The 33rd day of the German Unity.
It takes place in difficult times,
characterized by great uncertainties.
The challenges associated with it
were also the subject of the festival in the Hamburg Elbphilharmonie.
At the same time, there was a well-visited festival mile in the Hanseatic city.
Ralf Zimmermann from Sifat summarizes.
Unmistakably a bourgeois festival with a Hamburg accent.
Hundreds of thousands were on their feet today,
in a relaxed mood and yet with contemplative tones.
On the subject of German unity, 33 years after reunification.
Do we actually still celebrate unity?
Or has it become a habit?
I find it very important to remember again and again
why we are celebrating this day.
I brought flags with me to emphasize
that it is also about brotherhood these days,
that we remember the freedom we have achieved.
Ultimately, it is also about
being a little more just.
And the people are taken seriously by politics with their problems.
The celebration of unity is also a reminder
of political action in turbulent times.
The entire state came to the festival in the Elbphilharmonie.
In his speech, the President of the Federal Constitutional Court
warned that democracy needed the cooperation of everyone.
Appeal to those who act politically.
Therefore, our state must critically examine and adapt
traditional patterns of action.
It must learn to limit and reduce its complexity.
It must become better, faster,
above all, more solution-oriented on all levels.
Especially in epochal times like today,
the state had to entrust the people with something
and the people themselves.
The Mayor of Hamburg, too, found thoughtful words as a guest speaker.
Not populism and polarization,
but togetherness and cooperation are the commandment of the hour.
We all bear responsibility for this.
Each and every one of you should ask
whether you or he can contribute to this.
But it was also a happy celebration,
with a Hamburg accent.
Moin, moin, moin, moin.
The reunification has changed the Eastern demographically.
Many young people moved to the West.
At the same time, the birth rates declined.
According to the Federal Statistical Office,
the number of people in the next 20 years
could shrink by up to 16 percent.
The reason is mainly the small migration from abroad.
After all, for some years now,
more people have moved from the West to East Germany than vice versa.
Anja Kampinos introduces two of them.
Johanna and Floris have been living in Boltenhagen on the Baltic Sea for a while.
They live 200 meters from the sea.
The couple moved from Munich, had enough of the big city.
That it went from West to East didn't matter to them.
I grew up in the United Germany.
I don't think about it at all.
Floris Roltsch is from Hamburg.
For Johanna Stockdreher it is a return to her home.
For both the magic word Homeoffice.
It made the move possible.
Because we have fiberglass, it works quite well.
That was actually a main criterion before we moved up.
That it had to be in the apartment first,
so that you can work reasonably.
Moving to East Germany is a stable trend.
But it doesn't make up for birth defects and emigration after the fall of the Berlin Wall.
Lack of skilled workers and service workers
is the biggest threat to prosperity in the East,
say business associations.
I believe that we will not be able to cope
without targeted immigration,
without targeted acquisitions in jobs,
in workforce, even here on site.
This is the opposite of what has been learned.
We are losing people.
No, we now have jobs open.
We need people.
More people like Johanna and Floris in the Baltic Sea basin Beuthenhagen.
On October 3, the German-German relationship status is always questioned.
For a documentary, I expanded the perspective
and interviewed both East Germans and immigrants
who have been living with us for a long time.
And what you wouldn't think right away,
both groups share similar experiences.
It's about hard breaks in biography
and also about lack of recognition.
Cornelia Hilsberg heads the Wehberei Museum in Braunsdorf near Chemnitz today.
Her training and professional dreams were shattered.
I was just done with my apprenticeship
as a textile worker with an Abitur.
And suddenly the apprenticeship was over.
After three years, I stood in front of nothing
and said to myself, who am I? What have I done so far?
Millions of times identity and job loss within a very short time.
Only a few people in the West are aware of this.
This incredible cut, this break that we have experienced
and that it was not recognized,
that it still has an impact.
Almost at the beginning of zero.
Proving themselves stronger than the West German majority society.
