#AD Welcome to my allotment gardening channel. My name is Emma and these vlogs are my allotment diaries. 2023 is is my forth year on my plot. I'm learning as I go and would love for you to follow my allotment gardening journey by SUBSCRIBING to my channel!
I wasn't mentally prepared for structure building today that's all it is guys
normally i'm much better at this
good morning guys so i've come all the way back here to try and get away from
the noise i think someone is chopping down their
new allotment plot with power tools it's so noisy
i mean there's nothing wrong with doing it if you if that's the way you want to
do it but my gosh the noise just gets to me
i don't think i like loud noises actually i think it was like when i was
a kid i used to be quite scared of loud noises so maybe it's something to do
with that but anyway that's what they're doing right now so
i popped down and i have just noticed blooming squirrels
have done it again this is becoming a real problem now a
real problem they are just not going to let me have
this are they is there some kind of deterrent i can do
for squirrels because that is ridiculous and the thing
is they're actually knocking out the pane of
glass here i don't know how they're doing it they've figured out how to do
it it just slots back in like this
hang on i did it just now hang on oh it's there
it just slots back in but they managed to like pull it up
which is quite remarkable really for a squirrel
anyway sorry einstein anyway i'm going to be planting out some bare root fruit
bushes today which is very exciting um but the first thing i'm going to do
is i'm going to go and get some more wood chip from the
original wood chip pile hopefully i can gather some together
um but that's the first thing i'm going to do before everyone arrives
and sees me like scavenging the ends stick on my
cool job gloves oh no that's not it it's a dirty one
oh look at this nice clean new ones they fit
why i do this by hand i don't bring like a shovel down it's
because it's such a long walk if i had to balance a shovel as well and i have
tried to do it before it just takes too much time it's just
too much effort i find it so much easier just to do it by hand and then i've only
got to take the wheelbarrow back and this gets quite heavy wood chip is
heavy remember i used to be a tree so i'm taking a bit of a tree back
am i going to grab one more now i always do it to myself don't i
right one more
do not let me go and get more wood chip because i am knackered
i did find a secret little spot of it though so there's quite a bit there
um for me to grab do you remember i was so close to saying that i'm gonna have
to buy wood chip and then i've just found a load of free
stuff so patience you know patience
all right there we go there's a bit of wood chip down it's never as much as you
think it is is it it was two filled wheelbarrows and it's barely
covered the back it probably needs another
another one on the back and then probably another two down here
but we will get there and it feels good to be getting this bit done
it gets overgrown every year i did promise my neighbors that i would get on
top of it this year so i'm really glad that i am doing that it
feels good feel productive right in this bed at the back here i know i
said ages ago potatoes were going to go in
i've changed my mind i'm going to put some bare root fruit bushes in
and it's a great time of year to do that in the winter time
it's not growing so you can transplant them into places and they can get away
in the summer it's also a good time of year to move
fruit bushes as well so if you've got any fruit bushes that you want to move
now's the time to do it when it's not actively growing uh this is the bed
they're all going to go in so i think we'll give it a rake over and
clean it up a little bit and then we'll get um planting i tell
you what though there's a lot of rocks on here i don't know where they've come
from but these would be really good around my
pond where had these come from why is there like a little thing of them
it's a bit weird isn't it nice then where'd they come from
so
so here are all the sticks they look a bit scary don't they when they come like
this as bare root plants because you just think how on earth is that going to
grow into anything but they do they really do so what have
i ordered i've got we've got raspberries these ones here
which look like little bags of weeds are actually rhubarb so that's a rhubarb
raspberry one that's a rhubarb early and that is a
rhubarb victoria they literally just like look like
roots like little weeds sent in bags but um they will grow
they will grow into rhubarb very exciting
these are the two i'm most excited about some reason because i've just never had
them before and never grown them and it's red currant and
um black currant so these two are going to go in this bed first i think and then
i'm going to put those near the back um the other ones i
actually think might need support so the raspberries
will definitely need some kind of support this here
is a gooseberry i'm excited to try gooseberries as well
um again i think that might need some kind of support so i have to build that
in a later date um because i'm not prepared today
i'm not mentally prepared this is a loganberry i have a feeling that probably
might need support as well let me have a look actually online yes
they do need support they grow a bit like raspberries so that's
going to need support as well so maybe what i'll do is i'll put the ones that
don't need support so the red currant and black currant at the front
and then i'll build the support for the back and put them in the back um
i don't know if i can do that today because i wasn't mentally prepared for
this maybe i will let's get the two in at the
front and then let's have a look and see how
what i feel like doing i'm not gonna lie it's december guys
i want some time off you can plant out these out right until like january
february because it's still winter and i think they'll be fine but i'd
rather get them in the ground earlier rather than later
right okay we'll see let's just whack these ones in so the general rule of
thumb when you're planting bare root fruit bushes
is to bury it twice as deep as the roots
and three times as wide and i guess that's just to help it get going a bit
