For one local family,
this is a painful time of year this
month marking the six year anniversary
of losing their six year old young son,
but their grief turning
into a life changing gift.
Now they want to share that
message with others,
especially in the Hispanic community.
Actually,
is racing culture reporter Toronto
Thomas now with their story, man,
if you just knew him,
he was just that kid,
a little boy who lived his
life like it was an adventure.
All star in school.
Great kid fun.
It's no wonder Orlando Mojica
loves superheroes so much.
He would wear his capes
in his Hulk costume and for
three years he fought like a
superhero battling a virus that
caused respiratory illness until 2017.
He stopped breathing.
And I tried to pull him out of the car seat.
Ran him into the hospital six years ago
this month, Orlando passed away,
but not before doing one last heroic
act and a woman approached us and
she let us know about a little girl
that needed a liver.
My wife and I just looked at
each other, say yeah,
Martin Mojica and his wife,
Jessica said yes to organ donation,
a selfless act that amazes even those
with gift of life donor program
families during their worst possible
time being able to see that they
could help somebody else that yes
happens more in the Hispanic population.
We see authorization of the highest
authorization rates in that Hispanic
community with 61% of those asks saying
yes to organ donation, Orlando's organs,
helped three people making him the
superhero he always wanted to be.
Friends and family pay tribute at his
funeral, all dressing as superheroes.
A moniker his dad now literally
wears as his sleeve and I have a
sleeve dedicated to him.
His favorite superhero,
Miles Morales.
His ashes were actually used in this
tattoo portrait, all to honor the
little boy who lives on through
those he helped. Orlando was a hero.