Hülya Özdag runs the Kölner Konditorei,
which she took over from her father.
And she complains of lack of recognition.
What I always find sad is that you always say,
you are the exception, you are the exception.
But it is no longer the exception, it is the majority.
The second generation that lives here has achieved so much
that perhaps many Germans have not achieved.
Diversity and East German identity.
Hülya will be able to interview Angela Merkel
after her time in government.
And she also shares personal stories with us.
For example, her impressions of the unity symbol.
For many years I always had a certain feeling
when I walked through the Brandenburg Gate.
That only normalized after 15 years.
It always remained something special.
The whole documentary with me from the series Am Puls
has already been released.
On the Day of the German Unity,
the Day of the Open Mosque is also celebrated.
Since morning, around 1,000 churches have opened their gates
to interested guests.
It is about conveying peaceful Islamic values,
according to the Muslim Coordination Council.
The day of action has been around since 1997.
The EU in Brussels needs a new climate boss.
Extremely important.
Because he has to implement the EU's core project, the Green Deal.
That is, to convert the Union to climate-neutral by 2050.
He was the previous climate commissioner,
Franz Timmermans.
And he is now running for parliament in his home country of the Netherlands.
And he's supposed to be the new one.
Wopke Hoekstra, also Dutch.
The 48-year-old Christian Democrat
has worked in Shell.
Many EU MPs ask themselves, can such a climate boss become one?
Gunnar Krüger reports.
Until two hours ago, the parliamentarians were debating.
And their answer is first of all no.
So far there is no chance for a two-thirds majority.
Wopke Hoekstra was exactly about that.
Yesterday in the Environment Committee
he set 90% fewer greenhouse gases
as an intermediate goal for 2040.
Climate neutrality by 2050,
that will be a steep increase.
But there is no alternative.
We can do it together.
Timmermans' predecessors suggested conservatives
that he was too uncompromising with the Green Deal.
His successor is more pragmatic.
Green Deal 2.0 means for me
that we should focus on green economy and climate neutrality
and not fulfill every Green wish
that often stands in the way of these two goals.
The Greens see Hoekstra's staff
as a chain of setbacks.
The conservatives in parliament
supported the law on renaturation.
States like Germany are weakening
in terms of energy efficiency.
Hoekstra comes from the conservatives
who voted against every climate protection law last year.
That someone like that now takes over climate protection.
You can have justified doubts.
Hoekstra is now supposed to give written answers to clear them up.
Nevertheless, it looks like
he will become the man of Brussels for the climate.
For two weeks, XXL Manier celebrated
the Oktoberfest with the three constants
Brauchtum, Brezen and Bierkultur,
with an emphasis on beer.
Today, however, the fun is over.
The balance is positive. It remained peaceful
and as many visitors as ever came. Svenja Bergerhoff.
At the Festwiese in the beer gardens and tents
of the Münchner Theresienwiese, there were 18 days of Volksfest pur.
7.2 million visitors came this year, an all-time record.
Also on the last Oktoberfest day, a lot is going on.
This is actually my 8th time. I was here yesterday, the day before yesterday.
And I was here the day before yesterday.
Last time you just have to be here.
Enjoy the weather, the weather is fantastic.
There was no record in the consumption of barley juice.
Hardly surprising at sometimes almost 15 euros per mass.
Instead, significantly more alcohol-free drinks were sold.
Organizers and security forces look overall satisfied
on which this year has been. Everything has been relaxed and cheerful.
We can say that we can look back
on a largely relaxed meadow use.
We have a huge decline in the area of the theft of pockets.
So we have 40% fewer cases here than were shown.
In addition, fewer accidents, fewer drunk minors,
a very positive balance.
This is provided by the truly royal Bavarian weather,
showmen and hosts, a full turnover.
This was mainly due to the fact that this sitting in the tents
last year was due to heat or, better said, cold.
That did not happen.
I'm just happy because everyone on the meadow has earned something.
Once again, the cranes are lifted into the tents this evening.
Then it's time to get drunk and see you next year.
