Today we are going to see the descent of the Joker's walk, a scene that has become a cult and that assumes the style, the intentions and the point of view of the film.
Already, he refers several times to Rocky wanting to be his negative mirror.
We find him from the beginning with the same title spreading over the entirety of the image.
For Rocky, this rise in the march represented the social elevation that he aspired to and that he obtains at the cost of all the efforts of the world.
Rocky is worthy of the representative of the American dream in the 80s, I made a video about it.
On the other hand, Joker does the opposite by going down the social ladder of his pleasure by becoming the person he had to become.
On this, I explain myself.
The negative point that often came from the viewers is that the villains of the film have always been represented in a much more negative way than the real villains of the film.
But the point of view is important.
Because if we look at the film as being from the point of view of the Joker, therefore a distorted vision of reality, everything makes sense.
All the events of the film are therefore distorted by his vision.
He feels attacked by this world, only retains the negative side, even the extrapolation.
Just like Rocky, he takes the bad blows of life.
Rocky will use this as a motivation to surpass himself and become the person he wants to be.
The Joker, he dreams of an ideal, but it does not correspond to him.
He will take the blows until he also becomes the person he was destined for.
He just got the wrong direction.
For the two characters, this is the scene where he goes from victim to master of his life.
He shouldn't have fought and fought, which we see at the beginning of the film where he walks painfully with this coming night.
He actually had to let himself go.
This is where we see the importance of the point of view because it is filmed like a clip with several shots of different values.
By going down the steps with counter-plunged shots, it gives the feeling of the arrival of a star on stage.
So yes, there is this shot at the top, but I will come back to it later.
With the sounds, the music changes as a kind of accomplishment for the character.
Music that I cannot put for legal reasons.
He always wanted to be at the top of the pyramid to be a little venerated by people.
While in the end, his real goal in life was to go down to the bottom of society to dominate it.
Even just before, we have this shot in slow motion.
Don't you feel like seeing an artist leave his lodge after his makeup session to go to a performance?
The Joker considers himself an artist of chaos who does not blend into the crowd.
Represented here by clothes in bright colors, in a gray environment and illuminated by a direct sunlight,
similar to those found in theaters.
Light that we call pursuits.
It's exactly the same for Rocky.
He succeeded and is now bathed in the light.
And if we go back to the rise of the steps at the beginning, it does not contrast with his environment at all.
He is an integral part of him.
He is not under the spotlight, but in the shade.
The night really and morally invades him.
Just like the first rise of Rocky's steps where he fails.
For one, it is the end of the night that comes, for the other it is the opposite.
The Joker fulfills his destiny by going down the steps of society and dancing.
He is happy.
The ordeals he underwent destroyed the victim he was to create his character.
Now let's move on to a part that you will not like.
In any case, if you liked the movie.
If the movie was adored by some and hated by others, there is a reason.
There are a lot of good ideas reflected in this movie,
but which are absolutely not found in the editing and in the realization.
Example, if your reference is Rocky,
why not have filmed the sequence in the same way by reducing the cuts?
Of course it will represent a music video and the background shots are very good,
but why add all the others?
In a music video in general, you have shots of the artist in front with several values
and he dances with his friends while singing.
Interrupted by shots that have been filmed elsewhere and are supposed to tell a story.
And I come back to the top shot, which is too much.
Each shot in a movie must be useful.
Is it really useful here?
Because all we see more is the street in front with the four cars.
The Joker is just a weird guy who dances downstairs,
so useless in terms of symbols and images.
It is because of this kind of shot that the entire audience did not understand
that we were from the point of view of the Joker.
On this shot, we are from the point of view of the policemen,
and this is the case throughout the film.
The point of view changes all the time.
So yes, you can add shots with different values to give rhythm,
but for me, this shot is the shot of too much.
Overall, beyond giving a clip aspect to the scene,
which I find very acceptable, I respect this desire to stage,
but adding this shot that has nothing to do with it,
it gives me the impression that they did not know how to film it.
For me, it is typically a scene thought out as a symbol,
with everything that fits well,
but with a staging of the real completely off-putting.
