is bts's junguk becoming a typical
American F boy in his recent songs is
that good or bad for Asian
representation because not all BTS fans
are happy about it I'll tell you this
man this is a debate on the internet
because you know who's killing it on the
internet streams is junkook so make sure
you like subscribe and turn your
notifications because I think this is a
larger discussion about just Asians
assimilating to Western standards uh is
it good is it bad what are the pros and
cons because a lot lot of people Andrew
feel a lot of different ways so make
sure you like subscribe and turn on your
notifications because we're breaking it
down on the hot pop boys yeah but uh you
know what's also killing it on the
Internet it's smalla sauce check out the
Instagram at smalla sauce you'll see all
the content that we're producing Foodies
and chefs alike really no Andrew both
soft boys and F boys and soft girls and
F girls like SMA get
it.com everybody loves it Andrew this is
uh so many posts there's so many posts
we could go on so many different forums
I'm going to focus on one particular
Reddit post that is based around Asian
male representation he says junkook is
getting the F boy Vibe with tattoos and
American Style music this is part of
bts's growth philosophy they've been in
the game for so long Andrew a lot of
people are talking about Justin Bieber
Justin Timberlake they went through this
thing where they were perceived one way
good boys goody good boys maybe even
Christian boys but then they became Bad
Boys edgy boys doing things that are
adult boys and they're reflecting it in
the music and a lot of people like it
but a lot of people don't like it yeah I
mean I feel like longtime BTS fans are
having one of two reactions this is from
the longtime BTS fan Bas it's like wow
we're glad to see him evolve and then
there's another side that's like no
that's not the June cook that I know
let's be honest though it seems like the
ones that are more happy to see June
cook evolve and do songs with rappers
white artists black American artists uh
are more the white and black K-pop fans
and more listen guys this is just what I
think more of the Asian Asian fans
whether they're fans in English speaking
Asia or just Asia they're the ones being
like junkook you're being a bad
degenerate Western person and then I
feel like a lot of Asian guys who are
not huge K-pop fans are just like I
don't know I'm glad to see it I don't
know Jun Cook's cool he's doing songs
with all these cool artists what's wrong
with that so I guess we're going to get
into the comments section but David
before that do you have any uh quick
thoughts yourself I think from an Asian
male representation angle it almost
seems like the 3.0 of what uh tayang did
with wedding dress cuz tayang was the
guy that was in the earlier generations
of K-pop that had the most crossover
appeal right yes um and then Jay Park
did it on a smaller level right because
he never had the global stardom but it
was more like still known within a lot
of people uh and I feel like junkook
he's almost like the biggest star but
it's a big deal because he's from BTS
which started out being very like you
know you just have to express your heart
and like change the world and they were
speaking up on behalf of stop Asian hate
even though they weren't even American
and they went to the White House and
they spoke to the president about it but
then it seems like he's more leaning
into what typical American themes
of effing all night sleeping around you
know hooking up with chicks but he he's
tall he's got a full blasted arm cast
tattoo Andrew um he's got his shirt off
defin a thirst trap for women so do you
see what I'm saying it's like he's going
against all the Asian nerd engineer
computer program or stereotypes but then
some people on the Asian guy side are
like dude I wanted him to make soft
Asian guys uh like pop but now he's just
becoming a f boy just like Bieber had to
do so he's like buying into it and
that's the only way we can win and
appeal to outside groups
so some Asian guys are thinking damn
dang junuk just fell into that F booy
Lane just like everyone tells everybody
do to go uh work out get the full sleeve
and do all these things be uh be not
Confucian be social socially deviant
outside of the model minority box
because you would say prior the BTS
music you could play it at a boba shop
at any boba shop you play it at a
Christian boba shop you can't play Jun
C's new singles at a Christian boba shop
yeah that's true I think that um there's
a fear that this is I don't want to say
poisoning K-pop but that more K-pop
artists will follow this suit and try to
become the next Jun cuk as in how junuk
is a massive star now I mean his songs
he was the fastest Spotify solo K-pop
artist to ever reach a billion streams
in globally in the history of Spotify
but the music does sound more like
American English most of it it's most of
it is in English you say sounds more
like Chris Brown or does it sound more
like who does it mixure it's a mixture
but I think that just some people are
like oh I don't want all the K-pop
artists to do what he's doing just for
fame and extra Global clout no I I think
it'll actually be a bigger deal if new
