The new effort to support the families
of two Philadelphia police officers,
one who was killed in the line of duty,
the other who was hurt and remains in the hospital.
Both were shot in that ambush-style shooting
in West Philadelphia over the weekend.
Now the Philadelphia Police Foundation
is calling on the community to step up and help.
Action News' Maggie Kent is live outside
of Penn Presbyterian Medical Center
with details on how you can help. Maggie.
Well, Sarah and Brian, we're also getting more details about
the officer who is still here recovering.
His name is Officer Hector Rodriguez.
He is a nine-year veteran of the force,
33 years old, a father of five, a husband.
He is recovering here after that shooting on Saturday
that claimed the life of his partner, Officer Shane Sieber.
And now the community is rallying around their families.
He wasn't there when they drove up. And when they knocked on the door,
next thing you know, he's behind them.
So it was an ambush.
Early Saturday morning, an ambush that claimed the life
of 40-year-old Philadelphia police officer Shane Sieber
injured his partner, Officer Hector Rodriguez,
and rocked the entire community.
We're told despite being shot 12 times,
Officer Rodriguez is able to talk.
The 33-year-old husband, father of five
and nine-year veteran of the force, is on the way to a long recovery.
President of the Philadelphia Police Foundation Maureen Rush visited
his family in the hospital.
This is not a couple-minute issue.
This is going to be a year or more issue.
Rush making the call now for community support
to ensure that both families get the care they need.
For those looking for a way to help,
the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 5 is also collecting donations
for the fallen officer Shane Sieber's family.
The Air Force veteran had 10 years on the job
and is survived by his wife, a 7-year-old son, and 3-year-old daughter.
We wanted to make sure that for both families,
they don't have to worry about financial issues.
As community support from small businesses rolls in, this Sunday,
the Philadelphia Police Foundation is hosting its Run for Blue
on Market Street in support of fallen officer families.
It's just one way for people to kind
of embrace each other during this really sad time,
and that's what people are trying to do. How can we help?
And we've posted a link on our website,
6abc.com slash links for ways that you may be able to help.
Just a note, if you want to join in for that Run for Blue on Sunday,
you have up until Sunday at 7 a.m. right there
at the race start to sign up and join in.
And Sarah, I know that you're going to be there emceeing once again
this year. It is such a powerful event.
It really is. I encourage everybody, if you can, to sign up
and participate. There'll be a moment of silence for Officer Sieber.
It'll be an emotional day,
but nice that everybody can come together Maggie. Thank you
