Attorney General Garland: We look forward to discussing our joint efforts in support of Ukraine as well
as our work together to combat terrorism including Hamas' horrific attack on Israel,
as well as drug trafficking, cybercrime, and migrant smuggling.
Assistant Attorney General Kanter: As law enforcers, we must remain steadfast in our efforts to hold wrongdoers accountable,
especially when there is so much at stake. We are taking action
where people most feel the effects of concentration. And we are having success.
Deputy Assistant Attorney General Choi: In our increasingly interconnected world, corporations with international reach should
build their compliance programs with sanctions, export control, and national security laws at
front of mind. The key to stopping the illicit flow of funds and sensitive technologies is for
companies to implement effective and robust risk-based compliance measures as part of
their controls. Companies need to invest in compliance now or pay the price later.
U.S. Attorney Lutzko: Working together the DEA, the Ohio State Patrol, the Ohio Department of
Rehabilitation and Corrections, and Italian Law Enforcement Officials idenfitied Miserotti as the
overseas source of supply who was sending poisonous deadly drugs into this country.
Attorney General Garland: We allege that Elmer Canales-Rivera, a founding member of MS-13’s ‘Twelve Apostles of the Devil,’
bears responsibility for the gang’s efforts over decades to terrorize communities, target law enforcement,
and sow violence here in the United States and abroad.
The arrest of this high-ranking, long-time leader of MS-13 should serve as a warning to MS-13’s other leaders
that the Justice Department will hold you accountable for your crimes.
Attorney General Garland: In October 2022, I issued new regulations establishing the Data Protection Review Court
to serve as the second level of a new redress process established by the President’s Executive Order
on Enhancing Safeguards for United States Signals Intelligence Activities.
Although this court has been established at the Department of Justice,
its judges will independently decide what remedies, if any, are appropriate for the cases in front of them,
and the intelligence agencies will be expected to abide by their decisions.
Associate Attorney General Gupta: One year ago, we set out to simplify and improve the process for student loan borrowers in bankruptcy.
I am thrilled that our one-year review indicates that our efforts have made a real difference in borrowers’ lives
by ensuring student-loan discharges are more accessible to eligible borrowers.
We will continue working with our partners at the Department of Education to ensure the process continues to be a success.