and make sure that it's really in the ground and that it's got room to wiggle
about and spread its roots out but twice as deep three times as wide that's
all you really need to know about them just whack them in
right this is the black currant going in here you go so that's twice as deep
three times as wide that's not really twice as deep
but i think it's right anyway around that all goes
weeds we've got to really push it down so it's really stuck in there
now mate have a drink have a drink have a drink
relax enjoy your new home we are going to see if we can build a
super quick structure the thing is is i've got so many
big logs and stuff and big tree trunks it would be rude not to you know i've
got to use them for something and this seems like the ideal thing
i'm not sure what to put across but then i won't need to worry about that just
yet will i because they're not going to grow till
the spring right let's see if i can find two
not the biggest space some maybe sort of slightly
thinner ones i think right i didn't know i'd be structure making today so i'm not
quite mentally prepared for this i want two of a similar
can i just say while i'm over here how much better does this plot
now look with the wood chip like especially this bit here where it's like
joining both the plots together gosh it's just looking amazing but this
this is for another day today we're working on this one
so
oh my god right we're not going to make things harder than they need to be it's
just going to be a structure of two sticks
it's going to be a tail of two two sticks and some wire in between
so
it's so weird isn't it it's like a bit of flagpole
maybe if i put the other one in it'll look all right it's actually small though
like two not wide enough apart bloody hell i don't know
i wasn't mentally prepared for structure building today that's all it is guys
normally i'm much better at this right it doesn't look as weird now like
on a scale of one to ten i'd say that's probably a four now of
weirdness which is pretty good right it just looks like
i've started to make a structure it's very tall isn't it
oh well better tall than short don't know why it just is
i think i need one more structure in front of it oh god i'll do it to myself
right let's find two more sticks let's do it again
let's just do it again every time i come down here with just a couple of jobs
in my mind it ends up being a couple of hundred jobs
just happens every time and i really don't have time for this today as well
got so much to do but here i am looking for sticks to make structure
for raspberries right these two sticks are not quite as long
so whatever grows here is just going to have to not grow very tall
i'm just going to have to tell it you know right okay
same process really in fact exactly the same process
chaos
that
i think i buried the scissors i think the scissors are under one of these
pathways i just made i was just cutting it with the scissors wasn't i
where are my scissors gone i was literally just using them oh god have i
buried them have i buried them i think they might be
under here somewhere i think i've buried my
flipping scissors what a twassic why would i oh there they are
i thought because i'm getting tired because i'm getting tired right
so i just looked up about the gooseberry a gooseberry is a bush
so i think that can go into my new allotment plot somewhere and have like a
separate bed for that so that's great the loganberry and raspberries need
support so they're going to go on here they've
given me quite a lot i've got like five canes of each so i
think i'm just going to put two canes of raspberry and one
one loganberry in which is like a raspberry apparently
so i'm quite excited to see that i've never really heard of a loganberry
before but now i've got one so lucky lucky me
right the raspberries that are going into the glen
ample that's what i've gone for i know nothing about them
but that it just makes it more exciting to me when i don't know about it i don't
know what it is i don't know what it tastes like i don't
know when it will be harvested that's part of the fun of gardening
though racking stuff in and not knowing what it might become
there we are all right there we go two raspberries going in
what's the use of this i'm a banana if i try and dig with the banana
let's dig with our hands i will see you with raspberries on
if not it was nice knowing you goodbye
right okay my camera battery is flashing at me which usually means i've been here
too long whenever i've run out of battery on my
camera i know that i've just like been here for hours i think it's like
12 o'clock now and i had so much to do today but
instead what we did was we built a fruit bush
structure for raspberries and a loganberry which i'm very very proud of
so i'm going to show you the finished result now of what all that kerfuffle
was about behold my new fruit bush area so at the
front here we have got our red current and black current very
exciting they're more like bushy so i'll see how big they grow that'd be
interesting then as you can see what i've done is
i've made little pathways between these um which is going to be where the
loganberry is and the raspberries and i will add
wire across as they grow and i think that will work really well
and then i've got a nice little area here for fruit and for picking
and that's what we did today in the mud um it was actually really good fun i'm
glad i did it all of those um bare root fruit bushes
are from a company called roots and i'm working with them over on
instagram so i just have to disclose that they gave them to me for free
to advertise on instagram um so i'm very fortunate that they
did that and i feel very grateful and they're really great quality stuff but
i wasn't strictly asked to advertise on here i just planted them out
um so i'm going to put a little ad in the box just because just to cover my
back basically because they were gifted for free
um but if you want to see more information about them head over to my
instagram it's at emma's allotment diaries
um and you will see a reel all about them on there and it will give you lots
more information about the company as well so
i hope you enjoyed the vlog today if you did do subscribe to my channel as always
i'll see you next time thank you so much for watching guys
bye