So be careful, it can also come from the studio,
which demanded during editing to cut this scene in all directions
to give it some rhythm.
But basically, if in the shooting, the real made so many different shots,
it's because he was not really sure of his staging.
Afterwards, it can also possibly come from the studio,
which during the shooting demanded that we really shoot a lot of different shots
to have material for editing.
Let's talk about John Ford.
He was a great Hollywood director,
and to prevent the studios from shodding his films at the editing stage,
he made as few shots as possible,
and knew in advance where he was going to cut the scenes.
His hat was used to hide the camera lens
where he wanted to make cuts for editing.
This zenithal shot is to my taste totally useless and breaks the descent.
It's a shame that I don't have the rush to make a test edit for you
and give you my version.
It would surely be more convincing.
Like this shot value that I would not have used at that time.
Why are you taking it out of the frame?
The character is finally in his environment,
in his frame that was intended for him.
It's not now that he must feel narrow.
It's later.
Well, yes, maybe I'm cheating on details.
Like the blur on the character here.
It's him, the star.
He doesn't have to become blurry.
I'm sorry, but this scene started with very good ideas at first,
but during the shooting and editing,
they totally messed up on the details.
That's also why I'm cheating,
because this movie was sold a bit like a superhero movie,
but almost like an author's movie with intentions.
So yes, the intentions and the idea are there,
but they are not transformed.
This scene really represents the whole movie for me.
We have good ideas at first,
but which are then worked on in a very coarse way,
while trying to persuade himself that it is a huge movie.
Other critical or explanatory videos.
We wanted to explain the end of the movie,
and explain all the inconsistencies,
by saying that everything was in his head from the beginning
and that he hadn't moved from Arkham Asylum.
I don't really like this kind of explanation,
because inevitably, if you say that,
you can solve all the inconsistencies of a movie.
And this movie, there are still quite a few.
We'll see with the Joker 2 what they do with it,
but in my opinion, they will necessarily keep the background of the 1,
because if you get to the 2 and they tell you
Oh, by the way, everything that happened in the 1,
it was fake.
Well, no, actually, no.
So for me, it doesn't work.
If he wanted to be consistent with his intentions,
then we would only have had the backdrop shots,
then we would have gotten out of the alley for the chase.
You take the image of the movie,
which was censored, while it is very annoying.
If he wanted to have a nice image for the eye,
but in an easy way,
well, you put blur in all directions,
at the calibration, you draw the colors with an H,
and you add lens flares.
The more your image will be disgusting,
the more it will look beautiful.
The real difficulty is to have beautiful images
without using all these artifices.
And for that, I would quote The Amazing Spider-Man 2,
which is really the exact opposite,
with images very close to what was filmed,
with little use of the artifices I mentioned,
without the over-multiplication of useless shots.
So yes, good ideas at the start,
but don't transform the rest
in a very coarse and tedious way.
Which does not prevent you from having some plans in mind,
like here with Batman's head.
REVENGE
Or the fact that all the pendulums display 11h11,
which refers to the verses of the Bible.
I will bring upon them misfortunes
that they will not be able to deliver.
They will shout at me, and I will not listen to them.
BADASS
I like that, it's really well found.
Overall, to have my opinion on the film,
I recommend the video of Durandal,
which explains rather well the things
and what I think of the film.
I will not say that I don't like this film.
I would just say that I hate the fact
that it is put on a pedestal
as being a bit the ultimate superhero movie.
It's not a great movie.
It's not a revolutionary movie.
It's just a good movie,
in the middle of what is done.
And it's not comparable to Marvel movies,
since it's a totally different genre,
it's incomparable.
The only advantage it has compared to Marvel movies
is the fact of shooting with real sets
and outdoors.
But otherwise, it's incomparable,
and it has a lot of inconsistencies
and problems, this film.
Ah, and also, I bet you that in 2,
there will be an animated scene,
the same kind as the one in 99 francs.
Because it allows you to do trash,
from the point of view of the Joker,
without shocking the audience.
