drive of the game really carried
that team in that second half and once he got cooking the other running backs
got involved and I think more importantly Carson Beck settled down so
I don't think with did with Dajon Edwards out I don't know if they would
have won that game he was an incredible piece I think he was part of that
adjustment that Mike Bobo make he said hey look we need somebody stable we need
somebody to be the bell cow and Dajon Edwards was that guy and everything
opened up for that Georgia offense after that happened yeah you talk about a lot
of the times when we expect teams from year to year and a lot of the times
people forget even us about changes in the coaching staff like you mentioned
Mike Bobo taking over for Todd Munkin it feels like sometimes it takes time right
for this to really gel for this to really get into the way the guy wants to
run his offense and it sort of felt like that today it was a stagnant
offense in the first half and in the second half we saw what we expect from
Georgia yeah and you know what it's not unusual everywhere yeah right I mean
yeah Mike Bobo's been at Georgia he was there last year as a consultant but he
and he knows what what the expectations are but it's also with the personnel
right we haven't seen Dominic Lovett get involved that much in the offense he was
a great receiver last year for Missouri he was counted on to be one of the deep
threats and really he hasn't really evolved into that but he can be right
so I think early in the season yeah you have to sort of find that groove between
offensive coordinator and the players but I think the players themselves have
to sort of find that groove as well because they're only three games into
this a lot of these guys have never played together at all and barely even
know each other might not even have their cell phone numbers so it is I
think one of those things there's no preseason in college football you sort of
have to bring these things along slowly at times and I think because of that you
do see some some issues arise from time to time and and people not being on the
same page whether it be players on the field or coaches with the players when
they're calling plays I don't think they need this cell phone numbers anymore
they could just hit them up on Instagram snapchat
whatever your social media please not tick tock Twitter X or whatever we're
calling it nowadays we're calling it X I sound so I sound it down I sound so old
right now so I'm gonna I'm just gonna stop we are but the social media like
you don't need cell phones right you need a phone but you know just hit me up
on Instagram by the way thanks for tagging me on Instagram last night
appreciate that what I'm here for the friends are for it appreciate it a good
teammate good teammate Barrett Salih here on CBS Sports HQ breakdown South
Carolina and Georgia as Sir Big Spur tried to peck away at UGA pregame but it
was the Bulldogs who bit back in the second half 21 unanswered points as they
win it 24 to 14 the rushing numbers quite a disparity 189 to 53 led by
Dajon Edwards 118 on the ground and Georgia grinds out a win on their home
turf much more coverage ahead here on CBS Sports HQ we've talked about it full
