There's this idea of body types in Ayurveda, which are also known as dosha. There's three main body
types, and then people can be combinations. It starts from the five elements, but then each
element has its associated qualities. Each dosha is primarily composed of two elements.
So we'll talk about vata first, which is comprised of air and ether. So a vata person
tends to be light in their body weight. Their bone structure tends to be lighter.
They're more mobile, which means they tend to anxiety and hyperactivity, and therefore
deficiency because light is a deficient state versus heavy. Vata types would be the ones who
have trouble gaining weight if they're strongly vata. Vata is the source of pain because it's
hypermobility. So the next one is pitta, which is fire, most associated with fire, but also water.
So if vata is mobility and movement, everything in the body that moves is vata. For pitta,
it's about transformation. It's about the chemical and enzymatic reactions that take place in the
body. It's about awareness and intelligence and comprehension of ideas and thoughts. It's
everything about transformation and awareness. So it's heat as well because of the fire. It's
passion. It's focus. It's getting things done. It's being productive. It's your A-type personality.
Pitta types make great leaders. Pitta types are often in the middle. When it comes to body
weight or structure, it's medium. Vata is light. Pitta is medium. Pitta types get prone to
problems with heat and inflammation. They often have digestive tracts that move too fast
because of that hyper enzymatic reaction. They get fired up easily and they get irritated easily.
They're prone to powerful emotions and often anger, frustration, aggression. When a pitta
person is imbalanced, they're just aggressive and competitive. They don't even realize it because
that's just how they are. It's a function of the quality of the blood. It's hot. It's
pumping. It's moving. It's causing the emotional reactions and the mental thinking.
So that brings us to the idea of there being a spectrum of these qualities. There's very hot.
There's kind of hot. There's a little hot. There's neutral. There's a little cool. There's quite
cold and there's very cold. Kapha is definitely on the cool side because kapha is the energy of
lubrication and stability. So all the mucus and the water in the body and we need mucus. It's
lubricating all of our channels and protecting them from that strong acidic kind of pitta stuff.
So kapha is protecting us that the mucus is lining our stomach where all those powerful
hydrochloric acids are and protecting the stomach from self-digesting essentially.
And it's lining our respiratory tract. It's lining the entire digestive tract. It lines all of our
organs. The end product of excellent digestion in Ayurveda is ojas. And ojas, it's kapha. It's
basically the finest product of kapha. And ojas in Ayurveda is your vitality. It's your immunity.
It's your protection. And I like to think of ojas just like compost. It's cool. It's moist. It's
rich and it's life-giving. So a person whose kapha not only has usually a larger body structure,
but they often have those big, you know, watery, warm eyes and beautiful thick hair and eyebrows
and, you know, beautiful big lips. And they have the most dewy, beautiful skin because a kapha
person has richer blood. Because this body type is really good at preserving or conserving. So
a kapha type tends to be quite stubborn, tends to be lazy, tends to be like the couch potato
because they're very satisfied, right? When the blood is rich and nourished, you just feel happy
and satisfied and content.
