A winter storm sparks coastal chaos in California. A 'Rogue Wave' hospitalizes eight, and high surf warnings persist.
Winter weather in California has led to coastal disasters, including a rogue wave incident
reported by the Ventura County Fire Department.
Eight people were hospitalized due to the wave during a high surf advisory at high tide.
Footage shows a tall wave and two larger waves crashing onto a Ventura beach, flooding an
elevated area and surrounding roads.
The fire department urged caution with ongoing high surf advisories, citing multiple rescues,
injuries and widespread flooding.
Over in Northern California, Mavericks Beach, 25 miles south of San Francisco, also saw
massive waves, attracting surfers and spectators to the break.
This perspective is kind of weird because you can't really see how big the waves are
from the cliffs over here, but we saw a jet ski that like kind of flipped over, over there
and that was wild and some of those sets were huge.
Being born in Berkeley, California, it's always been a bucket list item of mine to
really go and see Mavericks first hand and just see the like beauty that the wave has
to offer.
It's always been a dream.
Surfline forecasted waves as high as 30 to 40 feet, with high surf warnings in effect
for shoreline counties along with San Francisco Bay Area.
According to the National Weather Service, the area could see, quote, dangerously large
breaking waves of 28 to 33 feet with up to 40 feet possible at favored locations.
