What is a family?
What is the definition?
There is no official and uniform definition of what exactly a family is.
Nevertheless, most descriptions and terms are very similar and agree in their core.
The German social and educational scientist Klaus Horelmann defines a family as follows.
A family is characterized by the coexistence of at least two generations,
which is characterized by emotional connection, solidarity and reliable care.
In many definitions, but not in all, the formal main feature for a family is the
permanent relationship between at least one parent and at least one child.
In today's time, the family is no longer bound to the feature of a marriage or partner relationship.
This means that unmarried people can also be a family and, of course,
single parents can also be a family.
Basically, the coexistence of two generations, i.e. the parents or a parent and a child.
The generations do not even have to be biologically related.
Stray children or adoptive parents also count.
What are the tasks and functions of a family?
The family as a solidarity community contains various tasks.
Of course, it must be noted that each family is individual and different.
First and foremost, it is important to understand that the family is one,
if not even the most important socialization instance in the life of a person.
Socialization has an incredible influence on life,
the development and identity development of a person.

Now let's take a look at some functions of the family.
Reproduction function
By reproduction, the family ensures the social survival.
The household function
The family represents a community and offers the family members a household.
For example, the apartment as such is part of it,
but also the supply of clothing, food and other basic needs.
The educational function
Values and norms are conveyed in a family.
Rules for interaction in the family are met and agreed upon.
Not always consciously, but each family has its own rules.
Values, norms and other social behaviors are also conveyed
for life outside the family.
The placement function
The parents prepare their child or their children for life in society.
They place and position it, for example, at school and at work,
convey the value of education to them, for example.
This function is also understood as the assignment process of a person within society.
The family of origin, for example, plays a massive role
in the educational and professional opportunities of a person,
regardless of how intelligent he is.
The recovery function
The family represents a refuge for the family members.
Here they can recover at best,
find relief, solidarity and emotional support
and can recharge energy and strength.
The identity foundation
This is also where the socialization component of the family belongs.
The family, the structure of the family, the individual experiences
have a significant impact on the development of the identity of the person.
The experiences and characteristics within the family will always be part of a person.
What family forms are there?
The family forms are becoming more and more individual.
The possibilities and variants are becoming more and more diverse.
In the past, a married couple was referred to as a family.
Mother and father and the biological child.
There are now many different recognized family forms.
We want to take a look at some of them now.
The core family
The core family consists of the classic picture of the family just described.
Mother, father, child, or several children.
One-parent family
The one-parent family describes the situation of a single person.
Due to various circumstances, separation, divorce, death, and so on,
it can happen that a parent, whether mother or father, is raised alone.
Then the family consists of the respective parent and the child or children.
The patchwork family
In a patchwork family, at least one parent brings a child from a previous relationship or marriage.
In the past, this family form was also called a step family.
The multi-generation family
In a multi-generation family, in addition to the two generations, parents and child,
another generation lives in the household and belongs to the family.
Usually, these are the parents of the parents.
For the child, the grandparents.
This means that in this family, the grandparents, the parents, and the child, or the children, live in one household.
The nursing family
Nursing families are those in which at least one nursing child grows up.
In contrast to adoptive children, nursing children only live temporarily in the household
until the biological parents are able to take over the upbringing again.
With a nursing family, the status can change from today to tomorrow.
Often, however, nursing children spend many years with a nursing family.
The rainbow family
A rainbow family is spoken of when a same-sex couple lives together with children.
The rainbow family can, for example, arise when a person brings a child into the family.
Then the family form is a rainbow family and at the same time a patchwork family.
In addition, rainbow families can also consist of adopted children or nursing children.
