After the Second World War in 1946, the US Navy launched the largest expedition to Antarctica to date. The mission was called Operation High Jump and was led by Admiral Richard E. Byrd. According to the official narrative, the mission's goal was to build a military and scientific research base in the USA on the Antarctic continent. Officially, it was referred to as an ordinary training exercise and an attempt to build research bases. Admiral Byrd said the following about the operation. That the most important result of his observations and discoveries is the potential impact on the security of the United States.
