Orateur : Zig Ziglar
But are you out of your mind or what?
That's what Zig Ziglar has come to say to this poor lady who had the misfortune to ask her a question.
Surprise surprise, she didn't like the answer.
And you may not like her answer either.
It is often said that it is what we are least willing to hear that we need to hear the most.
So listen up, let's go.
11 years ago, Laurie Majors, my executive assistant,
received a call from a lady in Birmingham, Alabama.
And at the end of the conversation, she said to me,
Zig, I think this lady thinks she has an impossible problem to solve.
But I think you can solve this problem for her.
In just a few minutes, if you agree to take this time for her.
I said to her, well Laurie, tell her to meet me backstage.
And I'll give her about 10 minutes.
Because my agenda was so busy that it was more or less all I had.
Well, I got there.
And I was backstage behind the curtain on one side.
And she saw me from the other side.
And she started walking through the scene.
I had never seen so much anger in a human being.
Of all my life, that I have seen in her.
She almost started crying when she saw me.
Oh, I'm so happy to see you.
I have a horrible job that I hate.
I hate everything about this job, and all the people who work there.
I mean, in terms of negativity, we were there.
She said, can you help me?
Now understand that I only had about 10 minutes.
So I looked at her, and one thing I learned.
Even if I don't do consultations,
I talk to a lot of people who do.
Psychologists, psychiatrists, and the ministry.
They told me that all the people who come to see you with a problem,
don't necessarily look for a solution.
I had a hard time understanding that for a long time.
Why do they come with a problem if they don't want to solve it?
Well, I'll tell you why.
They want to talk to you, and to you, and to you, and to you, and to you.
And if by chance you find a solution to their problem,
they can still talk to you, and to you.
They want the attention that comes with the problem.
So I looked at this lady.
And I wasn't mean.
But I said firmly.
Ma'am, you know, I'm afraid that your problem is about to get worse.
She said, what do you mean?
I said, I think they're going to fire you.
She was stunned.
I wouldn't have been able to surprise her any more
by throwing a bucket of water at her face.
She said, fire me? And why would they fire me?
And the intonations in her voice said clearly,
they are the bad guys, and I am the nice one.
Why don't they fire them to keep me?
Have you ever noticed that people who feel the problem
never recognize that they feel it?
They are in complete denial.
But why would they fire me?
I said, ma'am, I don't think there is a company in America
big enough to contain so much poison
in such a small place.
In life, it is as impossible to avoid
the drops of water in the middle of a storm
as it is to avoid the problems.
On the other hand, we will try to avoid being ourselves the problem.
And the question we could ask ourselves is,
how do we know if it's you the problem?
The simple answer is that it's always you the problem.
Always, there is no exception.
Of course, in my case, I don't say that it's you the problem.
I say that it's always me the problem.
And this realization is a good thing.
Why? Because I can change myself.
I can't change the outside world,
but I can change myself.
And being the cause of what I get,
of the external effects I get,
I can change my outside world in two steps.
First, I change myself, then my outside world
adapts to my change.
Or else, I can be a victim and say to myself,
no, it's the economy that made me have financial problems.
No, it's really not my fault.
Women nowadays are not like they used to be.
They are volatile.
At work, you're just a number.
They don't like you for who you are.
The world has changed.
It's shit.
Let's go surfing.
Let's take our motorbikes.
I want to take the big sail.
I'm fed up with this world.
It doesn't mean anything anymore.
It was better before.
What are we doing here?
Look at us, we're great.
We're good.
We're not great.
Have you ever noticed
that when someone is about to lose something
for which they complained,
whether it's a car, a house,
a partner, a job, or whatever,
when all of a sudden,
he's about to lose that thing,
that thing takes on a whole new value.
She looked at me and said,
what can I do?
I said, do you really want to know?
I came to ask for help,
but you've been useless so far.
I said, I have an idea,
and I can guarantee you
that it will work.
And with certainty,
if you do exactly what I say.
She said, I'll try anything
as long as it's reasonable.
I said, OK.
When you get home tonight,
just before going to bed,
go to a room alone.
