Hey, Will It Bow?
Will It Bow is a series where we build bows out of unsuspecting items.
In other words, basically from trash.
Or a pallet and a necktie.
Maybe an old whiskey barrel.
How about using super glue?
Hockey sticks, shovel handles, anything you can dream up, I will try to make.
This is the beginning of reviving the Will It Bow series.
And today we're diving into a highly requested item.
Snow skis.
So it begs the question,
Will It Bow?
Hey, come, come, come along.
Breathe in and breathe out.
Look at the colors, colors, colors...
Right.
Pomace pads, make this one count.
Undyne, you're so good.
of dragging yourself down
Why?
Well, there ain't much time left
to figure things out
Deep underneath all the layers of your doubts
There's a heart gone out of rhythm
In despair
Held underwater
Falling for air
Breathe in
Breathe out
Hey, come, come, come alive
Breathe in
Breathe out
Look at the colors, colors, colors
around
I don't like to be wasteful at all
so I was trying to find broken skis
I couldn't find any broken skis at multiple shops
but they recommend that I check out Goodwill
and at Goodwill I found a pair of snow skis for $15
and I figured that would work
You got the white knuckles
holding on tight
Keeping your fears bottled up inside
Heading for a collision in denial
To really live, you gotta die
around
Look at the colors, colors, colors
around
Look at the colors, colors, colors

Snow skis are an absolute nightmare material to work with
In a snow ski, there's plastic, rubber, metal, wood, and fiberglass
This will destroy tools
I'm going to attempt to only use
blades and sandpaper that I can trash after this project
It's fascinating because snow skis have a natural taper to them
and this is how you would build a bow
So the shape of the snow ski is going to be perfect
The question is, will it hold up?
and how strong is it?
The wood on the inside appears to be pine
which concerns me because that's not good bow wood
There are screw holes that I'm going to try to avoid as much as I can
but this could be another potential problem
I'm not just making a long bow
I'm going to try to make a recurve bow
Not only that, a takedown recurve bow
The only thing I'm going to add to this bow
is hardware and a bowstring
The handle and the limbs are 100% a pair of snow skis
I created a pretty steep angle coming off the riser
and this is where I messed up
The angle at which the limbs come off the riser
is dependent upon the limbs material
and the type of bow performance you want
I don't know how strong these skis are as bow limbs
This is a guess because if the limbs are flat to the bow when it's not drawn
they may not hold up
and because this is unfamiliar material
I wanted to give it a little bit of forward set
so that I could make sure this would be a good shooting bow
I think I gave it too much
so let's correct it
Out of hundreds and hundreds of bows I've made
this was the absolute worst handle I've ever had to shape
The rubber and plastic would just gum up any type of sandpaper I tried to use
Fiberglass is tough to sand through
and then you've got the metal inside this handle
throwing sparks everywhere in a wood shop
Not a good idea
I used 5 or 6 or 7 different tools
trying anything I could
and just took my time
I destroyed my arms with fiberglass
It's 6 showers later and I'm still trying to get the itchiness out
But in the end it made a beautiful, fantastic handle
But just wait until you see the results
I think you won't be disappointed
The wood stops about 6 inches from the limb tip
and we primarily have metal in the limb
This is to keep the tip of the ski up when someone's skiing
so it doesn't dig deep into the snow
So this part's really rigid
making it a rigid recurve bow
which actually adds speed to the bow
So that's almost a perfect design for a recurve bow
that's naturally coming from the ski
This might be a little wild to say
but if I gave this bow to somebody
and had them shoot with their eyes closed
they would have no clue it's a ski
and I bet you they would think
it's a very smooth shooting bow
It's wild, but it's like the perfect material
The only thing I would change
is change out the core material
The pine on the inside is not great
If I could swap that pine for bamboo
whatever they used on the back and the belly
The belly is more of a plastic
The back is, I believe, fiberglass
It works out really good
If you could change out that inner core
it would be a little bit more snappy
But even with the weak core, we had a great result
The snowski bow undoubtedly rivals
the whiskey barrel bow
for the best willow bow ever
Super smooth, super fun to shoot
and super glad you stopped by to hang out with me today
Thank you so much
Stay shatterproof, and I'll see you on the next video
Well, that was a lot of fun
I'm gonna need a bigger wall
