G'day from London! We are in the Shoreditch neighborhood heading to the Clove Club for lunch.
This is Chef Isaac McHale's modern British fine dining restaurant.
It has two Michelin stars and is number 32 on the World's 50 Best Restaurants list.
We were in London for a week during the World's 50 Best Restaurant Awards. While in town,
we checked out as many places as possible, from coffee shops to cocktail bars to fine
We've compiled all our favorites in a London guide that you can find on our blog.
The Clove Club is one of our favorite fine dining restaurants in London.
It's housed in the historic building that previously was home to the Shoreditch Town Hall.
Enter through the bar into the intimate restaurant,
where the tables face the action in the blue-tiled open kitchen.
The meal started with a warming broth of seasonal herbs, miso and chicken stock.
Next was a nod to Indian pakora, a tempura fried vegetable dish. Pakora sparked McHale's
passion for cooking when he was a kid, so now he makes a turbot tempura inspired by those flavors.
A buttery tartlet filled with cheese and truffles arrived next.
Heaven in a bite. The next serving was a Clove Club signature,
buttermilk fried chicken with pine salt. Juicy, crispy and delicious.
Melon gazpacho granita with almond cream and ham jelly came next. We loved the textures
and temperatures of this dish. A grilled aubergine salad followed with brown crab,
lemon verbena and fig leaf oil. This floral and smoky combo felt very Nordic,
which made us feel right at home.
A glass of orange wine from Gravner was paired with the next course. It came in a special vessel
designed by the producer to accentuate the tasting notes of the wine.
Another classic dish and one of our favorites of the meal was a serving of raw scallops,
sliced chestnut mushrooms, truffle puree, dashi jelly and brown butter.
The iconic and labor-intensive sardine sashimi followed. A beautifully scored fish filet is
served atop a crispy potato with Worcestershire mayo, chives and ginger. This was like a sweet
sushi bite and you wash it down with a creamy smoked sardine broth.
A summery serving of seasonal berries, cornwall lobster and gooseberry agua chile
freshened up our palates after the rich and creamy dishes that came before.
We were offered a choice of vintage Madeira from the 60s, 70s and 80s,
which they carefully extracted from the bottle. A few drops of the fortified wine were combined
with ginger and duck stock to create a rich and masterful mouthful.
Venison sausage came right off the grill and onto our plate. Served with a deep fried pastry
of Swiss chard and cheese, sweet corn puree and a venison jus. This was another highlight dish.
The main course was a serving of dry-aged pork with the Scottish specialty of black pudding
on the side. Also on the plate, fresh courgettes, mint gel and tomato.
Chef Isaac McHale served us the next dish, which he nicknamed the Scottish taco.
Haggis, cornitas and pico de gallo are wrapped in a blood pancake. This was so tasty he should
open a taco truck. But our favorite dish of all was a sweet and savory dessert of truffle,
potato jam, salted caramel ice cream, coffee meringue and vanilla. The texture of the potato
jam reminded us of marzipan. This one-of-a-kind dish made it to our 25 best dishes of 2022.
Head to our blog to find out how it ranked. The Cloak Club is a London institution and with good
reason. This is a must-visit fine dining restaurant for any food lover in the UK.
