afternoon with cookies and hot black tea.
people like to spend afternoons with friends and drink tea
afternoon tea just like the toilet paper adsorbs water and is part of our life.
but why the afternoon and not in the morning?
this is because in the 18th century the Duchess of Bedford
thought that the time beteen lunch and dinner was to long
there was nothing to do so they decided to drink tea and eat biscuits
the other British royals decided to do the same as the duchess (like like)
with the prosperity of society, the people followed up
afternoon tea became English culture
BUT
something was still suspicious
black tea, black tea, why still black tea!!!
why does afternoon tea only use black tea not green tea
Tea is clearly from China
Why British drink Assam black tea and Darjeeling tea
How did the trend of drinking tea in the West begin
something is weird
let the detective agency uncover this secret story behind afternoon tea
speaking of afternoon tea, we have to mention about Great Sailing Era
Chinese tea enters Europe with merchant ships
the United Kingdom became strongly obsessed with tea
Rumor has it that this trend was led by Princess Catherine of Portugal
In 1662, Princess Catherine married Charles II of England.
Because she loved tea so much she brought tea to England with her.
At that time English nobles only drank ale and wine.
They were so shocked when they see the tea that Princess Catherine was drinking.
WOW! What is this amazing beverage! It's so cool that it doesn't contain alcohol!
Nobles thought tea was good so they started to drink tea like Catherine did.

It was a time when people believed "the East (Asia) is trendy."
Tea became really popular among the upper-class.
At the time, East India Company was the monopoly for all trades with Asia.
The Company kept increasing the purchases for tea,
and 90% of the purchases from China was tea leaves.
The Company brought porcelain just because they had extra space, but it was definitely not the Company's target.
The money England spent on buying tea accounted for 10% for the country's total income.
Dang that's a lot!
At the same time it was very troublesome for English because of the high need for tea.
China is the only country that sold tea, but the government of Qing Dynasty hated overseas trades.
And Qing Dynasty didn't want any English product either.
It was only England paying China, but China didn't have any money going to England.
The situation made England use their "secret weapon."
It's me! England! I want to buy some tea, do you want to buy some OPIUM?
Opium ended up being so popular in China that everyone became addicted to it.
Qing Dynasty got upset over what England did to the country,
and the government had Commissioner Lin destroy all the opium.
What Qing Dynasty did made England upset too, and it led to the well-known Opium War.
It seems like the War that opened up the door to China was caused by opium,
but in fact it all started because of tea!
England finally could do business with China after the war
BUT only ONE company could do the business
which was East India Company
it made everyone unhappy and free competition became imperative
this situation made the East India Company who controlled the all India business changed their mind
if we could not monopoly the business then we plant our own tea
Self-production and sales are more cost-effective
so their started to plant tea trees in Assam, India
um...Let us taste the results
uh...
terrible...
without planting techniques and the good variety of tea, it was impossible to plant the good tea
As the saying goes "How can you catch tiger cubs without entering the tiger's lair" "How can you get good tea without entering the WuYi mountain"
Plant hunter FuJun
FuJun FuJun
marched to China to steal the tea plant
bring the best tea plant and tea maker to India
Although he has experience in collecting plants on the coast of China
going deep into the mountains to get the tea
it’s extremely difficult
especially after the Opium war, the Chinese disliked the Europeans
it made every step of FuJun's mission very difficult
FuJun FuJun
In order to avoid being discovered
he dressed like the local Qing Dynasty people
hired some employees
and embarked on the trip to find the best tea
after overcoming tremendous difficulties, FuJun finally found the best tea on WuYi mountain
but there was a problem to be solved
due to the different climate, humidity and temperature, it is hard for the tea plant to survive
but FuJun used the Wardian case (portable greenhouse) to keep them alive
finally he brought the tea plants to India successfully
beside from accomplishing his mission, FuJun found out some new things in China
for example, the Europeans thought green tea and black tea were different plants
FuJun discovered that green tea and black tea were from the same plants after he understood the tea making process
they only differed on the degrees of fermentation
the reason why British only drink black tea was related to FuJun
When he was doing inspection in ZheJiang
he noticed the local green tea has a darker shade compared to those shipped to Europe
he was puzzled
then he found out that the green tea exported from GuangZhou was treated with Gypsum powder and blue dye
to make it bright and colorful
But blue paints was used?! Oh my goodness!
The Europeans stopped drinking green tea when they found out
SInce then the Europeans only drink black tea
Let's look at the tea making process in India
With good tea plants and tea making techniques, India's tea production increased every year
At the end of the 19th century, the presence of India tea in England increased from 4% to 59%
Whereas the sales of Chinese tea dropped significantly
It was not known how the Chinese tea making techniques were leaked
England then spread the techniques to other regions
such as Kenya and Ceylon, which contributed to the increase of tea production plants
and marked the ubiquitous presence of black tea production around the world
After the investigation of the birth of afternoon tea
the Opium war and spread of tea due to FuJun's stealing
Now do you have a better understanding of the origin of afternoon tea?
This history indirectly shaped the habit of tea drinking of 70% of the population
Tea is the second most important drink to water
And unique tea cultures have been developed around the world
and continue to influence each other. The time is late
let's close the case of afternoon tea
and enjoy the tea party!!