jeene starts stepping into that
territory I think that that they the
president of Korea might South Korea
might have to comment on that because
you know the standards for men and women
they are different like yeah I don't I
don't think that uh all the K-pop
artists are going to try to take this
route I really don't think so I think
that there's always space for a couple
to try to go for it but would you agree
that you have to have it in you you got
to have that dog in you right yeah yeah
um what do you think Andrew in the
Chinese world I guess the most
comparable thing would you agree with me
who actually in a way facially kind of
looks like Jun cook too Jackson Wang
yeah Jackson Wang kind of like sort of
has a bad boy image but not like too bad
I guess you know what I'm saying I mean
he's he was drinking Hennessy with a
fully tatted sleeve with a you know what
I mean I mean people are adopting I I
don't know if he's adopting the Kevin
wind it's more like a Kevin Kim I always
say the Kevin Kim is more K-pop Centric
anyway let's get into the comments
section somebody said it's not a big
deal he's just getting the ABB look or
his version of ABB look and uh the truth
is all their Western English songs are
far more sexualized than their Korean
ones because the societies operate
differently and have different standards
and thresholds for what is acceptable
hopefully more sexualized Asian male
music means less worship of white
rappers like Jack harlo or just at least
will lead to more non-asian women liking
the ABB look that's achievable for an
Asian guy without dying our hair blonde
and wearing blue cont ta It ultimately
do you agree from this what is your
opinion it will help Asian guys Jun
Cook's new edgy creative Direction and
lifestyle direction or whatever you
could say whether it's reflected in his
off camera life or not is good for guys
uh it's good for overall Asian dudes yes
yes okay and a lot of people were saying
they were surprised because when he was
part of BTS he was the shiest guy and
some people even called him a f booy
back then and now he's almost going more
hyper masculine and he's kind of like he
was is like a closeted freak and then a
lot of people were talking about how
just the BTS members are all growing up
and RM recently had a controversy where
he posted Frank Ocean song Bad Religion
and then he had to do this whole thing
where he's like guys yeah I I just
didn't mean it so I didn't mean it but
I'm not going to say sorry but what if
Jung is just like oh well you know like
I want to make a song for like American
Market come on his voice is deep is it's
more broish than that no no I and no I'm
just rm's voices no what if he's like
yeah you know I just want to make a a a
song for America so I just talk about
American things in my song you know so I
have to have American subject matter
yeah I mean so you're saying that that
the logic could be as Baseline as simple
as could be that logic um somebody was
saying that you know um you know it was
cool when they were reaching back in
their peak in 2020 when they went to the
White House and now they're just fitting
in with everybody and someone was like
no I just like that they're not fitting
in someone said oh he just turned into
another generic Bland Western pop star
do you think it's because the music and
here's a snippet of a rock song that
sounds more white that he's releasing in
in a couple weeks do you think it's just
because simply Andrew these songs are
being written for him by a white or
black songwriter and Jun cook is very
open about him not he might pick his
collaboration artist but he's not
writing his songs in English he's not
that good at English yeah are they more
mad at the subject matter or mad that
the I guess lack of uniqueness in the
music I don't know right right I there's
yeah it doesn't fully sound I do feel
some K-pop influence in it but it feels
about what like 703 70% on the more
Western influenced side uh whether it's
white or black obviously it depends on
the songwriter or whatever the reference
track was made by somebody said it seems
like Jun cook is ultimately more
concerned with becoming mainstream in
the global Society rather than finding
or creating his own musical Identity or
you could say that the identity for
himself that he actually truly
authentically wants is making mainstream
music and to be another popular artist
since that's the case fans just need to
come with the terms with the fact that
they probably don't and probably will
not enjoy his music and he's not the
artist for them anymore yeah I think
that's also part of growth I think part
of growth is um changing yourself as an
artist doing what you feel is authentic
or what you want to do with your
platform and some fans will stick around
for it and will support you and will
grow with you and then other fans are
going to be like you know what this is
not for me anymore they wanted to stay
bubble gum everybody does that if you've
been an artist for more than five six
years you're bound to want to do
something different right somebody said
that's the problem with K-pop stands
they stand the perceived image of the
person and not the music and then they
start to have a crisis when they realize