You'll take a sheet of paper
and write, I like my job because...
She interrupted me and said,
it's going to be easy because I don't like
this job at all,
and even less the people who work there.
I said, just out of curiosity,
do you work there as a volunteer
or do they pay you for your job?
She said, I have to confess,
they do pay me.
I said, you don't like being paid?
She said, yes, I love it.
I said, OK, here's what you're going to do.
Open your notebook now
and they'll pay you to work there.
And you like that, don't you?
She said, absolutely.
But she stayed there.
I said, no, open your notebook now
and we'll take care of this list.
But she stayed there.
I said, ma'am, let me tell you
what my experience in life was like.
I discovered that in 100% of cases,
there are no exceptions.
People who refuse to go through the first step
never go through the second.
You see, she came to me with an impossible dream.
She believed that the kind Mr. Zieglar
would solve all her problems
and that she would live happily for the rest of her days.
But guys, I have news for you.
I can't solve her problems
and I can't solve your problems.
But I can give you steps
that will absolutely and with certainty
work positively for you.
As it ended up working for her.
A simple conversation with Zig Zieglar,
the Pope or anyone else
will not really allow you to change.
Because you are who you are
because you have been programmed.
Your subconscious, your beliefs have been programmed.
Most people are programmed to see what is wrong.
It's the very nature of survival,
but not happiness.
And so these people will see a lot of things that are wrong
and in addition, they will be right
in their argument of why it is wrong.
But they will not feel better.
Zig Zieglar, with his little exercise
that looks like nothing, I give it to you,
is actually offering this lady
to do neuronal re-education.
To see what is wrong
and train her brain to see what is right.
To see what she likes, to see what is beautiful.
And it is much more important than it seems.
We often think when we are tired and not very well
that it is because either we slept badly
or we ate badly.
But we sleep once a day and we eat
only three times a day.
While we have 6,000 thoughts a day.
And these thoughts literally have the power
to lock us in bed or make us go up Mount Everest.
I said, ma'am,
unless you agree
to take the first step now.
It was a pleasure to meet you.
She opened her notebook with excitement.
After going through the list,
there were 22 things she liked
in her work.
Not only did he pay her for her work,
he also paid her more than average.
She had three weeks of paid vacation.
She had a retirement plan.
She had health insurance,
life insurance and accident insurance.
She worked less than 20 minutes
from home.
She had a job that allowed her to go
to three seminars a year while being paid.
She had her own office.
22 things she liked
in her work.
Now I said, ma'am, when you go home
tonight, that everything will be over.
Go to a room alone.
Close the door.
Exchange a word of I love my job
to I love my job.
Stand in front of a mirror.
And guys, I could never say it loud enough,
but I'll try.
On the windows to the soul.
Look into your eyes
and with excitement
and enthusiasm say
I love my job because he pays me to go there.
I love my job because he pays me
more than average to work there.
I love my job because I have a great insurance.
I love my job for all the reasons
I noted.
You'll sleep better tonight.
You see, there's something hidden
in what I'm telling you.
When she says I love my job,
it means I'm grateful for my job.
And of all the emotions
that we can have,
the healthiest human emotion is gratitude.
I just noted three things
for which I am grateful in the comments.
It took me less than 30 seconds,
so if you want to do it, why not?
It will make positive comments
and inspire others to have other things
to be grateful for.
Do it every morning and do it every evening
and you will have an excellent recovery
from an advanced case of dry thinking.
Well, I didn't tell her,
but I'm telling you,
that's what it was.
It was an advanced case of dry thinking.
Well, six weeks later,
I was back in Alabama.
I was doing a sales seminar.
And she was there,
sitting in the front row,
giving me happy signs
as if she had eaten a banana.
I'm telling you,
if we talk about someone who was enthusiastic,
she was completely in the game.
She told me,
Mr. Ziegler, I'm doing perfectly well.
And I thank you for asking me the question.
She told me,
you will never be able to believe
how much the people I work with have changed.
I have to tell you what it is, you know.
You will never change anyone
until you change yourself.
Everything really starts with you.
