So, since October 1st and throughout the month in France, the whole country has turned pink.
It's Octobre Rose.
So what is it?
It is a campaign that has existed for a few years in several countries.
And in France, it's been 20 years that every year, the whole country organizes Octobre Rose to mobilize and support an association called the Pink Ribbon.
It is an association that helps fight breast cancer, therefore in the vast majority among women.
Here, for a category of people, we can use the word among to say among, therefore among women.
A ribbon is a small strip of fabric, and as far as the fight against diseases is concerned, there are different colors of ribbons that each symbolize a health action.
The red ribbon to fight AIDS, blue for prostate cancer, pink for breast cancer, etc.
The Pink Ribbon association in English was created in 1992 by Evelyn Lauder and the Self Magazine magazine.
Evelyn Lauder was the vice president of the Estée Lauder group, a multinational of cosmetics, care or other beauty products that have existed for 77 years and that you may already know.
It was from 1989 that Evelyn began to personally invest herself in the research against breast cancer by founding a screening and care unit for this disease in New York.
The screening is the set of examinations that are done to find a disease in a person.
And care is the action of healing.
In France, it was from 1994 that the Estée Lauder group partnered with Marie Claire to form the Pink Ribbon, which was otherwise called Before 2020.
And Marie Claire is not a lady, but it is a women's menswear magazine.
The association is largely financed by patrons or benefactors, which are brands, teachers or companies that will provide their financial support.
So we say in French, support a person, an association or a sports team, for example.
The main missions of the Pink Ribbon association are, first of all, to support research against breast cancer.
The word in French is research, and a scientist who does research is called a researcher.
So beware of this little paradox.
As for the verbs chercher and rechercher, they are sometimes synonymous, but rechercher means that we use a specific method to achieve a result.
The other objective of the Pink Ribbon association is to raise awareness and inform the general public about breast cancer and the crucial importance of regular screening, i.e. recommended exams.
And for that, every year, they create a large national campaign called October Rose.
Throughout the month of October, there are events all over the country, with the aim of preventing and raising funds for the association.
We can say collect or collect funds, money.
These events can be solidarity marches or marches organized in big cities, but also auctions, birthday parties, or many other things.
In short, other associations, communities or mayors do their best during this full month to create beautiful things for Pink Ribbon.
And all the collective benefits of these activities will be paid directly to the association.
Here, reverser is synonymous with giving back money.
I touch money and give it to someone else, so I give it back.
Some brands also sell products in October Rose special edition to give back money on sales benefits, for example.
French cities are also decorated in pink in different ways, such as with pink fabric on statues or monuments,
pink umbrellas installed in the streets, various signs, pink inflatable balloons, etc.
And this year, to celebrate its 20th anniversary, the association launched its campaign for the first time with an event that took place on the Champs-Élysées,
the most beautiful avenue in the world and the most representative of our country.
It was the first day of the month, so October 1st.
There was a parade of 99 women and a man with breast cancer or already healed, all dressed in pink and white for the occasion.
Symbolically, white blouses also paraded, so doctors, researchers or healers.
Indeed, a blouse is like a jacket that goes down to the knee and that puts on top of the other clothes to protect them.
And the medical or scientific staff usually wears a white blouse.
This parade was accompanied by a song thanks to Jennifer, a very famous French singer.
By the way, I leave you the link of this artist on Spotify, if you want to listen to his music for your contact with French.
The event was presented by the Marennes d'Octobre Rose 2023, three very media women who were part of French culture,
who were affected by breast cancer, but who healed from it.
And the male of a Marenne says to himself, a godfather, yes, very good.
The first of these three Marennes is called Evelyne Délia and she has been presenting the weather on TF1 for several years.
French people love to watch weather forecasts to know how long it will be tomorrow or in the next few days.
And we call it the weather.
And Evelyne Délia has been presenting the weather every day for 30 years on the first national channel called TF1.
So she is really well known.
The second Marenne d'Octobre Rose is Claudia Tacbo.
She is a stand-up comedian, so someone who does sketches in shows.
And the third is called Alice Dettolenaer, a former model and Miss Burgundy 2010.
I didn't know her, but I knew her companion, the French swimmer Camille Lacour, quintuple world swimming champion.
Yes, in French the first name Camille is mixed, used for men or women.
And it is during this parade that three emblematic monuments of Paris were lit in pink.
The Arc de Triomphe, the National Assembly and the famous Eiffel Tower.
A magnificent show.
Our tower has been illuminated in pink for several years for this occasion, but for the other monuments it was the first time.
So we can see that this annual event is getting bigger and better.
Moreover, next year, if you visit Paris on October 1st, there is a chance that you will see the Eiffel Tower in pink.
Paris means decorated and embellished.
I said it, the objective of this campaign is also the awareness and prevention for all women.
So the association deploys different means, such as the distribution of prevention kits for medical organizations,
such as pharmacies, clinics, health centers, medical offices and so on.
And this kit includes an information brochure on breast cancer, a flyer on the association and a poster on self-examination.
Palpé means to examine by touching.
So the poster explains how women can self-examine their breasts.
This campaign is important since nowadays this cancer continues to affect about 60,000 new women per year and it is the most common cancer in them.
But detected at an early stage, so very early, there is a 99% chance of survival over 5 years.
So if it is detected early, it is generally easier to treat, with less risk of sequelae, a better therapeutic result and therefore an increase in chances of healing.
The pink ribbon insists on annual screening.
Since the association has invested in the fight against this cancer, it has raised more than 8 million euros for research and has made it possible to reverse the disease.
It has also ensured that this cancer is no longer a taboo in our time, whereas it was the case several years ago and suddenly many women did not dare to be tested or talked about it.
And on public posters, in TV spots, on the radio or by other means of broadcasting the campaign, we can hear or see a woman claiming the slogan of the pink ribbon of this year.
Research saves lives, it saved mine.
Here is a short but rich episode in vocabulary.