they don't actually Vibe or agree with
the person that they're standing
basically somebody's saying they're
projecting all these things onto a
person who maybe that's just who they
were all along they're just being who
they want to be and now you're mad at
him because you feel like you control
like you've been sold this image and
you're offended that that person's not
fitting that image I mean that is the
problem I guess with phandom right
Andrew there was also a really
interesting uh discussion from black BTS
fans that were accusing some of the BTS
Army of being racist because they're
saying that Jun Cook's being bad or
sinful or being more edgy degenerate but
now that his songs are with black art
that are more from the street he has a
song with Lotto obviously lot is from
the hood of Atlanta um Central C he does
have a song with Jun C where he's like
uh you know I'm never alone cuz I stay
with a shooter right
right he is talking about having
somebody with him that is armed
constantly ready for conflict on a song
with junuk and some people they're like
why' you do it you're going with the bad
people with the guns and and then some
of the black BTS fans or just just other
BTS fans are kind of like hey like it
kind of sounds like you guys are being
racist towards like Black Culture or
like black artists or what you think is
Black Culture I think that junuk is just
making American Music like he has an
American side and now a K-pop side when
he's back with BTS he's being K-pop when
he's on his own doing songs with Western
artists he's just Western so you're
saying he's doing sort of what some
asian-americans do when they are at
school when they're trying to fit in and
be cool and then when they go back home
and their Grandma's living exactly when
you're at school you're hanging out with
all the kids talking all that crap
talking about girls partying but then
when you go back home you're like a good
little Asian kid mom yeah Mom yes
Grandma but then when I go and leave out
the door with my friends I'm free hey
it's like you walk out the
door let's get ratchet in Western I knew
people who went to school who would um
when they left our house they would be
wearing one outfit the acceptable outfit
and then when they got by the time they
got to school they would be in slightly
different clothes because who they are
at home is different than who they are
outside and I think part of his growth
and I'm not a longtime BTS Army stand
right I mean i' I've been I've always
been a exterior fan but not a huge fan
right so I'm like yeah I guess this is
what I see as a dude you know but of
course I get it if BTS fans are mad
about it I totally understand their
perspective so ultimately what do you
think Andrew there's uh Jackson Wang in
the Chinese World obviously Jun taking
over the stream game the music's banging
I like the music a lot like I'm not
gonna lie I I fited the more westernized
crowd or more edgier or whatever I like
it no you could play seven that song
even at a
non-asian like Club type bar that's like
more fun like a mainstream top 40 top 40
it's a top 40 song and nobody's going to
be like well turn that off no it's a top
40 song so I say as long these guys get
edgier but as long as they don't get
into real trouble like real crimes
whatever happened to Chris Brown yeah or
Chris Woo or like oh my gosh Lan of the
terrible stories you know and like the
people who got caught up in illegal
substances or illegal activity or
assaults and stuff as long as they keep
that clean I think their subject matter
is going to change you know Jackson
Wayne's going to play with it Jun cook
is and just yeah so I don't know yeah
ultimately guys it's an interesting
discussion like we said there was like
arguments and counter points back and
forth there will never be lack of clean
K-pop artists coming up because the next
K-pop artists that come out of Korea are
probably also going to be clean have a
POS they make them all edgy now because
they see how globally profitable it is
and then K-pop doesn't represent me in
my constituency anymore yeah I I think I
think some artists will try but I don't
think it's going to change for most
people so anyways guys you let us know
what you think in the comments down
below um about Jung Jun Cook's Evolution
and growth and by growth I don't
necessarily mean he's a better artist
now but he's definitely talking about
more adult material so yeah it's F boy B
boy d boy it's scary to me but can you
talk about adult topics without doing
songs people I think it's a really
interesting discussion obviously you can
just keep it isolated to junuk but it
really has to do with like how
traditional and Confucian a lot of Asian
and the world is BEC
westernized and we want to blend more
because it's more fun to blend and it's
more interesting to have these different
flavors when you juxtapose this layer on
that layer that haven't been juxtaposed
how do we do it of course nobody's happy
but uh it's moving forward guys listen
hey ain't no point trying to stop this
Boulder rolling down you just try to
guide it uh let us know what you think
in the comments section below valid
points on all side we encourage the
argument until next time we to hop out
boys we out peace
peace
