At the time of Ayutthaya, Wat Mahathat was considered a very important temple, but today there is only the ruins that reflect the bustle of the past.
In this clip, I will take you back to the bustle of Wat Mahathat, which is a spiritual center of the Ayutthaya people and a valuable treasure that is offered as a merit from the faith of the people at that time.
1. The origin of Wat Mahathat
At the time of King Sawadaan Krungsri Ayutthaya Chabappan Jantanumat, the king issued a decree, such as the seat of a special monk at 10 o'clock in the evening.
At 10 o'clock in the evening, the monks saw King Saribaramadat Sadej Patiharn calling the minister to send the king out to put up the tree to build Wat Mahathat, which is 19 feet high and 0.03 feet high.
The importance of Wat Mahathat at that time is called the center of the mind of the Ayutthaya people because it is a place where various royal ceremonies are held, as well as a place where the Phramonkolthepmuni Tathagata is built.
The prominent monk Kammavasi played the role of a spiritual leader at Wat Phra Mahathat in Ayutthaya.
Kammavasi or Kammavasi played the role of a spiritual leader at Wat Pa Kaew or today's Wat Yai Chai Mongkol.
Later, during the reign of King Somdet Phra Naresuan Maharaj, he played the role of a spiritual leader at Wat Chaiya Watthanaram.
2. The beauty of the structure of the activity of Wat Mahathat
Wat Mahathat was built in the early Ayutthaya period to give importance to the rituals more than the Uposatha, so the rituals were laid out in front, followed by the Phram Prang Prathan and the Uposatha at the back.
The Phram Prang Prathan of Wat Mahathat was built with strong stones, sand, and bricks facing east.
King Lanka, who visited Wat Mahathat during the reign of King Uhua Brahmakota, said that the Phram Prang Prathan has a statue of a king, a bear, a monkey, a mosquito, a yin-yang, a ko, a forest monkey, a krabue, and a dragon all around.
Which may refer to the animals in the snowy forest surrounding the hill of Phrasumen. This Phram Prang Prathan is the site where the Uposatha was held.
There are also eight columns, which are four layers of eight columns. The top floor of the small Phram Prang Prathan is considered to be the most eye-catching and only seen in Ayutthaya.
3. From the chaos to the destruction of the structure
The Phram Prang Prathan of Wat Mahathat was destroyed twice, the first time during the reign of King Songtham in 2149.
The Phram Prang Prathan was destroyed almost half the way to the floor, but there was no repair until the reign of King Prasatthong Songburanamai, which was 40 meters high and 50 meters high.
The Phram Prang Prathan was destroyed during the reign of the fifth ruler on May 25, 2447, and there was no reconstruction.
After the loss of Krungsri Ayutthaya for the second time, Wat Mahathat became an abandoned temple.
Due to the lack of reconstruction, the structure and Buddha statues inside the temple were completely destroyed, the royal palace and the Uposatha Hall were left only in ruins.
The stone Buddha statues that were originally built around, which is currently a famous photo spot, are said to have been caused by a broken Buddha statue and was abandoned until the roots of the trees rose up.
4. The Reconstruction of the Phram Prang Group, Wat Mahathat
August-September, 2499, the art group excavated the Phram Prang Wat Mahathat, found many ancient artifacts buried in a stone tomb that was 17.6 meters deep from the floor of the Phram Prang.
the 6th floor made of gold-plated amethyst, which is a rare and rare color found in Thailand.
7. The 7th floor is a gold-plated floor under a 2-meter diamond-plated floor, which is a random color of purple and pink that is difficult to find today, and a red spinel surrounded by a floor decorated with gourmet, pythoon, spinel, and jade.
From the middle to the end of the Ayutthaya period, the position was changed to the center in the position of the goldsmith and the top of the goldsmith.
5. The Golden Buddha Amulet in the Phram Prang Wat Mahathat Group
The Buddha statue of Prangpratana-apai is made of gold-plated metalwork and gold-plated metalwork, which is a model of the original Ayutthaya art. The Buddha statue of Prangmanvichai is made of gold-plated metalwork and gold-plated metalwork.
As for the creator of the Pratim, he asked to be born in the heaven of Nibbana, indicating that Sri Rattanakorn must be an important person in the reign of King Ratchathirat I.
At present, Wat Mahathat is one of the important historical sites in the history of Sri Ayutthaya, the world heritage site of Thailand.
